Popcorn time!

Now there are the same number of posts about eating popcorn over a streaming vs. physical discussion as there are in that actual discussion!

Should I pop some more popcorn to eat while I watch you guys eat popcorn to make it real meta?

800? Wow, I don't understand that. I understand someone gouging the 4K players, particularly the 205, but headphones? I'm as big an Oppo fan as the next guy, but for 800 bucks there are a lot of headphones out there that I'd rather have. In the case of the 4k player there currently are no alternatives.

When streaming blows disc PQ out the water and we can get Atmos or DTS-X on the regular from all equipment and all outlets I’ll put the discs and machines out to pasture. I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

Might as well lock this thread. There's zero news to discuss and one of the relevant topics is - for some strange reason - off limits.

I would have preferred a 203 due to its supposedly superior HDR->SDR conversion. However, it doesn't do streaming so I bought a Sony instead. Even considering the near religious rejection of streaming as an acceptable way to enjoy content in this thread, there's no way I'm the only person who decided against the Oppo for that reason. But, let's not talk about that. Oppo is, was, and will forever be perfect.

This thread seems to be a dust magnet for "streamers".

I'm sure if Oppo Digital wanted to build a streaming device, it would be the best damn streamer on the market.

Many on this forum are audiophiles you know. Streaming is another word for MP3 and no Sony can replace OPPO. If you manage to find OPPO replacement it will cost you dearly like several times more than OPPO 205 since you would need several hi end components. Mainstream AVR will not do that.

I don’t believe the majority of people here are rejecting streaming, they prefer the PQ of the physical disk. I agree the Blu-ray PQ is better but the PQ on my Apple TV is pretty darn good, plus there’s a lot more content to choose from via Netflix and Amazon. I probably watch 2 Blu-ray movies a week but stream 6-7 episodes of a series each Sunday afternoon. Both have a place.

However, I’d bet the traffic here is good for vertical scope and their revenue scheme, so doubtful it will ever be locked .

OPPO is still selling 203 players and will be selling 205 players again in June. So there’s still Angst to be had from when they finally do run out of both.

Replacement Remotes

Just got around to ordering replacement remotes for my 103D and 203 players while they are still available. At $12.00 a piece plus shipping they are quite reasonable. I doubt I will ever need them but it's a little insurance in case the originals give out or decide to play hide and seek

Will the 203/205 motion sensor light remote work with the 103/105 models? I know some of the commands are the same but I'm not sure if there's anything else specific that would prevent replacing my current 103 remote with the 203 model.

Yes, I've seen that statement. But what about the promised Dolby Vision for Sony fix? Do they consider that a new feature? There are reports that Oppo is just waiting for Dolby to complete a certification process. It's been a while.

There are also reports that they were still considering an update to enable HDR10+, if the hardware was capable. Any news on that from the Oppo skunkworks? Or have the skunks all been released to the wild?

there are scads (gobs, loads, oodles?) of posts in the 203 thread about the already submitted to Dolby fix for the Sony DV fix. Long and short - it's in Dolby's hands and much twiddling of thumbs and wailing and gnashing of teeth is currently going on.

As to HDR10+, it has to compete with DV processing by the HDMI input, projector people desiring improvement of tone mapping and other sundry requests. I'd think it has an equivalent chance to those.

Just to be clear - "skunkworks" is not an insult. Sometimes used as a nod of respect for a group of engineers doing breakthrough work, in secret, or without much public recognition. It originated with the Lockheed group that developed several of the most advanced aircraft for the US military. More info here.

The Oppo has HDMI In so it can be partnered with a Roku stick, amazon fire stick, Nvida Shield or Apple TV. All of them superior to the on board streaming capabilities of any and all blu ray players. Partner the two and you have a complete disc and streaming combination with superior video processing.

Forgive my ignorance but other than passing the correct EDID info what other processing does the HDMI interface perform to distinguish say Dolby Vision from HDR+?

Don't you just wish HDMI would crawl off to some darkened corner and die a sad, lonely death?

You'd need to ask Oppo about that, whatever magic sprinkles they need to process. I know that the HDMI input currently processes HDR10 and DV is being investigated. I'd ask the folks with the Sherlock Holmes hats on and Oppo on their t-shirts.

$12.00? Each? Wow, that is very reasonable. Not a bad idea to pick up a spare!

Put my name on the 205 list, but did not reply to the "confirm email address". There has not been a firmware update since the original announcement from Oppo, so I'm waiting to see what kind of followup support there will be. I know what they stated, but want to see actual firmware followup. If they issue a firmware to address the UHD/SDR tone mapping then I will probably confirm my email address to get back on the June 205 list.
