My 203 is lonely and wants a big brother which is why I put my name on the queue for Oppo's 205. I just received an email from Oppo to confirm my email address, countering those naysayers, since if there wasn't any truth to another 205 production run, why bother asking for an email address confirmation? Only a sadist would do that with false intent. Which is to say encouraging but not confirmative.

Don't you just wish HDMI would crawl off to some darkened corner and die a sad, lonely death?

Of course, by necessity. If not most subscribers’ necessity, then by their necessity so they don’t saturate their pipes. The question is, is there a perceived visual difference and ... a big one closely related to it ... on what size display is the content being watched?

There’s Dolby Vision and HDR10 as well. I’d bet Dolby has performance requirements.

Unless HDR is like HD, strictly marketing blather to fool the rubes.

Hello,

As I had and some others had wondered since Oppo is going to be gone what would take it's place ???
Looks like there might be hope after all for us that don't wish to buy an Oppo with it dropping permanently.

Pioneer to fill 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player gap left by Oppo?
https://www.whathifi.com/news/pionee...-gap-left-oppo

Well guys hopefully one of the Companies will step-up and have something for us that didn't jump on the Oppo, hopefully.

IMO, Pioneer coming out with a UHD player is one thing and filling the gap left by Oppo is another thing entirely.

I haven't read through the entire thread, but will they continue to OEM these machines (Cambridge for example) or will they completely stop all production and shut down production facilities?

What are people thinking, should I try to pick up a 203 (I don't need the beefy audio section, I use an Esoteric SA-50 for SACD and D/A conversion), or wait for the next best thing? I have an Xbox One S, but I know it has it's issues.

With them ceasing production of Oppo players due to the greater profitability of making smartphones in their factory, that would be the end, period, of them making players in their factory. They are definitely NOT ceasing manufacturing, just manufacturing of players.

Most here are Oppo fans, so I think the consensus has been to buy an Oppo. A few here are hesitant, a few are not able to buy a "discontinued" player and the others ... have left ... or been chased off due to trolling.

Cambridge has stated that they have approximately 12 months of inventory. After that, they will continue to offer customer support only.

You can find the statement in the link below, article from Forbs dated April 2, 2018.

Thanks for the info. I was under the impression that the disc players were all made (or at least designed) by the Oppo Digital USA division of Oppo Electronics (in California) and that the smartphones were made in China and/or India by the parent company?

I have an old BDP-83 in my main system (which is still great). Just thinking it might be worth picking up a 203 for the main system and moving the 83 to my bedroom system. Have they updated Roon to version 1.5 in the Oppo 203/205 or have they already stopped with updates?

That's a possibility assuming Pioneer stays in business. I believe that Pioneer is in technically in Chapter 11 bankruptcy at the moment.

It goes like this; Onkyo purchased Pioneer in March, 2014. Onkyo/Integra was purchased by the Gibson Guitar Company in 2012. Gibson filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection May 1, 2018.

The dice are rolling....

The Oppo brand name and Oppo Digital are wholly owned by BBK Electronics, China. BBK owns the manufacturing facilities.

B Curry,

Doesn't look good then based on your post.
Well, there is little doubt one of the manufacturers will do their thing that's for sure.
Like anything over the years there is always another to take it's place as one drops off and another steps in.

Yea, I don't know what it means.

I think it just points out and underscores that Audio/Video consumer electronics is a commodity based business now. It doesn't matter so much who you buy from as most any AVR or disc player is a collection of many of the same assembled chips from a handful of manufactures who's standards are specified by the likes of the HDMI Organization, the Blu-ray Disc Association, etc., etc., etc. The only variation maybe the amplifier section in an AVR and with more and more companies using class D amplification, those modules are coming from just a couple of manufactures/suppliers too.

While the Oppo 203/205's have some added value via extra or combined features for analog support, it's more or less the same UHD player that comes from Sony, Samsung, etc. as they all use the Mediatek MT8581 chipset. Oppo paid extra for the customization/addition of Dolby Video and calls their's the OP8591 but it's still an MT8581 +DV chipset.

Digital audio/video standards have really become the great equalizer for hardware.

Yes, quite noticeably on a 65" OLED viewed from about ten feet away; PQ of streams is noticeably worse.

I'm 8' away from a 100" screen and my projector is calibrated, and it's very rare these days that I notice any difference. I'm 1080p only though and don't watch a lot of new, polished content. That probably matters.

Pioneer flopped with it's last two pricey players. It's last great players were the 05 FD and 09 FD Elite players. I still have the 05FD and a 51 FD players. I don't think TV's or disc players will be made anymore within 10 years. Seems many young people never watch tv and live with a dumb i phone stuck in their face.

I believe I also read that Oppo parts suppliers were increasing prices and it would be difficult for Oppo to manufacture products without raising prices.

Seems as though the audio industry is taking another hit, Shure ceased production of phono cartridges.

“I spoke with Shure's Mark Brunner, vice president of Global Corporate and Government Relations, to learn more about the company's decision to cease phono cartridge production. He explained while sales numbers have remained steady over the past 15 years, the 36 parts suppliers that made Shure cartridges, styluses, cantilevers, magnets, wire, etc. were struggling to keep up with demand and maintain the quality standards Shure requires”.

You may be right about optical disk players, but it seems way over the top to think that DISPLAYS, large I’d guess you are implying, will not be make in the near future. Snap out of it, man!

I would think that the yout aspire to having large TVs and aspire even more to eventually have a screen that fills a wall. Smartphones are a solo experience and maturing naturally leads to sharing and group social experiences. Eventually, most will want to have a few mates over to watch a game or Avengers 9.

The dice are rolling....
You missed a step. TCL bought Onkyo/Integra and Pioneer (and maybe Philips) from Gibson Innovations, and two weeks later Gibson (Guitars) filed for Chapter 11 to get rid of Gibson Innovations.

I don't think it was the "U.S. Government" that caused them to provide the high level, legendary even, of support that they have been providing nor do I think it will be that government that causes them to continue it.
