Yes, and interchangeable between player-controllers, easier with basically only Sony and Panasonic left (not counting Philips, but they can join the fun if they want to ).

The carousel mechanism shouldn't be more than $400-$500 in retail cost, plus the optical disc reader inside it at no more than $100 retail

Could use a VPN protocol over Gigbit ethernet for the carousel<>player/controller secure link, with 512 or 1024 bit keys (whatever strength they think they need to make it work)

ATA over Ethernet (AoE) could make the carousel "look" like a SATA optical drive to the controller/player over stock Cat6-
