What would be better in TV type Reference or LCD TV with a Sony Z9D that is capable of 1600 nits?

I’d go with the reference setting.

I mentioned the "Pure Direct" situation in my review as well. You are likely not alone!

"I wish there was a memory-function for automatic switching to 'Pure Direct' whenever the player senses a CD or SACD. As it is now, you have to activate that manually each time and then turn it off before watching a movie since the function shuts off picture circuits. Bit annoying."

Good thing the remote has a direct-button for this. Still, Pioneer should address this in a firmware update (alongside total dimming of the blue illumination).

A nice summary. As someone with a 205 and considering a Panny 9000 or this Pioneer LX800 if either make it stateside, I am curious if anyone can fill Oppos shoes.

The Pioneer LX800 will make an interesting comparison to the Oppo 205. The Panasonic 9000 is not in the equation as far as competing with the 205 as it's not a universal player.

I don't mind losing the SACD or DVD-A functionality if the video performance is improved on a 2 piece projection system. I have other better disc spinners than the 205 for audio side of things. The LX800 sounds like a beast but it also appears the 205 may still have some tricks up its sleeve.

I hope the 9000 & LX800 both make it stateside.

Can any owners of the LX500 comment on the front panel display and OSD as far as whether it indicates "DSD" with SACD playback. Thanks !

The Panasonic 9000 will reportedly be available in the US in December. Not sure about the LX800 though.

I ordered the LX500, and was supposed to receive it the week after, but after waiting 3 weeks , nothing! So i call my Canadian seller, and they told me that Pioneer have limited supply, and they don't know when it will be available... Is there others in the same situation here?

They were apparently in limited supply at least online in the US and the places that had them didn’t have many and sold the ones they had relatively quickly. The couple places I checked now list them as Pre-orders or Special orders with availability in 7-21 days but who knows how accurate that timeframe is.

Does the screen saver work when playing CD/SACD? Unfortunately, for my Oppo BDP-93EU that is not the case.

No. That is one of the weird things Pioneer playes do when playing CD/SACD. Or in this case, they don’t. There’s no way to turn the screen off unless you toggle with the display or you go with the Pure Audio route.

Thanks! It's certainly not a show stopper for me, but that would be a nice little feature to have. I'll continue to have the TV of in this case when I upgrade next year.

The screensaver doesn't work because the elapsed time is counting down. The screensaver will work if there is no movement (CD/SACD paused). I just use the Pure Audio and totally mute my display. Much better than the distracting screensaver IMO.

not sure if this is best forum for my question, but I'm seriously considering the LX500 because i'm building a system with control4 integration. Neither the panny 820 or 9000 allow for control4 integration so here I am. Regarding SACD playback in the LX500, I'm assuming that the DAC downmixes the DSD to PCM and outputs it over the 2 channel, doesn't that in effect render the output quality to something not much better than CD? If thats the case then what advantage does playing SACD on this player have over just playing a regular CD. I've tried to read up on this but i'm hoping someone can drop some knowledge on me regarding this. Thanks.

The manual indicates that DSD is put out over HDMI. If your receiver does not decode SACD, it probably does what the Oppo does and defaults to 88/24 pcm, which is still way better than CD's 44/16 output. I couldn't find anything in the manual about 2 channel analog output, but the 4490eq dac from AKM is surely capable of decoding DSD, so I don't see any reason why it wouldn't directly decode DSD of the stereo layer of a SACD to two channel analog output. It does make a reference to down mixing the multi channel output to PCM, so you'd want to select the stereo layer for two channel analog output, if you want DSD direct conversion. There is a button on the front to switch between CD layer, stereo layer, and multi channel layer.

Some even claim some benefit for DSD to PCM conversion, Oppo players give you the option to select. Read Bob's informative blog post on the subject.

I ordered the 500 yesterday. I found an "open box"

Ive been a pioneer elite fan for decades. Glad they finally stepped up in the 4k blu ray player market. Hopefully it lives up to the hype.

Kind of ridiculous, this player has been announced for months and apparently is being made, yet there is basically no US inventory. Seems like very poor planning on Pioneer's part, given Christmas is right around the corner.

Kind of ridiculous, this player has been announced for months and apparently is being made, yet there is basically no US inventory. Seems like very poor planning on Pioneer's part, given Christmas is right around the corner.
I have had somewhat the same observation, the UDP-LX500 seems pretty difficult to chase down at the moment. I wonder if it is some byproduct of the Pioneer/Onkyo/TCL deals, but it does seem like in the USA at least, high-end UHD players are a bit scarce, cannot find much inventory of Panasonic or others, either. Maybe there is more demand than expected for higher end with Oppo out of the market. Or maybe people are just streaming everything. Hard to tell.

I do have a couple of questions for those that own a UDP-LX500, since these are so hard to chase down at retail:
  1. How quiet is the unit when playing 4k discs?
  2. Can you run the ethernet off of a Mesh network (Wifi with ethernet out on the box)

I have a Pioneer DVD player kicking around the house somewhere, it was pretty solid and quiet, though mostly we use an Oppo for Blu-Ray, I would buy another one of those for UHD if I could, but it looks like Pioneer might for now have one of the better players in that segment. I see tons of Sony, LG, and Samsung players, but mostly on the low end.
