Is it possible that Dolby Vision allows a mode with the rec709 gamma EOTF? I know in HEVC, you can set transfer function, color space, and primaries. It's certainly possible that all three of these are flags you can apply to a dolby vision stream as well. If so, I'm guessing what we'd be seeing is something not too far off from HDR with max nits of 100, although with tonemapping maybe it raises it to something like 200, with a slightly steeper gamma look to it.
I have the Vertex, I can research what metadata does it output over HDMI in that mode.
Even so, i am unable to investigate the pixel values, though.
You are right that some tonemapping must happen there, as without it the max white (235) would produce only around 5nits of luminance on PQ screen.
I just need some time to arrive there.

You can test Dolby Vision metadata? I've only heard of people being able to check what HDR10 metadata is.

Anyway, a straight translation would have the 8bit values multiplied by 4. But my guess was that they didn't need to do that, or do any fancy mathematical calculation, because the HEVC stream can allow for rec709 transfer function, color space, and primaries flags.

MKV Dolby TrueHD

Hey guys. I had this player before and sold it about a year ago. I am looking to get a 2nd 4k player and the Panasonic I have is horrid for playing files from a hard drive...(lame for a player that costs as much as I spent on this one...)

Did Sony ever push a firmware update that allowed MKV files encoded with Dolby TrueHD to be played?

Well, Vertex (and many other HDFury devices) can only show me AVI frame with DV metadata. I have not yet found a description to decode them and I do not have Vertex2 whose GUI would allow to do this automatically.
But - now that I have tested it again, I have made some new and interesting observations.
Fist off - I have the X1100ES and upgraded to latest firmware R.0052 (too bad the original models seem to be left out of this release).
And there are good news - even with Dolby Vision ON, the only instance where I can see it being activated on output is with SDR files from USB. Not from Optical, not from DLNA. The screenshots illustrate.

This has been the most buggy player I have ever owned in my entire life. Everytime I try to turn on Dolby Vision mode, the player just locks up and the only way I can get it playing again is to do a factory reset. Seems to work fine as long as I leave DV off.

I don't get it... my system is fully DV compatible. Plays streaming DV just fine from my Nvidia Shield.

I've never had that issue. You may have a defective unit.

Apparently not for this player, but the M2 models (X800M2 and X1100ES) now play TrueHD track from MKV file, but it is recognised as MLP audio, decoded internally and output as LPCM 7.1, on second attempt.

Help a brother out...

Is there any way to get the UBP-700X to display how much time is left on a movie when paused? (Referring to discs, not streaming.) I have searched and searched and cannot find a setting that turns this on.

Thanks in advance,

Lyle

Hi

I’ve just recently purchased an x700 and have 2 issues which are puzzling me. I’m hoping one of you can clarify for me as I’m clearly missing something.

Tcl series 6 - hdr and Dolby vision comp
tx sr393 - hdr and Dolby vision comp

Problem 1: Watching a UHD movie(Fallout) with Dolby vision disabled on the x700 when I view the display settings I see 4k/60 and then Hdr -> Sdr which I suspect means it’s not displaying Hdr10. So I’m good with the resolution(4k) but thought it should also be in hdr as well with this setup.

Problem 2: Watching same movie and I enable Dolby vision on the x700. Starting the movie my tv indicates it’s in dv mode but when the movie starts up my resolution has changed to 1080p when pressing display though it now shows Dolby vision. Shouldn’t the movie still be displaying 2160 AND Dolby vision at this point? Why the change in resolution? I tried this with 2 movies and had the same result though both movies support dv.

Thanks for your help

Not sure if this is exactly what your asking.

On your Sony remote press display. It will then display details about the video and audio signals, current chapter, current amount of time of the movie played, total length of time of the movie.

I seem to recall some disc that will display time left in a movie when paused.

I watch so many movies anymore. Not sure I could even name the ones I have seen recently

That did it! Thank you! My wife was ready to divorce me over not knowing how much time was left on a disc! Okay. Maybe that was a slight exaggeration. But she was ready to toss the player and buy something else. You saved me a couple hundred bucks. First beers on me if you are ever in the neighborhood!

For SDR movies on Blu-ray, it does something but it's not clear what. It's not like the fake HDR modes on a TV where everything is exaggerated like crazy, but it's also not like regular SDR either. For me it feels like they crank the gamma and luminance slightly, and it gives me somewhat of a resemblance to how Disney has graded HDR in many of their older movies on Disney+, with a really low effort, still mostly looking like the SDR source. So unless you're a stickler for 100% accuracy, it's not really a bad thing to leave it on for standard Blu-rays either.

For DVD it does nothing.

It does however prevent playing 3D movies if it's on, for some unknown reason.

It's default ain't it? I was watching LOTR - Two Towers and when I paused it, at the right end of the progress bar was the time remaining.

To get the remaining time, some math is required. On the display you see current and total times, so remaining time is the difference of the two. I am not aware of any ways to change the timeline display of the player.
Java-based bluray timelines are different and vary with the content.

I don't see that IMAX enhanced discs (media) are technically any different from the rest of UHD discs. So why wouldn't it?

The X700 sounds a tad lightweight in comparison, though it never suffers any wince-inducing brightness despite the leaner tone.

I’m getting sick and tired of this player! The constant freezing up is beyond annoying and the lack of auto DV detection is ridiculous! Only problem is the Panasonic is 3x the price and I don’t know if it’s worth it. I wish I had bought an Oppo while they were still in business.
