When you set the Panasonic’s output is to “SDR”, you’re not prohibiting it from “decoding HDR” - it’s the exact opposite, i.e., you’re asking it to do all the work so that the projector doesn’t need to do any.

A couple of questions, if you please :

You have the Dynamic Range of the projector set to "off"?

Also, with the color gamut on the panasonic set to SDR, how are tou able to access the HDR optimizer? If I try that, a window pops up and says "this function is valid only during HDR video playback". Then if I set it to HDR2020, I can then access that menu.

Lastly, does this make any sense at all

"Fortunately, the Panasonic UHD Blu-ray player you bought is a perfect match for the deficiencies of the Optoma's handling of HDR. It allows you to take the incoming HDR data and remap it to SDR data so that it can display as HDR on an SDR-configured display"

How does SDR become HDR with all HDR settings turned off?
My HDR Optimizer setting is set to on, so it is doing tone mapping for SDR BT.2020. True, you can not access the HDR Optimizer menu though, so that is why you would set the Dynamic Range Conversion Adj setting.

SDR becomes HDR with the enabling of bt2020 color space plus the tone mapping with the HDR optimizer enabled, at least that is how I understand it.

As far as HDR deficiencies with the Optoma, that is somewhat debatable. I have great success with watching HDR content on the UHD60 using my Nvidia Shield. However, the SDR setting with bt2020 and HDR Optimizer on for the 820 results in an even better picture.
I see. So you're saying that even though you can't access the HDR optimizer menu, it should still be active and working, yes? I guess just have to set the parameters with it on HDR2020 first?

And you do have your dynamic range set to off with the Optoma?

Thanks again

Thinking about getting this player to pair with my new Q90R. I have an Xbox One X which I’ve been using as a 4k player. Will there be a noticeable different between this player and the X1X?

If you can't access the HDR Optimizer using the Options button while playing a UHD HDR disc in SDR/BT2020 output mode, then switch the UB820 to HDR output mode, play a HDR disc, and use the Options button to bring up the Optimizer menu and turn it ON.

Once it is turned ON, change the UB820 back to SDR/BT2020 output mode. Then when playing any HDR disc, pressing the Options button will bring up the Optimizer menu where you can adjust the "Dynamic Range Conversion Adj." slider control to either increase brightness but with less contrast, or decrease brightness to get more contrast.

The Options button on the remote, not the HDR button.

Yes, what @claw said.

As for the dynamic range setting, I assume you're talking about the Optoma? I think it's set to auto, but I'd have to check.

Curious to know if there would be any advantage to running a separate Audio HDMI and Video HDMI cable as there are 2 outputs on the back the of 820. Currently I am running a single HDMI for both Video and Audio to a Denon 4400 in Bitstream mode and the receiver is processing it as Atmos as it should be when watching a disk. Not a big deal to run another HDMI but the less cables the better unless there is a particular reason to run them separately.

The two HDMI outputs are for folks that own AVRs that don't support 4k. In that case you run the video to the TV and the audio to the AVR. If your AVR supports 4k passthrough then you can run the video/audio output to the AVR and then the AVR output to the TV.

OK, so I did what you said... Turned it back to HDR2020, turned the optimizer back on from the options menu and then switched it back to SDR2020.

However, still, when I press the options button during the same HDR source material, it tells me "this function is only valid during HDR output".

I just updated to the latest firmware today.

Can you guys check and see if it's still working for you, making sure you're in SDR output?

No I didn't miss them
I am sure OPPO didn't mind the complaints probably far less complaints than if they had provided apps
I dare say that they wished that they had not provided a HDMI input either

When do you get the message? When you press the Options button? You can't turn the Optimizer ON/OFF from SDR/BT2020 but if the Optimizer is turned ON, then you can access the Dynamic Range Conversion Adjustment slider which is all you really need to do.

If you can't do this I don't know what else to suggest.

Yes, when I press the options button. I've gone back and verified at least 5 times the the HDR optimizer is set to on. And each time I go back to SDR2020, I can bring up the options menu, yes, but accessing the dynamic range slider does this (see attached).

If it is not too much trouble, can you please humor me and ensure that you're set on SDR2020, and then try to select the HDR optimum adjustment, which you must do to get to the dynamic range slider? If you can still access it, what firmware are you on? Thanks very much.

The attached picture won't display for me. I only use SDR/BT2020 mode.

Here is a link to a post in the JVC thread where I provided the same instructions and the original poster succeeded.

You are playing a UHD disc? Not trying while playing Netflix or Amazon? Netflix won't even send SDR/BT2020. Amazon will but I don't think you can access the Optimizer to make settings adjustments.

Ah, so I guess that's it... I was trying all of the internal apps. So the 820 will not do the tone mapping for any of its own apps?

I did try Amazon Prime, Netflix and YouTube for stuff that should have been HDR.

I was about to take a hammer to this thing!

The HDR Optimizer works with both Netflix and Amazon if you are in HDR output mode. You can tell if you have a way to display the metadata that the UB820 outputs. It has changed the metadata to match the HDR Display Type configured.

It will output SDR/BT2020 for Amazon. Netflix App has what I believe to be a bug and outputs SDR/REC709. But it is difficult to tell what the Optimizer might be doing or not doing for Amazon. One thing I meant to try, but haven't got around to, is adjusting the Dynamic Range Conversion Adj. slider to its maximum position while playing a UHD disc. Then play an Amazon HDR title. Repeat with the slider set to the minimum position. If the Optimizer is working with Amazon there should be an obvious difference in brightness level between the two slider positions.

So curious discussion starter....I read a lot about settings for 4k HDR movies on our 820, but curious as to settings people with 4k projectors are using on 820 to watch Blurays? As a lot of movies haven't converted over to 4k HDR yet I'm sure a lot of us are still watching Blurays on here as well.

I don't think I use any non standard setting for blu-ray, and I do watch a lot on my projector.

I do love it for the subtitle shift and luminance though. Best Feature Ever. I just wish it remembered settings between discs.

Does anybody else have trouble getting the metadata information on the 820 when playing a 4k HDR disc? My understanding is that you have to hit the Playback Info button twice in succession. But when I do that, I only get the more limited information that you get if you hit the button once (such as the audio format and whether it is outputting SDR or HDR). Hitting the Playback Info button twice does not seem to give me the screen that I've seen in some videos that show, among other things, the metadata values.

If you can't do this I don't know what else to suggest.
Go back and re-press the button and hold it down. You can’t give a quick touch.

Hitting the Playback Info button twice does not seem to give me the screen that I've seen in some videos that show, among other things, the metadata values.
I believe metadata reporting is unique to the UB9000.

Sorry for all the questions... I am slowly making my through all 120 pages of this thread.
No, the HDR Optimizer settings are only available in SDR/BT2020 output mode when playing a UHD disc that contains HDR.

The Optimizer settings are only available for Netflix and Amazon when the player is in HDR output mode and playing an HDR title.

I did some testing with the Dynamic Range Conversion Adj. slider and it appears to me that the setting value configured during HDR output mode is completely ignored when playing Amazon HDR content in SDR/BT2020 output mode. This was disappointing. My guess, and this is only a guess, is that in SDR/BT2020 output mode a default tone map is used to map Amazon HDR to SDR/BT2020 and the Optimizer may not be utilized.

weird problems

just got mine plugged in. Noticed the home screen switches back and forth between 1080p and 4k. The settings menu kicks me back out when I am trying to change settings and I am not getting any audio out. I think I may have a lemon.

Update: maybe i dont have a lemon. I have isolated the problem to the players hdmi audio out. I am using a non 4 k reciever so the hdmi audio out is plugged into the reciever. I have other things such as a dish hopper plugged into the reciever and the reciever hdmi out is to another input on the tv. Basically, when the hdmi out from the reciever is unplugged from the tv then the hdmi audio out from the player works and outputs sound to the reciever. I need help. Any idea if the problem would be with the tv or the reciever? CEC is turned off on the tv as well as the tv speakers but something about the hdmi out from the reciever being hooked up to the tv causes the player to not output sound to the reciever. I have the hdmi video out set as auto and the hdmi audio out set as audio only. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks
