Maybe POOP ? I keep hoping Oppo will return to us but they are making a mark in the cellphone market. Very sad to see them go.

Grandioso indeed at $27k. It must be something special at that price. I bet the 1's and 0's are more onesy and zeroey.

Combine it with the Diamond cable and the experience is probably almost phonographic. (Or is it, nevermind.)

Yeah I know disc days are hanging on a string, but I’m hoping it’s a long slow death. I know streaming is getting better, but currently disc still rule.

Amen -- I think discs up to 4K will linger -- look at LPs the format that will not die. In their farewell Oppo stated that they could not justify the cost of developing the next format player. I was hoping they could find a niche as a premium streamer which is a much easier proposition but they decided to chase cellphone glory.

If streamers would allow a decent buffer they could close the gap with discs, but they simply haven't done it for reasons I do not understand. Apple+ will if rumors are correct allow HD content to be downloaded for offline viewing. Not 4K yet, but it will happen eventually. Once that becomes common practice that ends the need for physical players of any format.

I expect that we will not see another disc format beyond 4K.

Bandwidth is at a premium, at least in this country with our semi-monopolist cable providers. Satellite can practically only provide so throughput. Even for fiber-optic transmission, every bit per second is exploited; there ain't any extra. Compression can only get file sizes/transmission rates so far. I think the streaming services rely on people being buzzed by (the terms) HD, 4K and HDR, while not really having a discriminating eye.

Unfortunately, generally, they are right. And those of us who Know and Care and seek out the superior performance of physical media are a minority.

Streaming video quality for those of us without bandwidth issues (I've got Gigabit FIOS service at home) has gotten to be very good. Probably not as good as the best that can be achieved on 4K UHD Bluray, but very good at least on a 77" display. Audio is another matter. Though the quality from streaming is pretty good, they aren't sending the lossless Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD Master Audio formats yet. The reality is that the vast majority of people would see zero benefit from using the extra bandwidth (what percentage of people actually have good or great audio systems...) and the streaming services are probably wise to focus on making the video as good as they can for now. But streaming quality has come a long way in just a few years and should only improve as time goes on.

Well, maybe more people, like the parent in this news story, are now realizing that their Disney / Marvel / Fox streaming favorites are at the whim of their marketing people, and that discs are the only medium that will allow their kids to enjoy them at any time:

Disney+ downloads will disappear when they leave the service (updated) | Engadget

I heard 5 year olds can be quite unreasonable when it comes to their favorite entertainment choices...

Yes, Fox titles are going into the "vault" now as well:

Not so sure I agree regarding cloud storage. Obviously cloud storage can fail just as a NAS in your house can fail, so standard data backup rules and procedures should apply. But data stored in your cloud storage should be fine, especially in the context of this discussion. Just make sure you pick a good cloud storage provider and use a strong password, etc. Long term availability of any content on a streaming service is a whole different situation as agreements with content providers change all the time, companies decide to retire titles, and so on.

I misspoke. I was referring to "cloud" storage for purchased titles from the various streaming services. Disney places classics in the "vault" .. even if you have purchased a title that gets vaulted, you will lose access to it if you drop their service.

Owning ... POSSESSING ... physical media is the only way to ensure availability.

Has anyone noticed the Oppo Sonica Speak app has been pulled from the Google Play Store? I just tried to install it on my new phone and it is nowhere to be found. Even the Link from Oppo's website no longer works.

Jumped into this thread because i have an Oppo Blu Ray player and simply love it's build quality. For me .. build quality is worth some cash.

All that being said .. is there a consensus best 4K Player in terms of build quality and performance ?

I figured the oppo forum would be a great place to start searching.
