I own a 78" Samsung HDR TV and there is a HUGE difference in Picture and SOUND quality between physical disc and Vudu UHD. Especially the sound is night and day difference.

Since OPPO is going the way of the DODO , I just pulled the trigger on the UDP-203! I have been putting off upgrading my HT to 4K long enough, but now is the time I guess. I must buy a 4K TV!

I have never owned an Oppo. I have a Panasonic UB900 that I chose because of the videos saying it had a better UHD picture than the 203.

Still, I know of the Oppo reputation and figured I'd one day own one anyway.

So this sucks, even though I'm not a customer of theirs.

So there was some rumbling about production and more coming in June must be in regards to the 203 model. They probably have a ton of the 203's and the 205 model had less produced.

Funny, but I just got off the phone with Oppo and they said "... unless there is another production run of the 205, [the only alternative] ... is the secondary market..." Well, that is true but why as a CS rep would one even intimate there'd be another run of the 205? A more sporting answer would be a simple, "No, none remaining." end of story unless....

What would a production run consist of numbers-wise, anyway? 500? 1000?

Don't you just wish HDMI would crawl off to some darkened corner and die a sad, lonely death?

Someone said earlier that a new run would entail buying the individual components in quantities of 10,000.

Just bought a 203. The 205s are already gone. My 103d was the best 1080p player I have had (and I have had a few) so I have no reason to believe the 203 will be worse. It already has Dolby Vision and I can live without HDR10+... which I think they will add anyway. What else is on the horizon? Nothing. Which means it will be a few years before something new comes out that the Oppos can’t do.

.... And the Blu-rays are far from dead. We want perfection- that is why we spend thousands of dollars and consider this hobby.... streaming will kill Blu-rays? I dont think so- any practical stream is a compromise. And even if it is visually indistinguishable- see the perfection sentence above- it will be stuck festering in the back of my mind. Ymmv

Haven't really followed the 205 but does it use the exact same transport as the 203 and all the differences are essentially on the audio side (yes, I know they are substantial)?

It uses the exact same transport as the 203.

There are power supply differences and other component differences in support of the enhanced Analog output solution, the Headphones output, and the additional Digital Audio Input types. It also includes the HDMI Audio Jitter Reduction Circuit on the Audio HDMI output.

Here's the comparison write-up from OPPO's Knowledge Base:

Also if you like to plug in your USB or external hard drive for those FLAC or DSD files, 203 can't help you but the 205 will use its DACs for the sound

^ Something to consider:

By the time you get a 205 from the proposed production run, the 203 players may very well be sold out. So you should have no problem reselling your few-month old 203.

Are you sure? The 203 will accept USB drives with .dsf files but unlike the 205 it does not have a USB DAC to stream .dsf files directly from a computer.

You most certainly can play flac or DSD files through an external hard drive or USB drive for that matter with the 203

^ The 203 can play FLAC and DSD files, too. For DSD the DACs in the 203 can be used either for DSD-Direct-to-Analog Conversion (at the expense of disabling any processing of the audio, such as down-mix or Crossover) or via preliminary conversion of the DSD to LPCM (which allows all the Analog output audio processing of the player).

The 203 does not have the Asynchronous USB DAC Input of the 205 (used to allow the 205 to act as as stereo "sound card" for direct streaming from a computer), but the 203 DOES have the same USB peripheral device sockets as the 205 -- used for attaching a hard drive for example for playing media files.
