Terry would have thought in your system, with those very premium JM Labs Utopia's, you'd have plenty of justification to spend the extra on the 9000 with it's ability to be a top class audio player in your system with its balanced outputs alongside its seemingly equal video abilities to the 820. The build quality is really impressive I might add too. For all of the $US1100 mine cost here, I didn't lose sleep over getting one, evening having had the UB900 and Oppo 203 previously. I'm looking forward to getting my CD and small assortment of hi-res discs out at some stage and enjoying a listen on my Revels.

I read you and if I really-honestly thought I would actually hear any difference I might move the now UB820 to the Master Bedroom.
Then get the UB9000 Panasonic for the dedicated HT when it comes available here in the USA.

Refinement and silence of the loading and disc spinning mechanism is important but still not enough to pay off for the price difference.
Totally agreed. After purchasing the UB820 for $499 at Best Buy, I couldn't be happier. 24 hours after placing the 820 in my equipment shelf, I'm satisfied. I was initially obsessing about the 9000 due to its build quality, etc. However, in the real world, you'll NEVER tell a visual or audio difference between the two. I really mean NEVER. I don't use the analog audio outs; for those that do, that would be the only real reason to buy the 9000. By the time the 820 is outdated, we won't be using physical discs any longer at which point the 9000 would really seem like a paperweight sitting in a basement storage room and worth $50.

Video and audio quality via HDMI is identical between the 820 and the 9000... the 820 is a cheaply build version of the 9000, and the 420 is a cheaply build 820 with no DV...

No differences expected excluding some (very marginal) functions non implemented in the 820 and build quality...

The 9000 is all about build quality not performances... those are superb on all the current Panasonic Lineup... even on the low cost European 420...

The 820 feels janky when you have other higher end equipment. I couldn’t wait to sell mine. Bring on the 9000.

I totally understand the desire to have gear that has better build quality. I prefer the look of the Oppo 205 over the 203 but both have excellent build quality. I bought the 205 for the additional features specifically the analog stage for two channel playback.

But from what I've read in this thread is that some are considering buying the Panasonic 9000 for the build quality alone. Some have mentioned that they do not use analog and will be only using HDMI. As much as build quality is great to have but spending $500 more for the 9000 over the 820 seems strange to me. It'd be even stranger for me if someone bought the 205 over the 203 on appearance or build quality alone. The cost differences between the 205 and 203 is much more at $750.

But to each his own certainly applies here .

Terry, I wouldn't consider the UB9000 an audio performer. You would be better off with the Oppo 205 for audio. The Panny uses faux balanced outputs using Single Ended circuit for the balanced outputs. I'd use the Panny UB820 for video and get something else for high end audio.

Panasonic DM UB 9000 anticipation thread

I received an email today as well. It would have been great if these were shipping next week since I’m off and would have had plenty of time to compare against my Pioneer LX500 as I’ll need to decide which one to keep.

I know the Panasonic will be better for PQ with HDR although not dramatically based on what I saw from the 820 I had for a short time but I’m disappointed in what I’ve read about the 2 channel analog.

The Pioneer is pretty good for two channel analog audio sitting between the Oppo 203 and 205 IMO but right now I’m only using it for video so if the Panasonic is better for two channel analog audio my decision would be easy. I’m not sure though if better PQ for HDR would be enough to keep the Panasonic over the Pioneer which is amazingly quiet and doesn’t even get remotely warm.

In an ideal world world, but the the 205 is end of life now. It might outdo the UB9000 in audio stage perhaps (mind you who's done an actual shootout to base this one yet??). The 205 is going still be a let down with its tone-mapping issues compared to the 9000. So if it was judged say better in audio, would it be worth missing out on the quality of tonemapping available and firmware support just get what may or may not be a better/purer audio result?

Its a pretty solid player,

in my case it has pushed a oppo 205 out of the rack,

I run a full focal 7.1.5 setup including focal Utopia mains...

IT has meant my oppo 205 can be relocated to the 2ch side of my system

I still have the oppo hooked up via hdmi to the av side. so when get the time over the chris-ny break I'll get around to doing some comparisons

Oppo is on record stating support for the foreseeable future and will soon release a HDR10+ update.

FYI - i received an email wanting payment for a DEC31 UB9000. I'm not going to purchase it .. so i guess the next guy in line will get an email.

There is no warranty information that I could find on the 9000 product page on the VE site. You could call or email VE to get a definitive answer.

I plan to use the 9000 strictly as transport as the audio will get routed via coaxial to my PS Audio DS DAC. No surround here just higher end 2 channel and LG E8. So just looking for the best video quality and higher end build.

That's how I plan it as well. I'm using an Emo erc-3 as a transport to my Kef wireless for now, but prefer to have one player handle both video/audio duties. Too bad the panny doesn't support sacds; my emo does but only reads the red book layer so a bit disappointed by that...nevertheless it's still an amazing cd player.

An extended 4 yr (total) MAC warranty is offered for approx $95. I wonder if it’s worth it.
