I think I understand where your coming from. In that era things like our gear weren't disposable, and saving up for a $700 Sony Superbeta have me a sense of see for the technology, but now everything is disposable and that's definitely a shame. I would have been giddy to get a Sony ED player, or a Sony digital 8 vcr, I was close but then DVDS came along and killed those formats.
But I do still dig the gear, specifically disc spinners and dvd/hdd recorders like the Magnavoxs.

He doesn't need BD for that. MeTV, one of those .2 channels in the age of digital television. Andy Griffith comes on about 10 times a day on various channels. So MeTV, TVLand, and a few others and you're done. You just need a DVR from your cable company, or magnavox sells a device that functions as a high def DVR, and if you are so inclined you can rip to DVD (standard def) only. You can get the magnavox device from Walmart (on-line). With the magnavox and a decent digital antenna, you don't even need cable.

Put my new 203 in the place of my 103D today. Firmware took all of maybe three minutes to update. So far haven’t had to change anything on my Harmony One to operate it. Currently listening to Tears For Fears-Songs From The Big Chair SACD 5.1 DTS-HD MA. Sounds just as I thought it would, sublime. Will watch Dunkirk after the basketball game ends on Blu-ray. Picking up a Sony X940E in two weeks. Put money down for my dealer to hold it. I have officially come down with “Upgraditus”. I thought my move to 4K and Atmos would take about two years. I doubt if it will take longer than Christmas at this rate.

With 4:3 content stretched to 14:9, destroying it in a way that cannot easily be fixed by consumer gear.

Plus a little secret - all those old TV shows were filmed on actual film, having resolution to HD and beyond, and can look absolutely spectacular on Blu-ray in a way never previously dreamed.

It's gonna be sad losing out on Oppo's designs. They were an (expensive) diamond in the rough, but man did they ever give you flexibility in how you configured your system. So much so that they covered virtually every esoteric edge case I could think of and then some. Gonna be some seriously hard electronic shoes to fill in, that's for sure.

Indeed. As alluded to in the Star Trek: DS9 Blu-Ray interview with Paramount's staff. Ironically, I have a better chance of seeing Emergency! on blu-ray than ST: DS9 because of...cheaping out on production via technology.

With this rumor being confirmed... What is oppo saying if anything about future software updates? Have they stopped supporting the 203 or still going to be releasing software updates? Ususally we see one every few months.. Either one is coming soon in beta form or not at all?

Oppo is saying there will be occasional firmware updates to fix bugs and/or improve current features, but not to add new features.

Though OPPO Digital will gradually stop manufacturing new products, existing products will continue to be supported, warranties will still be valid, and both in-warranty and out-of-warranty repair services will continue to be available. Firmware will continue to be maintained and updates released from time to time. Customers can rest assured that they will continue to receive the high quality service and support that they have come to expect from OPPO Digital.

What’s a PM-3? An Oppo Digital player?

Well, Guys and Gals the writing has been on the wall for some time. Look up and read it. Disk sales are down 21% over three years, streaming/downloading(legal) is up 35% over three years. All the major studios are about to kick off there own streaming/downloading service in the next 12 to 18 months. You won't need a disk player anymore. You can place those disks next to the VHS and BETA tapes.

And the payoff is never certain: Some observers contend that a generation has already been trained to be content with the small screen.

Some servers can do non-encrypted playback to an A/V projector, but it's just a ridiculously expensive media player if you don't have a cinema projector.

There is too much money invested in UHD and Blu-ray for it to vanish over complete streaming services.

How about special features? Are they going to include them too? And about 5.1 channel audio? I did not experience 5.1 channel streaming HD video yet. I bought some titles from HDTracks - it sucks compared with SACD or DVD-A or BDA. No liner notes, no album art, no any info where and how record was made, who are performers and authors, what is the context behind the album.
Operon, djreef and RagtopFE like this.

I have a fair number of movies on iTunes that have a bunch of bonus features and honestly cannot remember the last HD or 4K movies I have watched via streaming that didn't have 5.1. It's been many years that I haven't listened to 5.1 audio via streaming but it is all lossy, so BD has a certain advantage there with lossless audio.

Now physical media is absolutely my preference and I have two Oppo players and buy discs any chance I get, just trying to clarify having been a supporter of both streaming and physical.

I could care less whether the sales of physical media is down and streaming sales are up. I have a large collection of Blu-ray Audio, CDs, DVD-As and SACDs. With that I plan on playing them for years to come. I really don't care what "main stream" people are doing as they certainly aren't buying Oppo players. Pass the popcorn, will ya .
