We just have to hope that eventually all tone mapping will be of the Dynamic frame by frame analysis kind where metadata won't matter.

Maybe the announced MadVR Envy product will be more affordable than the Lumagen Radiance Pro and easier to configure than a MadVR HTPC.

I agree and that was how I would have thought they'd do it from day one. Just like a dynamic iris on a projector. And the engineer/software developer side of my mind is continually screaming why is it like this currently and so illogical? I gave up on logic when after a lifetime of music playback media, vinyl, 8 track, casette, CD to mp3, suddenly with the advent of MP3 gapless playback didn't exist. Something that just worked since the first wax disc Edison recorded suddenly didn't, with something so simple and intrinsically needed.

So the MadVR Envy might be able to handle this? Hmm, will investigate

Is the HDMI Audio output strictly Audio, or does it have the capability of passing audio&video like the HDMI Video output?

I believe it is capable of video as well, but both can't be outputting HDR at the same time.

General observation: I've been following this thread since last summer and finally replaced an ancient Oppo near the beginning of this year with an 820. I thought I needed it to complete my upgrade cycle to 4K UHD. Then I learned that when I upgraded my Netflix membership to 4K UHD, it only upgraded some streaming movies, not the Blu Ray disks I now get. So now I have this incredibly complex piece of hardware that would stymie a rocket scientist, with nothing to play on it unless I start a new movie collection. And... I'm an old guy with a strong preference for "set it and forget it". This player doesn't seem to want to be forgotten! I will say it makes the Blu Rays look stunning, but $500 is a lot for that feature, and I don't even know if the player settings are dialed in right.
That rant aside, it occurs to me that this thread could be a lot shorter if it was split into users with projectors and those with flat panels.

My understanding is that if video is output from both terminals, even the Video terminal cannot output 4K, HDR or 3D.

Interestingly the AV specialist I bought from said that Oppo, Samsung, and Sony have pulled out from making UHD players so it won’t be long before everything is non disc. Thoughts?

If however they had services that were secure digital libraries of the same quality as uhd, that I could download in advance I may be interested, but still only if I couldn't get disc.

You can still buy CDs. I still buy CDs.

2). This has been discussed extensively. In the HDR mode with Optimizer On, the UB820 tone maps the source material down to the display setting level (e.g., 1000 nits) and sets the metadata accordingly. The TV does whatever it’s designed to do when receiving 1000 nits - either nothing, or additional tone mapping.
Has anyone successfully gotten the front display on the 820 to turn off when watching a movie...as Dom mentioned it is a high clarity sound setting but as far as I can tell I can only get the display to turn off when setting high clarity sound to video off which means the tv screen is blank also...any advice would be appreciated...thanks

Anyone ever have the 820 lock up (freeze) during 4k UHD BD playback? Disc was clean but this happened a couple times to me last night...

You need to set it on settings before playback. And then during playback you bring up options and in the play back options there is a high clarity setting and you turn it on there too. It is very strange. But gee in it nice having it off.

Thanks, what’s TOTALLY WEIRD is the setting to turn the front display off is in the Audio menu in the settings menu...typically that kind of stuff is in the “general” menu...

Often if I unfortunately let it go past 20 minutes and it automatically shuts off when I press play again to resume the little option menu with the circle like for the remote pops up in the lower right hand corner of the screen allowing to use certain buttons for play/pause/stop and stating the display can be controlled via the option button. However, when I press this or back button or anything else it refuses to come off the screen. As if it’s stuck. It will play content and everything just fine just won’t remove the guide. Upon trying to go to home menu it won’t load anything but a black screen. If I power down and power back up the guide still won’t go away. The only way it does is if I hard reset by pressing and holding the power button which I know can’t be great for the player. Anyone else have this happen? Wondering if there’s anything I can do aside from a hard reset to resolve the issue. Thanks so much in advance.

All depends on what display you have it connected to. I have my 820 connected to a projector and use sdr2020 and HDR Optimizer ON, works well with my jvc

Just curious.
I am going to be upgrading to a 4k projector shortly. I currently have a 1080p projector. Are any of you using the UB820 with a 1080p projector?
Has it helped improve your image?

Anyone have suggested settings for this player. I’m using a new Samsung Q90r and I feel like something is slightly off. When watching 1080p Blu Rays, it almost looks like a cable feed. 4k content looks pretty great though. I previously watched Blu rays on an Xbox One and a 2015 Samsung, and remember the PQ being much sharper, which I know shouldn’t be the case.
