Netflix and Amazon Prime apps

I'm having problems with both of these apps on the 820.

The Netflix app has an a/v sync issue, as others have noted. One poster said that pausing and unpausing the video would fix the sync, but that doesn't work for me.

The Amazon Prime app has a small but noticeable stutter on UHD material about every 30 seconds or so. Anyone else seeing this? If so, is there a fix?

Even nearfield, I’d need an 88” to replicate the 120” screen, but I’ve been seduced by the clarity and “pop” of OLED on 4k HDR which I haven’t been able to replicate on my JVC. Yes, there’s much to be said about the impact of a large screen, but my priority at this time is to get the best looking images possible (albeit in a smaller presentation).

Hey all,
Long time lurker. Purchased the 820 alongside the Sony KD43xf8096bu tv and Sony STR-DN1080 amp. Absolutely floored by the UHD player but really the HDR optimizer has been a godsend! Do people generally adjust the optimizer settings on a per film basis? BR2049 looks astonishing with the settings I plucked, yet Dunkirk and Interstellar required different settings. I don't mind this as it literally takes 2 seconds of my life. I've then jot the settings down on a wee scrap of paper for future viewings 8). There's hardly any reviews out in the wild for the TV but I im really impressed with the TV's brightness.

I still have an issue when playing the network apps after a discs that I have to unplug the unit to avoid the 24% spinning wheel on Netflix. How do we get Panny to issue an update for their apps?

One thing, in the UB820's Options menu I noticed no difference when I turned the HDR Optimizer On or Off. Then regardless if the HDR Optimizer was on or off I did notice quite a difference when adjusting the Dynamic Range Slider, White Tone, and Black Tone. I assumed the HDR Optmizer had to be On for those following settings to have any effect? The onwer's manual gives no detail on any of this.

I have the UB820's Dynamic Range set to SDR BT.2020 so I assume that means it's built-in TM is "on". What does the HDR Optimizer do then? Have my Epson set to what I feel are good settings...Epson owners please chime in.

I have only occasionally seen the sync issue on Netflix but not much. I get the stuttering on Amazon as well and is constant for me. I too am wondering if everyone is seeing this but it does seem to be a common problem. There doesn't appear to be a fix though as of yet hopefully they will come up with something soon.

I think that this is more of an issue with Amazon and Netflix as I see it on every tv in my house and other places too.

I just got my UB820 hooked up today and everything seems to be working okay with my JVC RS4810 and it looks similar to my Oppo 203. The big test will be when I get my new JVC RS2000 so I can see the true beauty of 4K!!!

To those who use the Pana with a JVC - how come people recommend using a 'User' picture mode on the JVC when using the Panasonic player rather than just editing the original HDR mode? I've just edited my original HDR mode to the settings you recommended as it's right there on the remote.

I just got a UB820 and I am having trouble trying to discover how to set it into HDR to SDR/BT2020 mode for my JVC x750r projector. Is there a specific setting somewhere in its menus that I'm just missing?

Has anyone timed how long it takes the DP-UB820 to load Blu-ray discs? I'm upgrading from a 10 year old Pioneer Blu-ray player that loads very slowly.

Thanks!

Movies must be OAR, sports and movies must also have 5.1 audio, No EE or NO SALE!

Unlike the most recent models, the 2015 JVC HDR projectors do not have an HDR picture mode built-in and it is pretty much required to create a custom mode for every type of signal; HDR, SDR BT.2020, HLG, etc.

That is a good question. I haven't done much but use it in the past 3+ years. Guess I need to check that out.

Did I get a return?

My 820 came with Best Buy branded tape sealing the box. Did they sell me a return or refurb for full retail price or do they have a deal with Panasonic for branded box tape?

See ya. Dave

I bought an 820 from Best Buy (a store, not shipped). The box was sealed with clear, unmarked tape. Proves nothing, I suppose. It wouldn't surprise me if BB had some sort of special deal with Panasonic. The 820 seems to be hard to come by elsewhere.

If you're really concerned, check to see whether there's a layer of tape under the BB tape. It may be hard to tell.

If it was me, and I found evidence that the box had been opened, I might try to persuade the BB manager to give me an open box discount. (If it was refused, and the 820 works normally, I might keep it regardless. They're scarce.)

Mine from BB was factory sealed with clear tape. If it was sealed with BB tape, then they opened it for some reason, or it was a return. I'd make them give you an open box price adjustment, or exchange it for a factory sealed unit.

Hey Guys - Is anyone here using the UB820 with the Optoma UHD65?

I just switched to the 820 from a Sony X700, and I see a lot of grain during dark scenes - super prevalent in Mission Impossible Fallout and The Greatest Showman. I do NOT see these on my x700.

Hoping there are others out there with this same combo so I can figure this out. Thank you in advance!

These are my settings on my UB820 -

And here are my settings on my UHD65 -

Hi all,

Just bought an 820, and was disappointed to see from the menus that I can't output 2 channel down-mixed audio at the same time as audio over HDMI. I had planned to use the 2-channel output to pipe the movie soundtrack out to my 2-channel whole-house audio system while using the bitstream in the theater. (So you can still hear the movie in the bar/kitchen/outside, for example)

Can anyone confirm that this doesn't work? Are there any settings that I can get bitstream out on the HDMI with some form of 2 channel on on any of the other outputs (optical or analog)?

I see the title of the thread is "820/824" -- maybe there is a different version of the panny that doesn't have this limitation?

Thanks in advance,
--Carey

Decided to buy this player.
And I am confused...

Where is the HDMI in, on this player?

Can I hook my Apple TV 4k to it? to stream Netflix and watch iTunes 4k HDR movies?
Does it work well with Apple TV?

Does anyone use the 820 with a Sony VPLHW40ES projector? Specifically what I'm interested in is setting the color space. BT.709 is available but no selection for BT2020. The menu does have 3 other choices but they are vague. Ie 1 (tv, sports), 2 (bright environment), 3 (movies).

Any suggestions? I assume most people using this player with a non-UHD projector are in the same situation.

Short answer, there isn't one. No HDMI input.

That is a bummer... why didn't they include at least one hdmi in...
Or at least they could've let people install kodi or plex.

So far I haven't had to power cycle the player in this way. I would like to be able to use the apps on the player, to take advantage of its superb video quality and of course the HDR Optimizer. Both Netflix and Amazon Prime look better on the 820 than they do on the apps native to the LG OLED 65C8 I have. I agree that the forced Dolby Vision on the 820's Netflix app is a pain and should be fixed, but I'd even be willing to switch that manually if the sync problem, which seems to have been introduced with the latest firmware release, got fixed.

I haven't seen a Firestick 4K in action. How does its video performance compare to the 820's? (I'm assuming it doesn't stutter and that the a/v sync is fine.)

I have the Sony 300ES, and set the player to SD/BT2020 which has the pj receiving BT.709

I'm using a new JVC X790 projector with my new 820. 4k and blue rays work great. Some DVDs work great also. However, I'm having trouble with at least one older set of DVDs. When I try any disc from my "Die Hard' trilogy, the display does not fill the screen properly. It stays true the the correct aspect ratio, but it is "shrunk down" such that I have black bars at the top and bottom.

I played these same DVDs on an older DVD player with this projector with NO ISSUE.

Is there some 820 setting I need to adjust?

thanks for any help on this.

My recently upgraded 20 year old basement theater: 7.1 ch setup with JVC x790r projector; 100" Stewart 16x9 screen, Panasonic 820 UHD player; Marantz AV7704 pre-pro; Marantz MM8077 7 ch Amp; PSA v1811 subwoofer; Atlantic Technology 20 year old speakers

As a followup to this, is there a way to tell the 820 to always convert HDR -> SDR? I haven't seen anything in the menus for this. May not be looking in the right place or missed it though.
