Bottom line with the Optimizer; if it's on, I'm tone mapping, correct?
Yes, but there is tone mapping whether the Optimizer is turned on or off. Tone mapping is required to output SDR/BT2020. Kris Deering summarized how the Optimizer works in SDR/BT2020 mode in one of the other forums.

Basically, it looks at the MaxDML (Mastering Display Max Luminance) and MaxCLL (Maximum Content Light Level) metadata values and determines a tone map to use.

If MaxDML and MaxCLL are both 0, use a default 1000 nit tone map.
If MaxCLL = 0 then tone map to MaxDML
If MaxCLL < MaxDML then tone map to MaxCLL nits.
If MaxDML < MaxCLL then tone map to MaxDML nits.

If the Optimizer is turned off, then the default 1000 nit tone map is always used.

Note that this is how the Optimizer works in SDR/BT2020 output mode. It works differently in HDR output mode where it uses the HDR TV Type setting to determine the tone mapping target.

So yea I had to order from a magnolia best buy and have it shipped to their store which would be quicker. Still strange that only magnolia's have it and it's out of stock months after its released.

Has to be Panasonic, because Best buy and ValueElectonics are the only two selling it and both are out of stock.

Is there a way to change the time the player goes to sleep?

In MI Fallout it times out in 5 minutes and does not resume. Really annoying.

Just watched a standard DVD (The Jacket) on the 820, and was very impressed with the upscaling.

I have never heard of the player going into sleep mode while playing a disc. Could it have been an HDMI cable failure?

Sorry I was unclear. When paused after 5 minutes the player shuts off. Other disks offer to resume but Fallout starts from the beginning including needing the menu language to be set again.

Hey folks,
Just about to wire this all up.

Has anyone done any testing to see if there is any geniunely noticeable diference between sending the audio straight down the single HDMI to the AVR with the image, and splitting video / audio between two seperate HDMI cables as suggested in the manual?

I would think the only reason to split it is if your AVR cant pass 4k hdr

This is really annoying. It should go to a screensaver after 5 minutes, not turn itself off.

Is there anyway to communicate this to Panasonic to see if we can get a firmware update to add a menu item so that this "feature" can be turned off?

Also, there needs to be a way to turn off that annoying "Now reading..." message.

Pre-empting setup later today.
I see the Optimiser asks you to choose a Luminance capability.

Would you guys choose OLED for a Samsung Q9FN?
I know its not OLED, but its also known to be perhaps the brightest TV ever tested.

Im not sure what this optimiser is trying to do other than choose a brightness limit for HDR content maybe?

Stu

Will the Optimizer be of value with the new Sammy Q900R with a reported 3000 nit brightness in "movie" mode and 4000 nits in vivid mode? As I understand the need for the optimizer, it compensates for a display that can't reach a mastering standard of 4000 nits. If a display can reach the same as the mastering monitor, and as I understand a lot of movies are not graded to 4000 nits, does the Optimizer add any value?

Does the HDR optimizer work for HDR media streamed through the 820 player's apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime?

I encountered a strange situation with the new Mission Impossible Fallout UHD disc. My UB820 would only output Dolby Digital 5.1. Played another Atmos disc and it was OK. Played the MI disc again and only 5.1. Finally, I pulled the power cord from the UB820 and restarted. Then it played Atmos.

Picture turns Off and On

Hi Guys,
Got my 820 and I have Vizio P65. I was just wondering if any one have this experience that when playing any video from 820, the screen would be blank every 5 seconds or so. I wonder if there is any setup i'm doing wrong.

Sounds like something in the chain isn’t up to snuff and/or full 18Gbps capable, like the cables, receiver, etc.

Really should try and get certified cables. Monoprice is tough to beat and I believe Amazon sells them if you don’t want to shop Monoprice’s shop. Return the basics cable and get the certified Monoprice cables. At least you can eliminate cable as an issue if you have any more problems.

Yes, it does. In fact, you have different HDR settings for UHD discs and streaming services like Netflix and Amazon. I love my ATV 4K as a streamer but Netflix HDR movies on Panasonic 820 look just beautiful. Mostly if you own a 4K HDR projector like me.

Only issue is the lip sync with Netflix. It’s broken since the latest firmware update.

This thread is much too large to go through, and googling has yielded no results.

Is there any option to turn off upscaling when playing a regular bluray disc?

I know I can manually go to setup and set output to 1080p, but it seems rather cumbersome to have to manually change resolution every time I switch between playing a UHD disc and a regular HD disc.

So is there any way to get ahold of one of these? My Magnolia salesman basically looked at the sticker on the wall and told me there weren't any in the store. He seemed surprised when I told him it was special order only. He finally looked it up on their internal computer and said it was sold out everywhere. Is this thing really that scarce?
