Heard that kind of thing from manufacturers before. I'd be more concerned that they still haven't fixed the tone mapping issue and owners are starting to lose hope. That alone is the kind of thing that doesn't exactly inspire confidence among owners and why I was more than happy to pass on my 203 to a buddy of mine.

Oppo has stated recently that there's never going to be a correction for the tone mapping issue, so you can put a fork in that.

There you go, say no more.. There were people posting about the lack of it as little as a week and half a go in the owner's thread.

to be fair to them, they always said from day one of the feature announcement that they would have a go, but no promises.

also most displays come with the tone mapping in anycase. even ivc are coming with it pre loaded. and thats where it belongs. I believe its each display makers responsibility to provide appropriate tone mapping to suit their own display tech and capabilities.

thats not to say its not useful for people with legacy displays or not people out there making good use of the Panasonic capability. I say this as a 9000 owner and also owing an oppo 205 with tone mapping that I myself said quite early on was not good enough... and in the NQR not quite right category...

This review should keep you guys warm until the 9000 arrives. He did have a bit of complaint about CD playback quality.

So does the UB820 have Dolby Vision? I think the 9000 supports all 4 formats.

So it's using an AK4493 dac which appears a later version than what's in the A&K KANN or even a Marantz flagship AV receiver...not that it matters to some.

I've been disappointed with their US release dates and delays that i'd rather just wait for CES announcements then decide.

It is a two year unit, and I would think the Pioneers are too. Not sure what CES will offer other than budget Sony's and Panny's. I tend to ignore LG and Samsung players for obvious reasons.

Same e-mail. Will see if he bills us tomorrow, although Robert never said the 28th in his e-mail. That date came from another forum member.

I'll wait it out. We know they are in port and that we are on the December allocation. Better odds than I had trying to get a hold of an Oppo 205.

I see the Panasonic 9000 and the Oppo 205 as very different players. The 9000 seems more geared towards picture quality where the 205 is more about sound quality and the ability to play just about any disc format.

True, but I have no interest in SCAD or DVD Audio.. I currently have two Oppo 203's and run 7.1 audio through a high end analog processor. The 203 was a nice upgrade and the analog in the 9000 should be at least as good or better. The 203 was also a nice upgrade in picture, so I still see the 9000 as a plus plus when you consider the build quality of the unit. Panasonic is also still in the business of making players and I had some reservations about dumping over $3K buying three players from a company out of that side of the business. .

Updated schedule from VE:

"From what I was told they arrived at the port on 12/20, but were delayed in customs and are now scheduled to arrive in Panasonic's CA warehouse today. With the holiday schedule they will not ship to me until Tuesday, Jan. 2nd and will likely arrive in my store on or about Jan. 9th."

Rats!

Dockworkers and shipping companies become lazy asses around the holidays! Two freaking days of holiday and it somehow becomes two weeks of delay.

I feel for those that preordered this early and paid for it with expectations of a late December delivery. Not Robert's fault it's Panasonic's fault. Not much of a stretch between 1st and 2nd allocation at this point. Still it will all be worth it when it's arrives and all hooked up.

Can any 9000 owners confirm the 7.1 analog volume level? i.e. is it fixed or adjustable?

The 820 thread owners say that the volume level on the analog outputs isn't adjustable. I am presently driving my powered speakers from my Oppo 103, and the 7.1 analog volume level on the 103 is adjustable using volume button on the remote. I don't have a receiver...

But the 820 and 9000 remotes have "Volume" up in a little "TV" graphic for adjusting the volume of something downstream from the Panasonic.

If both the 820 *and* the 9000 have fixed analog audio output levels, then I'm stuck (and perplexed).

Thanks,

Scott

That’s IF there are no delays with the second allocation like there were with the first as there were delays with the first before they even shipped over.

The Buy link was up for a short time on the site but paying at that time wasn’t required to get in the first allocation so those that did pay early did so by choice. I’ve been on the wait list since July/August when the thought was that they would be available by end of September so another week isn’t that big of a deal although would have been nice to test out over holiday vacation.

True, there could be delays with the second allocation as well. I know buyers paid early by choice but I am sure some people were expecting to get them before Christmas. If you were on the wait list that's different than paying early and having your expectations raised but I guess expectations can be raised no matter what.

Well, with just recently seeing Oppo has no plans of fixing their tone mapping issues I guess it's time for me to cash out my 203 and grab one of these just as soon as I can locate one. Looks like lots of you are anticipating finding one.

I sold my 203 for an 820 (I have a JVC 520 PJ) and have zero regrets. Love the auto tone mapping. Ended up making a nice profit too that I put towards a complete bass shaker implementation for my theater room

Yea, also have another friend just pushing me towards the 820 now. That it would still do everything I needed in the video department.

I will be using either the 820 or 9000 to playback audio CDs. Is there any reason to believe the 9000 will have superior audio? Also what is the highest quality audio output for CDs? Coax or HDMI? The 820 only has optical out so I don't know if that will be much of an issue?

Thanks for any/all advice!

-Brian
