Turn Dolby Vision OFF!
That’s it! Thank you!

So Dolby Vision has to be manually toggled on/off? I thought it would detect whether the disk supported .

The manual Dolby Digital switching has been the biggest gripe about this player since DV was added to its firmware

Am I correct that DV is only going to be used with 4K BluRay and some streaming content? And sounds like it must be enabled manually when using those sources and disabled for any other sources?

Wow...guess I should have researched a little more before purchase. There’s apparently a reason why it was so low priced. ☹️

Curious, currently If there was a full auto mode within the player for HDR and Dolby Vision.

how would the player or disc know automagically what you wanted to experience for a particular disc title?.

HDR or Dolby Vision?.

If the disc menus in the future were to utilize a video settings menu. Similar to the audio settings menu contained with most disc menus. Where you can select an audio option like DTS or Dolby. Then I could understand how a full auto video setting on a player could possibly function.

Or even a popup question once the movie loads similar to “would you like to continue movie from where you left off.” “Yes or No”.

Select one HDR or Dolby Vision

Interesting points and questions about DV being manual.

I recall setting something to auto in the settings and forgetting it. I've watched 2 movies since and, honestly, both looked incredible and I didn't even think of DV. That could be because the disc packaging didn't refer to DV, too.

Transformers The Last Knight and Midway. I think both were HDR.

@LNEWoLF , players that auto-switch select DV if supported/available, then fall back to HDR-10 otherwise.

I understand if that is indeed how the players that have an auto setting function.

The current Sony 4K UHD players that support both HDR and Dolby Vision currently will also auto select Dolby Vision if contained within a disc title. That has both HDR and Dolby Vision.

With HDR set to AUTO

Dolby Vision set to ON

Curious can anyone list some VERIFIED 4K UHD disc titles that contain only HDR without Dolby Vision?.

My question is still the same. If disc titles in their current form that contain both Dolby Vision and HDR. How would the auto feature know what someone prefers for a particular title?.

Some people prefer vanilla ice cream vs chocolate ice cream. Others may sometimes prefer chocolate vs vanilla at that particular moment. Some after sampling both may prefer chocolate. Even though they preferred vanilla previously.

@LNEWoLF , all UHD disks that have DV are required to have an HDR-10 base layer, and on my Oppo 203 with HDR set to Auto, I get DV for said disks, unless the player is connected to my display that doesn't support DV (but does support HDR-10), in which case the HDR-10 layer is obviously selected automatically.

Edit: at least on the 203, there is a way to "force" HDR-10 on a DV disk (and your chain supports DV), should you choose to do so.

I understand, the Sony players function similar to this way as well with a supported display.

With HDR set to AUTO and Dolby Vision set to OFF. The player will output HDR.

Yes, all DV discs have HDR10 as well. So if you prefer HDR10, you just leave DV off. If you always want DV, even if the disc doesn't natively support that, you turn it on. If you want DV only when the disc supports it, you use auto (which the x700 doesn't support)

There's no such thing as a disc that has DV but not HDR10, because DV itself is built as an extension of the HDR10 data on UHD Blu-ray. It requires that HDR10 data to be there.

I'll post also here for a possible solution. My intro to 3D was short lived..What a killjoy...that didn't take long...ugh. Sooooo now I have to take off my sit back and enjoy the movie hat and replace it with the trouble shooting one. I am going to say it would be one of five things?...the disc, the sony x700, my yamaha receiver, hdmi cable or the Epson.

Any thoughts on where to start?

3D is turned on in the player right? If so I'm not sure. Is there a setting in the projector you need to change to enable 3D?

Maybe try wiring directly to the projector and see if that fixes it just to eliminate the receiver as an issue.

I looked around the menus in the x700 and I didn't see any 3D modes to turn on...from the error it appears that the player thinks there is an incompatibility somewhere....the troubleshooting begins!

Ok...troubleshooting is open for business! I bypassed the receiver and went direct to the projector and even switched the active hdmi cable to a copper hdmi cable to the x700 and still get the error. Switched from 3D auto to 3D still nothing.. I checked the region code of the disc it is good...plays the blu-ray disc fine.

Is that [3D Display] option on your projector? If so, did you turn off both devices, unplug HDMI and replug after changing that setting? Devices may need to redo their HDMI handshake.

Hi,

I have an issue playing DSF files on this device. I have put a few on a USB stick but they are not displayed in the browser. They are standard DSD64 5.6 MHz files. The manual suggests that these should be supported on USB but unfortunately not via DLNA.

The reason I wanted to use this player is that my receiver doesn't support multi-channel DSF files so I was hoping that this device could play them. But even 2-channel files are not displayed.

Does anyone know how to solve this?

Thanks in advance

/M

morphinapg...thanks for your assistance. I had to go into beast mode and step by step everything I did and I found the issue. It appears that after I did a FIRMWARE update to this player DOLBY VISION was added and switched on thus disabling the 3D capabilities. Switched it off and now 3D is working. Ahhhhh...I do this crap 40hrs a week and the last thing I want to do on my weekends is 41hrs!

As for the 3D...(from my 5min viewing of it) I thought is looked very cool. I will (again) look at the 3D sub features and fine tune it. I did see a setting called 3D depth. One click to the left I thought it made my eyes kinda relax a tad but I have no idea what the hell it does so here goes more space in my limited 10gig brain for 3D!

I had a VERY strange issue when watching Doctor Strange 4k the other day. I noticed that during the dark scenes it seemed as though there was massive compression. The same kind of compression you would see when streaming. Lots of artifacts, very blocky, especially on the background scenes. This is the only movie I have seen this with on this player, everything else looks fantastic. Also, I know it's not the movie because I happen to also have another 4k bluray player (Panasonic DP-UB420) and I tested this movie with that player - it's perfectly crystal clear as you would expect. Btw, I have tried every setting combination I can think of (HDR on/off, Deep Color on/off, etc...). Has anyone seen this?

Under properly controlled conditions [which means among other things double blind and careful level matched using external measurement gear and attenuators] I find it unlikely there would be any audible difference in either music or movie content.

Agreed. As I understand it, the raw data from the disc is passed to the AVR to process. I have the player set to do no processing whatsoever, leave it to the TV and AVR.
m. zillch and galonzo like this.

LG OLED B7 TV
Denon X3500H AVR
Dali 5.1.2 Speakers
Sony X700 UHD Blu-ray player

Good point. Since this Sony only has digital outs all conversion from a digital stream into analog sound must occur downstream in some other device.

so some players can't play more audio formats than others? (ie: dts, dts-x, 7.1, atmos, etc). it all depends on the movie itself and AVR?
