I'm very interested if you can discern any difference in picture quality. I want to also know if it makes any difference to be able to lower the nits down to 350 for the 9000 so the Panasonic can do the tone mapping. The Panasonic 420 and the 820 can only take the nits down to 500

Excited to pick up the UB420 that is sitting at best buy tomorrow.

I had both an 820 and oppo 203 when ChadB calibrated my RS600. He did such a good job that I couldn't justify keeping the 820 since the oppo plays mkvs with full hi def audio and the Panasonic does not. I returned the 820 and decided to wait for the next iteration of uhd bluray player to come out.

At $250 with the same video abilities as the 820 and 9000 I am going to give the Panasonic another go in my theater.

If any user would be so kind as to briefly go over settings to use (optimizer on or off - HDR/SDR low calibration - SDR2020 calibration etc.) I would appreciate a quick primer. The search function on AVS isn't the greatest IMO.

Chad B calibrated JVC RS600, 112" 2.35 DaLite 2.8 High Power Screen (395 calibrated nits baby!!), 7.5.4 Marantz AV7702,Yamaha RX-A3050, Yamaha RX-Z9, Aerial Acoustics Model 6, Model 5, CC3, Def Tech UIWBP/A, 4-15" Infinite Baffle Sub + 15" Velodyne Sub Near-field, OPPO 203, Panasonic UC420, Geek Pulse DAC, NVidia Shield

Anyone confirm how the Amazon and Netlix app work on the 420? When I had the 820 for a brief time, the Amazon app had issues.

Nevermind, I see Amazon is dropping the Panny players, no biggie.

It's streamer roulette. To get Atmos on Netflix, one needs an Apple 4K or a new Panasonic BR player(among others like X-Box). To get the best playback on Amazon, one needs a Fire Device. To get more than stereo on Hulu, one needs an Apple 4K. Putting the 420 in my PJ rack means that I can get Netflix Atmos without an Apple 4K--but I kept the Fire device. Don't seem to miss using Hulu on the PJ--confined to the 82" Sammy Q90 in the living room, where I have the ATV4K, and Fire. I've had to add/rotate streamers among my three displays based on use and device capability as things have changed.

Yep, it is a PITA.

I'll have the 420 which can cover Blu-ray, Netflix with Atmos, and then use the ATV for NAS file playback, Amazon and PS Vue.

Setup was easy, looks just like any other recent Panny in the menu, minus a DV setting of the new models. Great price for the other features like HDR OPtimizer.

Has anyone done a comparison between HDR10 using Panasonic's HDR optimizer tech vs Dolby Vision?

I've been disappointed with Dolby Vision. It has had too many technical issues. Raised blacks over HDMI is the big one. Also according to Vincent Teoh's review of the Panny 9000, Panasonic's Dolby Vision implementation is too bright. I wonder if you can get better results just playing the HDR10 layer and letting the optimizer work its magic.

That's for multiple players, including the UB9000 and the 820. And yes they do support DV, not the 420.

Im not a fan of it either on Sonys, so I think the HDR Optimizer set on OLED is a great option. Watched Gremlins 4K last night, looked great.

Does UB420 have any playback issues? Is it noisy while playing a movie (disc spinning and fan noise)?

I have the 820 which has the same chassis. No louder than any other bluray player I have owned except for my Oppo players through the years. But you paid quite a premium for that metal tank chassis to minimize any sound, instead of plastic like most players.

Video and audio performance wise, the 420 and 820 slightly outperformed my Oppo 203. That is why I sold the 203. For the build quality of the Oppo you would have to step up to the Panasonic 9000. Haven't seen one in person but I would hope for the premium they are charging their would be a noticeable improvement in audio and video performance.

The specs for all three on the video side are almost identical except for Dolby Vision missing on the 420. The 9000 has more support for audiophiles: stereo balanced and unbalanced outputs, higher sampling DAC, and an additional digital audio output in the form of coaxial.

I just ordered the UB420 at Best Buy with a few 4k discs. I'll pick them up tonight. I was considering in getting the Sony X800M2, but what drew me away from it is that it still has the freezing issues that plagued the previous X series line up. Since my tv does not support Dolby Vision, the UB420 is the best way to go.

I picked up the ub420 at bestbuy last friday and used it quite a bit over the weekend. Overall it works great. I have a jvc rs1000 pj so I don't need dolby vision. I couldn't see any other reason to pay more for the 820, but maybe I missed something. The hdr optimizer seems to work very well. I had been using an xbox one x, which admittedly has weird colorspace issues, but it required tweaking whites and blacks it seemed on every video. With the 420, it is the other way around, every video seems to just look perfect.

The only noise I heard from the unit was on startup of a disk and it seems like most players do this.

One thing that didn't work for me very well is the media player. If I play via dlna the video looks very good both 4k and upscaled, but the audio is very quiet. What's weird is one video was good friday night but on sunday it was quiet. So something changed. I chatted with panasonic support and they told me how to do a factory reset. I'm not optimistic but I'll try it because the guy seemed confident this would fix it. I did change 4 or 5 settings so maybe one of them is related. I never enable dynamic audio ranging. Of course I can play stored media 10 different ways, but the 420 seems to do a super job on the video upscaling so it would be nice to straighten out the audio.

Sdr bt2020

Can the UB420 do SDR with BT2020, as the UB820 does ? This is a very important feature to me, so will be a decision point between the two players.

Thank you all !

Page 21 of the 420 manual . The 420 supports High Dynamic Range Conversion. Does your display not support HDR or do you prefer watching 4K content in SDR due to the poor HDR performance of your display?

Thanks for the reply - I have a JVC RS540 projector and would like to set up the player as HDR->SDR while keeping BT2020 as the colorspace. I have read the UB820 can do it, but could not confirm the UB420 can also do it.

I believe the Netflix app will fallback to BT709 with the SDR approach. Amazon Video is OK.

Panasonic DP-UB420 4K HDR10+ (non-Dolby Vision) Blu-ray Player now available..

Anyone have any issues getting Netflix or amazon to activate HDR? I put in a disc and HDR was activated just fine.

Update: reset to factory defaults and everything seems to be working now.

Any news?
