Thanks for the update.

My link still works ... UDP-LX500

But you can't get to it from the menus on that site.

It shows on another site ... blu-ray-disc

Yep, type UDP-LX500 into Google and you can get right to the players website.

That’s not the current website. Now it opens a new webpage and you have to search for the model number. Just to find out it says out of stock. Pioneer never did this with their current models. Looks like it went out of production.

Pioneer UDP-LX 500 / 800 Owners Thread (No Price Talk)

Music Direct website now states the following:

Availability: Product is no longer available.
This product is no longer available for purchase.

This could simply mean its no longer available to purchase from them but still a little ominous

After lots of research and deciding to pull the trigger (huge purchase for my meager equipment budget) I was shocked last week that no one wanted to take my $1,000. I got scared about it becoming extinct and found one used on eBay - big pucker factor. Happy to say I got it last night and it absolutely nailed every challenging section of UHD discs I've kept notes on. Stuff that paralyzed my LG and Sony players had no glitches. I think I got lucky with a good unit and this is going to last me (and will have to) for the rest of my life. I watch about 300 discs a year.

I would say get one any way you can. The future is really looking grim and we have to just hunker down.

I’m conflicted between this and the Panasonic UB 9000. I want region free playback for blu-ray, I know you can buy the Pioneer from certain sites region free. I’m only concerned about the lack of the HDR 10+ update (I have a Samsung Q80R 65”). Should I bite the bullet and get the Pioneer while I still can? This has been a battle for weeks!

My biggest concern if discontinued would be future support (updates, etc). More than hdr10+. This is a beautiful piece of hardware and works beautifully.

The reason I picked this over the Panasonic, literally the only one, is that the Panasonic has a sleep mode you can't disable. This throws me into fits of rage because you come back from walking the dog or whatever to a full disc reboot - previews and all.

I contacted Pioneer this morning. This is the response I got:

Quote:
The blu ray player is being manufactured, we have not been given an ETA of when it would be available.
So it's hopeful. Last year when they ran out of inventory and I inquired, they were a bit more forthcoming with info stating that players were held up in customs and an estimate as when the batch would clear customs. All must not be totally bleak with pio/onkyo crutchfield just posted a new stereo reciever from Onkyo the TX-8390 with a TBD for being available.

I reached out to Pioneer last night replying to a previous reply from them regarding firmware updates and just received this:

The UDP-LX500 has not been discontinued as of now. The HDR10+ update is still planned to be released (as per Japan) but as of today we do not have a release date when this firmware will be released.

After a ton of research, I too pulled the trigger on this player and have been very pleased, not to mentioned impressed. Just this morning I noticed if you are willing to consider an open box, WorldWideStereo has a buy-it-now listing for one on ebay at this time. Just search LX500. Since they are an authorized Pioneer reseller selling as open box, not sure what Pioneer warranty exists.

Music on CDs are stored in PCM. So transfering it to the stereo/avr digitally is always
done in PCM.

How you like to listen to your music is up to you. I prefer to listen to any source without
any kind of upmixing or sound mode. Usually direct or pure direct for music.
I have a friend that always listen to music with multi channel stereo mode.

Quick setting - Bitstream vs. PCM

Since the remote has a dedicated button for cycling between the HDMI settings I started thinking.

Has any one had success applying alternative settings for:
  • "Single" set for Bitstream (e.g. movies)
  • "Pure Audio" set for PCM (e.g. SACD) to allow Processor base management with multi-channel source.

Right now, I'm clicking through a multi-step process of "Stop" x 2 > "Home Menu" > "HDMI" > "HDMI Audio Out" > "Bitstream" or "PCM" > "Return" ; then "Play"

Well, I’m surprised LX500 has the pure audio mode from sub hdmi. I thought that was a
unique LX800 feature.
But I have used all three successfully. Single with bitstream for movies to get atmos/dts:x.
Separate I’m not using but I have tested it. Pure audio I use for CD/SACD transport to my prepro.
Although all with bitstream setting on.

CD playback will make no difference because it will be PCM sent either way.
SACD should send 2.0/5.1 PCM depending on disc and audio track chosen with PCM
set for HDMI audio out.

Do you have an issue with this? I have to test this later when I get home.

I had a question for current owners of this player. When playing mkv files of 4K movies from a disc does the player output the Dolby Atmos/DTS X/ DTS HD Master Audio to the connected receiver/processor? The Panasonic UB9000 will not output uncompressed audio like DST HD Master Audio when reading off a mkv file from a Hard Drive.

HSamwel - Thanks for taking a look at this.

I do not currently have my player wired up to make use of the 2nd HDMI out. It would be helpful to know if others have already adopted this use case successfully.

Aside from the fact that Pioneer has withheld the LX800 from the US market, I found this file helpful in deciphering what features and components differentiate the two models: https://www.pioneer-audiovisual.eu/s...layer_2018.pdf

Thanks for the link. I think I have seen this guide before a while back.
Seems a little more stability (weight) and a more advanced analog stage is what
I got for +$1000 extra :-) No real extra features.

I did test LX800 with a SACD disc.
With hdmi output set to bitstream I get DSD direct transport to my prepro on either
single or pure audio mode.
If I set hdmi output to pcm I get 88.2khz 24bit PCM output on both single and
pure audio mode, as well as PCM 5.1 88.2khz 24bit in multi channel SACD.
So the player works as expected.

O2slowride,

I reread your post again. I think I read it to quickly, missing the actual question.

No, you can’t have the player remember different settings for each mode.
Setting bitstream, pcm or reencode for hdmi audio output is global.
I’m sorry, you’ll have to keep going into the home menu settings to change
this back and forth between movies and SACD’s..

Thanks again HSamwel for checking into this and sharing your findings.

The effort to switch between Bitstream and PCM is a small nit to an otherwise solid UDP. My only other gripe to Pioneer would be to see the LX800 here in the US, so I'll just have to suffer for now .

I am very eager to see Pioneer resume their supply chain for this product as all retailers I check are reporting a March restocking date. BTW - there was another refurbished unit on ebay this morning, this one listing from Pioneer themselves. It now shows to have been sold. If anyone is serious about trying to get your hands on one, you should check ebay often, as I have seen open-box and refurbished units showing up occasionally during the past month. They don't typically last long.

Does the LX 500 have a DSD/PCM SACD audio output option choice in the menu?

Bill

My SACD collection and HRAudio.net Library, getting larger as my wallet gets smaller ;-).

Emotiva XMC-1, Wyred 4 Sound STP-SE (preamp), SX-500s, ST-500, ST-250, Marantz SA-10, Oppo UDP-205, UDP-203, BDP-105, BDP-103, BDP-93, BDP-83, Panasonic TC-P60GT50, Panamax 5100EX, Salk HT2-TLs, Salk 1801b center, Salk 1801TL (surrounds) and two Rythmik F12SEs.

Yes and no Bill.

To make the change in the main menu, it has to be when no disc is being read (e.g. not paused or book-marked.) You have to press stop twice on the remote to access the "HDMI Audio" setting on the menu. The setting selected applies to all data transmitted through the HDMI connection regardless of disc type. So unlike the Oppo setup menu, which does allow you to retain a different "Bitsteam" (DSD) vs. "PCM" for a DVD/Blu-ray/UHD disc vs. a SACD.

With this use case in mind, my query earlier this week (that HSamwel tested) was if the player would retain different "HDMI Audio" settings between the different HDMI modes of "Single" when you send all data (video & audio) through the primary HDMI output vs. "Pure Audio", which only passes audio signal through the second HDMI output. It would seem like a very possible software enhancement in a future firmware release and a very logical one considering that Pioneer took the trouble of making an easily accessible remote button "HDMI" for on-the-fly HDMI mode switching.

Thank you for that information! The lack of a DSD/PCM quick access menu option would be an issue for me. As you mentioned Oppo players have a DSD/PCM setting option which I use quite often with my 205. I leave it set for DSD when playing stereo SACDs then when playing multi-channel SACDs switch it to PCM. The reason for that is so that I can use Dirac room correction when playing multi-channel SACDs. I use a Wyred 4 Sound STP-SE for stereo SACD playback.

Anyone looking for an LX 500 should give their local Magnolia store a call. I called the Magnolia store in my area and they had one LX 500 on display and one in stock.

This must simply be a missing setup option forgotten by the development team.
They do have an option for DVD-Audio setting the hi-res or Dolby Digital version
of the audio. Having a separate option for DSD/SACD bitstream/PCM should be in
the player.

Can someone mail Pioneer support about this issue. In europe we do not talk to
Pioneer directly (Agipa), thus pretty unlikely any such requests going back to Pioneer.

I've been keeping an eye on this thread for a while but didn't have a Dolby Vision capable TV at the time. Long story short, my LG 9600 OLED is being replaced by Best Buy for full store credit of the original purchase cost - brand new TV coming in!

That means I am obviously in the market for a DV capable player (using the Sony X800 - not the MkII - at the moment) and since I have over 100 SACDs and DVD-As, I would prefer a universal player like the LX500.

Cue to the latest rumblings about Pioneer's cancelled acquisition and the delay of the HDR10+ update and the fact that the player (or any video disc player) is no longer listed on the US and Canada sites and you can imagine my hesitation to take the plunge on a $1300 (here in Canada) player.
With that being said, I called my go-to audio dealer in Toronto who carries Pioneer and asked them if he could still get the player and what his read on the situation is. Well, here's what I was just told:

It seems that the previous Pioneer sales rep my guy used to deal with is gone and no replacement has ever come forward. So he made some phone calls and pretty much told me that Pioneer appears to be winding things down in North America after the Sound United deal fell through and that the player has been discontinued. Not sure if that means the video disc side of their offerings or a larger chunk but at least other categories have new products listed...
He used to have one player that he sold to another Canadian dealer two months ago to cover one of their customers.

I am not saying this is gospel and might be different between Canada and the US, but from the feedback I got, things are certainly not looking good and I'd be very hesitant to buy a player (whether from a dealer or open box on ebay) where future support in terms of firmware and warranty repairs is less than certain.
We've all seen and heard enough about certain discs not playing to know that ongoing firmware support is key.

All that being said, I will reach to to Pioneer directly as well and see if they can confirm or deny what my dealer told me about the LX500 being discontinued (for Canada at least).

Guess I might have to start looking into the Panasonic UB9000 and get used to the idea of a two box solution for video and SACD/DVD-A playback - *sigh*
