Grabbed one of these today from an Open Box buy at Best Buy.

I grabbed a couple of Blu-ray discs from Redbox and am impressed.

My wife actually said, "I have to say, I can see why it might be good to have a bigger screen, this is so detailed.". Couldn't believe that.

I have this connected to an HW-N950 and an LG OLED65B7A. Works great with CEC/SimpLink/Viera.

Only issue so far is that a menu that says it is a pop-up menu with the OPTION button comes up and won't go away until I turn off the unit. Happened twice, once when I paused so long it shut off and then when I put a DVD in. Is this a common problem on the player? Has the latest firmware and seems to work perfectly otherwise. Atmos and stellar video from the unit.

That was exactly what I had to do. Thanks! Would help if it had a Viera logo or something. I thought it was a menu the player remote could manage.

Thanks to your note, though, I checked out the LG remote further and found a full blown SimpLink menu and the player is completely compatible with it. Awesome! Home, menu, info, etc. All easily acessible.

I need help with my new 820 and I hope I can get it without reading over 100 pages of this forum.
My setup is a Yamaha Aventage RX-A3070 AVR 7:1:4 and I have an Optoma UHD60 Projector. From what I have read in the instructions for the 820 connecting to a projector refers only to 2K projectors. I would appreciate instructions on connecting the 820 to my AVR and my projector. Please make it as simple as possible. It's rather new and I'm 71 and I would appreciate simple instructions. Is it possible to have it sent to my email at [email protected]? Thanks.

Do I understand correctly that the 820 can be configured to do the mapping of Dolby Vision content for transmission to an HDR10-capable (non-DV) TV? If so:

1. What values are supported in the 820 for specifying the nits of the TV?

2. Does anyone have experience to share, when using a high-end Samsung TV like the Q9FN, comparing the 820 doing DV mapping vs having the Samsung do the mapping of the original HDR10 content?

I was wondering how you have your projector set up with the 820. Do you have an amplifier/receiver? I'm having a little difficulty understanding the manual. I have my 820 connected to the AVR and then to my Optoma UHD60 projector, but I'm not quite sure if I have it right.

Yes if you have a newish AVR that can handle switching 4k video, it's easiest to run everything through your AVR. So hdmi out of the 820 to an hdmi input on your AVR, then hdmi out of the AVR to hdmi in on your projector.

Not sure what you mean by referring to only 2K PJ's. This is a 4K player and of course works with 4K pjs. Hook it up through your avr which I trust has hdmi 2.2 passthrough. Then follow the players easy set up.

How can I turn upscaling of 1080P content to 4K on and off?

The 820 should be hooked up via HDMI to whatever input you prefer on your Yamaha (I have mine going to the Blu-Ray input of my Marantz). Make sure to use the Video/Audio output from the Panasonic to the Yamaha. Then connect your projector to the output of your Yamaha via HDMI.

Not sure what the 2k reference in the manual is to, as your projector and the 820 are 4k.

No, the UB820 can't convert Dolby Vision to HDR10. The UB820 can convert DV to SDR for SDR display devices only. This is performed by utilizing a Dolby provided API. The UB820 has no settings that can adjust the output.

1. HDR Display Type set to Projector (500 nit). This setting is only used when the UB820 is set to HDR output mode. Not used for SDR/BT2020 mode or when outputting Dolby Vision.

2. The UB820 cannot perform Dolby Vision tone mapping. Dolby Vision tone mapping is always performed in the Dolby Vision supported TV.

Is that going to down scale 4k?

My goal is to leave 4k as 4k, and not upscale 1080p.

I think your initial post asked how to turn off upscaling of 1080p. You have me all confused.

If you are playing a 4k disk and you want it to output 4k, wouldn't you just leave it on "Auto"?

I'm confused by how all this works. I'm awaiting a new projector that doesn't support Dolby Vision (none do at present as I recall). So if I want to play a 4k HDR disc in my UB820 and get an HDR picture, do I need to make sure it is in the HR10 format? Are there some DVD's that are only in Dolby Vision, and if so, what will happen if you play that in the UB820 with a projector that doesn't support Dolby Vision?

My bad. Yes - I’m wanting to turn upscaling of 1080p content off and let my projector do it. I want to see how it handles the content compared to my 820.

My current projector is a 1080p projector, so as I recall, when I first got my UB820, I went into the settings (I think it was the Resolution setting) and set it to 1080p. I think I was counting on letting my new NX7 do the upscaling (when I get it -- hopefully this week), but from what I've read lately, it sounds like it might be better to have the 820 do it. But just like you're doing, I'll want to do a comparison.

Far as I know, all HDR movies contain a base HDR10 layer (mandatory) so you should be fine with your projector.

That’s what I’ve read too. DV sits on top of the base HDR10 layer.

The UB820 does not have a Source Direct option like the Oppo has that ourputs 1080P as 1080P and 4K as 4K.

With the UB820 you can either force all content to 1080P where 4K will be downscaled as well, or allow the player to upscale 1080P to 4K.

All UHD discs have a HDR10 base layer. It is mandatory. Dolby Vision and/or HDR10+ can be optionally layered on top of the base HDR10. If your projector supports HDR10, then you will always get the HDR10 base layer sent from the UB820.

With the Netflix App, even though the App may show a title is available in Dolby Vision, you will get HDR10 to your projector.

I can't for the life of me figure out how to display the metadata screen (the one with info on max luminance etc.)
Neither the STATUS or PLAYBACK INFO button brings it up for me. Am I completely missing something here? (most likely, yes )

Because it doesn't exist on the UB820. Only the UB9000 includes metadata in the Information screen.

Neither the STATUS or PLAYBACK INFO button brings it up for me. Am I completely missing something here? (most likely, yes )
Because it doesn't exist on the UB820. Only the UB9000 includes metadata in the Information screen.
Ah! Well that certainly explains it. I was sure I read on here that you could bring it up on the 820 too, but I'm obviously mistaken. Oh well, that's what the Oppo is for then I guess!

Hey all

I am currently using a Sony X-700 4K UHD, I am going into a 2018 E series OLED, One of the things that I found interesting was the Tone Mapping of the Panasonic, I am trying to decide to ditch the Sony and get this Panasonic, I have not had a single issue with the Sony and the picture is very nice, however my OLED has Tone Mapping when HDR content is active. I guess want I want to know is those that own this player, do you think it would be a worth while upgrade for me? Would the Tone Mapping in the Panasonic be better than the tone mapping in my OLED? Also, I have not seen this, but does anyone know if they have made the Panasonic 820 ABC and dvd region free with a mod? I am debating paying too much money for an Oppo 203, or getting the Panasonic, or just leaving the Sony in there... Thanks!
