That was exactly my point...

By the way, Ferraris will never cost 500 Euros more than a Toyota... or they will lose they status and appeal... their real value is not 300K of course, but wealthy people will always buy them as a status symbol... even if they can't run at 200MPH on a Turnpike!

Same as the UB9000... they are luxury goods... you don't buy them for their real value, but for the perceived value... and to impress other people...

Sorry, but I didn't buy my UB9000 to impress other people. I think you are generalizing way too much here. I bought it for the added tone mapping setting(s) for my projector and because I was giving my UB820 to my Son with the JVC x750 that I was giving him.
MOberhardt and Panson like this.

1) JVC DLA-NX7 & Sony 65Z9D, Yamaha CX-A5200, Outlaw Audio 7900 & 7700, UDP-203, DP-UB9000, UBP-X800M2, Roku Ultra
2) Sony 75Z9D, Yamaha RX-A3080, 2xOutlaw Audio 2200s, UDP-203, UBP-X800M2, Roku Ultra
3) Sony 75X940E, Yamaha RX-A2080, UDP-203, UBP-X800M2, Roku Ultra

How do you guys find DV is with the 9000? Compared to the 203 I saw a review that the Panny clips bright scenes in DV.

Similarly, I bought the UB9000 predecessor UB900 for its additional capabilities. In my case, it was 2CH analog out, and network services (N, APV, YT). I reasoned that I could still have a useful machine, if it stopped reading video discs. And that`s exactly what happened--stopped reading 4K UHD and Blu-ray discs. Upscaling DVD is still excellent, as are the aforementioned capabilities.

Reading various 4K UHD player threads at this forum, it`s not unusual for people to have two players in their set-up doing various things.

Yeah, I have three in my main system, for different reasons.

1) JVC DLA-NX7 & Sony 65Z9D, Yamaha CX-A5200, Outlaw Audio 7900 & 7700, UDP-203, DP-UB9000, UBP-X800M2, Roku Ultra

Me neither, no one use my home theatre excluding myself ... but I know people that did purchase it for that reason...

By the way I really hate the build quality of the UB820... and the couple more tone mapping settings are useful, even considering that in particular situations they introduce really bad banding...

Audio is not a concern for me because I use the NAIM chain for high-res audio streaming...

Hard to see any DV difference between the UB9000, OPPO203 and LX500 on my OLEDs...

But I guess that if you try hard enough you will find what you are looking for... minute differences... very minute... almost unnoticeable...

No doubt there are, but most of them are probably over in the threads discussing $1000/ft power cords.

I wasn't impressed with the build quality of the UB820 either, but I was happy with its performance.

Analog audio also wasn't a priority or concern for me either. Most of my audio listening in from my minidlna server. I ripped all of my CDs to flac several years ago and most of my new music these days comes in the form of high-res flac and dsd from hdtracks, acousticaudio, and nativeDSD. I still purchase CDs but immediately rip them to flac on my server.

Here's the review I was referencing. Vincent starts talking about DV at about the 11:40 mark. Just trying to decide if this is the player to replace my 203. Unlike most here, I buck the multiple player trend and I'm a one player kinda guy. Well, I do still have an HD-DVD player in my cabinet. Maybe one day I'll replace it, or not. Lol.

Well, I don't know when I will be willing to part with my 203s. Universal players are getting scarcer than hens teeth!

And often differences are much less visible that reviewers suggest... if you need eagle eyes of an eagle to see them without knowing they are there...

Of course if someone tell you that the problem is there you will start to see it... it is how human brain works...

But for any practical purposes differences in DV playback are sub-minimal...

The banding that the Panny "HDR Optimizer" introduces in Jurassic World with my PJ irritates me much more...

Let's hope for you it will show up... lately has been an issue getting them even in Europe...

By the way I got a strange issue with some old BDs stored away for some years... I got bad freezes and video artifacts... it is not the player; I got four of them of different brands with updated fw...

Surfaces looks clean and no scratches at all... I cleaned them with water and soap to no joy...

Any suggestion?

That is quite worrying... I'm a collector and I got around 9000 discs of various type and age stored away and catalogued...

I Know that old HDVDs from WB got issues over time... but my affected discs are old BDs from different studios...

Only a couple. In a couple of cases I ended up ripping the disc as PC drive could read it ok. Oddly, the first two Pirates of the Caribbean Blu rays were 100% dead and not even readable on anything. They are so cheap now I just bought them again.

For stuff out of print I'd recommend backing it up. I had to convert a hddvd to Blu Ray, as it is the only way I can get that movie in HD at all, which is annoying as I can't do full copy with menus etc. I wish I could.

Ripping is not an option for me... I repurchased the affected discs... but is quite worrying considering the dimension of my collection...

Yeah, to be honest if you don't have the hardware and software, and even if you do, it is definitely cheaper to rebuy than rip... I only do stuff like that as it is a hobby, enhancing titles I own, either adding subtitles or audio tracks (typically all the 3d Blu Rays I own where the UHD or blu Ray I also own has a better audio track, I'll add that to my 3d. And even in one rare case (Kairo / Pulse}, the DVD has 5.1clossy, but the Blu Rays only have 2.0... And to add insult to injury, I had to rebuy the DVD as I couldn't find my DVD by the time the Blu Ray was released...

Seriously, I hate piracy with a passion, but it they just worried about targeting online garbage, not hardware, if be ok. They are not losing sales with me, more gaining if anything with dual purchases, UHD and 3d Blu Ray, not to mention hardware and software.

Is it the same price as Value Electronics? It is not in their system, so you must have called them or gone to the store.

Value Electronics apparently still has stock from the April allotment as website is showing the 9000 as In Stock

Thank you. I would buy it from Best Buy so I could also purchase their warranty. They have a four warranty for the 820 and I assume they have something similar at a higher price. BTW, I sent Value Electronics an email a month ago about another product and they never responded.

Looking to pick up a UB9000 and was wondering how owners are liking it? Any issues or concerns? Any noise from the player during disc playback? I heard the built in apps are not great which I don’t mind as it will strictly be used for discs. Hope to hear from as many owners as possible. Thanks in advance.

I love it. Especially for projector use.

Aside from the tone mapping, reliability, quietness, speed starting, I can't live without the subtitle shift and luminance options it has. I hate having to use my oppo for region A now... It is very tricky figuring how to get the front display to turn off (two stage with the Hi Clarity Audio settings, once in setup, then in first playback)

Is a great player (especially for PJ users) with two warnings:
1) In Europe there as been issues on the driver mechanics, some of the players got issues on reading DVDs. Also some players are very noisy and slow to start... others have issues in reading discs... the issues are present in a very limited number of players so far... My infos are directly from an Italian High-End distribution chain, shops that sell only high end A/V equip.
My player some times got issues in reading some discs, I got to take out the disc and re-insert it to make it work...
My Pio LX500 looks more reliable on the mechanical side...
2) The Panny HDR Optimizer is great... solves many issues encountered with HDR pjs.
But keep in mind that there is a side effect... with specific Movie/PJ combinations it introduces very bad banding that is not cables related (and disappear disabling the Optimizer)...

Excluding this two marginal issues is the best player on the market.

Pioneer UDP-LX500 - Oppo 203EU - Panasonic DP-UB9000 - SONY X-800 UHD BLU-RAY -Apple TV 4K - Marantz SR6013 in 5:1:2 Dolby ATMOS/DTS:X Config - KLIPSH REFERENCE (Towers + Central + 2 surrounds + 2 Atmos Enabled) - KLIPSH R-120SW SUBWOOFER- LG OLED 65C8 - LG OLED 55B7 - OPTOMA UHD60 4K/HDR Projector on 110' SCREEN- Toshiba HD-EP30 HDDVD PLAYER - NAIM ND5 XS 2 streamer - NAIM NAIT XS 2 stereo amplifier - Roon Core on the network

Can your pioneer shift subtitles? Or drop luminance? Just asking as I asked on the pioneer thread and no one would answer me.

Drop luminance no... but there is a "projector mode" that implement a form of tone mapping... but not as evolved as the Panny "HDR Optimizer"...

About subtitles shift I don't think so... but I'm not completely sure because I don't use subtitles... I watch movies in English and italian language but with no subtitles I think they compromise the experience...

What about the movies that have certain scenes that don't speak English or Italian eg Orcs in the Hobbit movies, Letters fro Iwo Jima where they speak Japanese etc, if your using Scope Subtitle shift is definitely necessary. Unless your fluent with Orc, Klingon and many other languages then I guess your all set

For me, having subtitles on is a MAJOR distraction and significantly detracts from the experience for me. If they only appeared when something was said in Orcish it would be ok, I suppose.

That's a point... by the way I hate the Hobbit saga and I speak fluent Klingon...

Just kidding.. I got your point but is not very impacting, is limited to few movies... 99.99% of discs gotta an English soundtrack... spoken...
