Oppo to stop production? This is not a joke.

This has to be a hack of some sort.

Looks like this is true according to a well respected U.K. forum. Closing in the UK but can’t see any mention of the US.
Edit
Just seen that’s its worldwide.

drewTT 04-02-2018 03:28 PM

Looks legit. Damn...

Verge2 04-02-2018 03:29 PM

wtf. Someone had to buy all their I.P. or something.

Witchboard 04-02-2018 03:31 PM

I don't understand how they can maintain support if they aren't selling anything. That's just bleeding money.

bpassman 04-02-2018 03:31 PM

Sad news... and I'm sorry to see another great product company disappear. But like other technologies, things change. I suspect even with a huge following from AVS members, the age of streaming media may have impacted them too.

drewTT 04-02-2018 03:34 PM

April Fools was yesterday...

trammer 04-02-2018 03:36 PM

What the natural hell? Snap up your UHD players quik, everyone. Nobody builds them like Oppo!

Neuromancer 04-02-2018 03:37 PM

April Fools was yesterday, but unfortunately, this is real news. OPPO will no longer be manufacturing additional hardware, so what they have in stock and what is currently out there in the wild is the last of the OPPO Digital legacy you will see.

drewTT 04-02-2018 03:42 PM

So my 205 will now be a collector's item? lol

eljaycanuck 04-02-2018 03:43 PM

That's disappointing news. Farewell, OPPO! :(

Gary Bechtold 04-02-2018 03:44 PM

Wow. Not cool. Anybody know why they would stop? Are there any other Blu-Ray players that play DVD-Audio or SACD as well as every video format out there?

T-smith 04-02-2018 03:49 PM

Just saw this on Twitter as well

You would think someone would absorb them considering how good their products are

I have a 93 that is going strong. I have thought about getting a 203 while I still can, but your point is well made....how long can they continue to provide support without any sales? Judging from the various player threads for all makes, 4K/UHD/DV still seem to be evolving.

How long before they really shut the lights off?

Sony X800, but Sony is a far cry from Oppo in terms of service and support.

Hetfieldjames 04-02-2018 03:51 PM

Yeah I fall for this kind of BS all the time. I don't buy it.

well thats crappy.

kucharsk 04-02-2018 03:53 PM

Now all that will be left will be the comparatively poor LG and Sony players. :-(

Bummer I was contemplating my annual ht purchase a 203 and new speakers. Although the players are solid I fear no more firmware updates.

torii 04-02-2018 04:02 PM

panasonic were the goto players back in the day...well at least I thought they were :)

From their FAQ:

Quote:

Will there still be firmware upgrades for my OPPO products?

Yes, products will continue to receive firmware upgrades from time to time when new features or bug fixes warrant such an upgrade. Newer products such as the UDP-203 and UDP-205 will likely receive more frequent upgrades while mature products such as the BDP-103 and earlier models will only get firmware upgrades if there are critical fixes. If your player is connected to the Internet, you can check for firmware upgrades by going to the Setup Menu / Device Setup / Firmware Upgrade / Via Network. New firmware will also be posted on the support pages of the corresponding products (https://www.oppodigital.com/Support.aspx)

gravi 04-02-2018 04:03 PM

Doesn't make sense that they could not find any buyers. Niche, high end companies do thrive independently, if managed. Something to do with Chinese ownership? I doubt it.

Sonyboy 04-02-2018 04:11 PM

Damn, very sad to see this. I'm glad I got my 203 already. Looks like they will continue to issue firmware updates and offer warranty support.

CygnusX2112 04-02-2018 04:12 PM

Well that OPPO news ruined my day....

I just bought a 203 last week and have the same concern. On the other hand is it now going to become a desirable collectors item?

Had I known last week that they were shutting their doors I would not have bothered due to the uncertainty regarding future support, no matter what they say.

Airsculpture 04-02-2018 04:15 PM

Nothing on Google , I will wait for full news release, glad I got my 203 when I did though, don't regret it at all.

This has to be a hack of some sort.

The decision was made in China last year. But folks in the know had to keep mum... if you noticed, they were pretty quiet at CES and had little new info or products since last year. They were also dealing with quite a few returns on their 4k players, but the main thing is that phones cost less to make, and have a larger profit margin than 4k players.

Grab one while you can?

A real pity since I had every single BR player they ever made, even the Japanese Limited Edition..
