LG unveils 2018 UHD Blu-ray players - UBK90/80

Just came across this. Hopefully they are better than last year's models.

One with Dolby Vision, one without
The new UBK90 will replace last year’s UB970. Unlike its predecessor, UBK90 will come with Dolby Vision support from the start. It will of course also support the HDR10 base layer, which is mandatory under the UHD Blu-ray standard.

These are UHD Blu-ray players so you need a 4K TV, preferably with good HDR capabilities, to enjoy the pictures. The main difference between UBK90 and UBK80 is lack of Dolby Vision on the latter. UBK90 will have two HDMI outputs, whereas UBK80 will have only one.

One person in the comments mentioned that it will be released on 4/22. I hope the UBK90 won't be overpriced.

Zoland2020 03-26-2018 10:06 AM

Although my 4K TV only supports the HDR10 (no Dolby Vision) standard, I may still consider getting the UBK90 model later down the road if it's any good.
And I see the UBK80 is bizarrely the same as last year's UP870 model.

more importantly, did they fix the noise issue for the player, especially at the point of the layer change?

buchanaj 03-26-2018 10:17 PM

you can count on it

It looks like the pricing will be in the $300 range. B&H Photo has them on presale.

from reading the specs of the ubk90 player, why does it warrant a price that is >$100 than the 970 player?

Hopefully build quality. Its almost a pound heavier.

DistractedforLife 03-30-2018 08:57 PM

Hopefully they listened to the fans in regards to this upcoming build...

Exciting news, the 3 out right now in the mid-range DV bucket are a little disappointing it seems.

X700 (No DV until Summer)
UP970 (a lot of complaints of loud noise)
Phillips 7502 (Seems the best out of the 3, only seen minor complaints of noise, no real apps but that doesnt matter to me)

Wouldn´t be so sure, though, as I can´t imagine what are 300 grams more capable of...

Main Unit (mm): both are identical 430 x 45.5 x 205
Weight Unit (net Kg) 1.63 vs 1.92
Weight (packaged Kg) 2.59 vs 2.51

Seems like no updates yet...

The UBK90 should begin shipping out from most major US retailers by the end of this week. It's available to order at Fry's and Best Buy.

thank you. I guess that means a new thread is coming...

Mine is arriving on Saturday. I was going to wait for the x700 update but changed my mind.

AVS Commenter 05-04-2018 11:33 AM

I'm likely going to get the UBK90 now. I just don't trust Sony with DV. I've never owned an LG disc player before so I'm a little leery.

Worf 05-05-2018 12:58 AM

I spotted the ubk90 at my local best buy - no price tag or a thing, so it probably just arrived in store.

This player does its job. It’s just got a horrible UI so the user experience sucks.

Just hooked it up a few minutes ago. I've got an Oppo203 in my main room and have been using the Samsung 8500 in my family room (hooked up to a LG C7P). Definite upgrade IMO. Agree with thatJohann; the UI is super simple but I'm ok with it. It'd be 10x better if the background was black.

Just popped in TLJ and watched the Praetorian Duel. PQ is fantastic IMO; that said, definitely some bias in play. I just spent a week away on a business trip watching a hotel TV.

DistractedforLife 05-05-2018 08:54 PM

I'm glad this player is finally out in the open...

YouDontKnowMe 05-07-2018 10:35 AM

I heard on another forum on here that the UBK90 will not play DV on Sony TVs because Sony uses a low latency profile. I don't want to wait around for the Sony X700 to get the DV update but since I recently purchased the Sony 940E, I have to make sure that the player I get will work with my TV. Any idea if the UBK90 will work with my TV?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

The UBK90 does NOT support Dolby Vision on any Sony TVs. Your best bet is to wait for the Sony X700 player to get a Dolby Vision firmware update. That will almost certainly work with your TV.

Will this player be able to do HDR 10+ in the future

bongta029 05-10-2018 11:59 PM

Would buying this considered an upgrade if my up970 is quiet and dv is supported via update?

Just received my UBK90 today. It's a keeper. Put on Planet Earth II..... NO NOISE!! Yea, Silent. My UP970 gets put back in the box. This restores faith in LG for me. I have 2 LG OLED TV's and the 970 as a major disappointment. Even after I sent it back in to be repaired, it came back to me with the same drive noise problem. Happy Camper now. :)

Is ubk90 Dolby Atmos ready? Up970 had DV now, but there's no explanation if it plays dolby atmos.

Yes... As Dolby Atmos is embedded within the Dolby TrueHD bit-stream which is passed via HDMI to a suitably supporting AVR. It's not processed by the disc player.

EDIT Plus it's stated here:

The only thing a Blu-ray player really needs is bitstream support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, since Dolby Atmos is layered on Dolby TrueHD and DTS:X layered on DTS-HD Master Audio, just let your receiver or soundbar do the Atmos/DTS:X decoding for you and you're good to go!

Received my UBK90 yesterday and I'm happy to report that the annoyances I was experiencing with the UP970 have been addressed with the new model. The jet plane noise and intermittent freezing are non-existent. My projector only supports HDR10, so I cannot comment on the Dolby Vision format, but I'm very happy with the picture quality!
