May be a stupid question, but the LC-500 is basically just a transport, right? I mean, it does not decode any audio. Just sends the raw audio to your processor or receiver by way of HDMI output. The data is then decoded on that end.

It has a stereo analog output but I haven’t tried it. I have a Yamaha A3070 receiver which converts all analog to digital. So they’re not useful to me. I have it connected as HDMI single mode.

I was thinking more along the lines of decoding Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio for movies. Needs to be decoded in either the player or the processor/receiver.

It can be decoded in the player and sent as PCM through the HDMI.

Great thanks. Gives me an option if the Panasonic UB 9000 doesn't make it here to the states.

Anyone know yet if analogue outputs are active while HDMI is active on this player? That seems to be the way the Panasonic 9000 does things. I have an OPPO 105 that has all outputs active at the same time which is great for switching between inputs on a processor if you are using more than one output on a player.

Excellent question! I've been following the Panasonic 9000 thread and would be curious if Pioneer has the same setup. I hope not. I use my Oppo 205 for both video and audio. I use HDMI for movies and multichannel music and the XLR output for 2ch music. It would be a serious PITA to have to go into the 205's menu every time I switched between HDMI and analog. Having all audio outputs active seems like the logical way to go. But for some reason Panasonic opted to go a different route.

Looking at the LX500 manual quickly I didn't see a menu setting between having digital or analog outputs active. On page 20 it shows the audio connection options. There is no mention of changing any setup options to make any specific audio output (digital or analog) active.

I use my 105 in the same way. I have the XLR outs connected to the cd input on my AV-8805 processor and the HDMI output connected to the Blu-ray input and never have any issues going back and forth or have to go into a menu to change the audio from HDMI to analogue.

They’re active on the LX500 at all times.

Take it from a longtime Panny guy. They always do some quirky things with their equipment. They label things like no one else and place things deep inside the menu in places it shouldn’t be. On top of that, until recently they built the ugliest electronics known to man. And they still have terrible remotes.
OTOH, their stuff has been bulletproof. At least for me.

Glad to hear that. Mine shipped today and I have always been a fan of Panasonic TVs but never owned a disc player by them. I have owned several Pioneer Elite players before OPPO came along and cornered the market on Blu-ray players so it feels like a natural migration to go back down the Pioneer Elite road. I’m really excited to see how it looks on my upconverting JVC RS-4810 as I patiently wait for the replacement RS-2000.

The LX500 seems to be a good candidate for when I upgrade to UHD and leave the trusty Oppo BDP-93EU behind, but still want to listen to my SA-CD. As many others I was a bit sad that Oppo exited the player market, and was considering to buy the BDP-203 just in case there was no good universal player for UHD.

A very nice feature of the Oppo is subtitle shifting that even the LX500 has, according to the user manual.

The Oppo and my Panasonic plasma was bought 7 years ago, and now that it appears that OLED is becoming more mature technology it might be time to upgrade next year or so.

That’s what I like , some weight . Not this 12 ounce plastic Panasonic 820 thing I just bought . I have a Marantz Blu Ray player, and it’s also a tank . No transport noise is a bonus with these heavy units

LG OLED65B7P.
Anthem AVM60 , Anthem MCA525 .
Panasonic DP-UB820 UHD player .
Paradigm Studio CC690 V5 centre channel , Studio 100 V5’s front and rear . Paradigm PW-2200 subwoofer

Has anyone tested the LX500 on a projector yet? If so, how is the “projector” tone mapping setting on it for a projector? Does it create a sufficiently bright image when displaying HDR? I assume there is no dynamic contrast slider (as there is with the Panasonic players).

I have a JVC DLA-RS4810 4K eshift projector right now that this will be connected to via a Marantz AV-8805. That projector will be replaced by the new native 4K JVC RS-2000 when it is available to ship sometime late November after the first wave of preorders ship. Probably early December before I get mine. I am looking forward to seeing how it does over a Celerity fiber cable but not expecting to be able to view true 4K until I get the new projector. I should have mine hooked up tomorrow evening if all goes well and I can get the house to myself tomorrow night. Stay tuned!

I guess we have to wait until an owner decides to start a owners thread. I’m curious to know how the tone mapping works too.

Hello! I ordered a LX500 last week, and i'm supposed to receive it next week. On this new player, there is two HDMI outputs, one for audio and one for both audio and video. Pioneer tell that it's better to use them separatly. I presently own a Pioneer Elite LX901 AVR, and i want to know if there is a way to plug both HDMI on this AVR without going directly to the TV... thank for your help!

You shouldn't need to use both HDMI outputs. The main one for video will also carry the audio. Just use the one labelled 'main'. Two are for people who don't have a 4k capable avr.

Got my mine set up yesterday and it will display 4K discs on my current JVC non native 4K projector. Looks great and easy to operate. I have not tried any of my SACD or DVD Audio discs yet but the settings menu is pretty easy to configure everything. I have it sitting on top of my OPPO BDP-105. I’ll send a pic later but so far this new player is a beast! Watched the 4K version of Ant Man & the Wasp earlier before football started and I have no issues with this player. I did not expect to see an image coming from my projector but I think the player is doing automatic down conversion to 1080p.

Yes, I'm interested in the tone mapping also. The manual shows it has a "TV Type" selection (LCD, OLED, Projector), plus three "HDR / SDR Presets" for target brightness (so no slider, just 100, 300, 700 - I guess nits?).
