Sony also revealed that the stock ratio between the 60GB version and 20 version will be around 80:20. More 60GB versions are to be expected, especially after the launch of the box 360 saw more demand for the Premium version than Core.

They should have made it closer to 90:10, or possibly not offering a 20GB version as well, although the 20GB version probably makes them more money.

I'm guessing you are right. $100 more buys quite a lot: Wifi ($100 extra on the xbox360), 40GB more HDD (20GB is $100 MSRP on the xbox360), HDMI 1.3 capabilities, etc. Unless the margin is just less, but still more profitable per unit.

Wonder if it means that out of 400K launch units in NAmerica, 320K will be the US$599 version? Or is this an overall 4-month ratio until March 2007?

The original source is "unidentified" according to
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6157399.html

It is interesting that Sony would do that considering the 1.3 HDMI chip isn't supposed to be available until October. It seems to be a potential wildcard in the availability equation. The maximum number of PS3s Sony can produce is less-than-or-equal-to the number of the scarcest component. If the HDMI chip runs into production/yield problems, I wonder if Sony can easily switch to producing more $499 units?

You make it sound more ominous than the text does.

It's not as if it came from a janitor at the PS3 plant. :D

Thanks fuad, saved me the time of reading the article to get the actual context

did everyone read the whole article as posted. It said that sony expected to have 800K units by the end of the year.

Except that when they announced the delay in shipping to Europe they said 500K units for Japan and USA combined on launch day, and they still projected 2 million units by the end of the year.

Now, they have just reduced that by 1.2 million units. This is not looking good folks.

I'm kinda under the impression the 80/20 ratio may be the chances Sony is able to meet their 400k debut in N. America. 80% says they won't.
Considering the possible hardware issues (cell, blu diode, HDMI 1.3, etc...), I wouldn't be surprised if Sony either postpones the PS3 debut a few more weeks, or the numbers drop once again at debut.

They've stockpiled the Cell chips. The blue diodes is the main worry. The HDMI 1.3 is up to Silicon Images to churn up quickly and FedEx across the world.

This is very JIT manufacturing - Just In Time.

We dont know who said it, coffee boy not excluded. Not that it matters. This statement has no context. 80:20 for the launch? for the whole year? What?

If one of the members of Sony's Playstation Management happens to have the nickname "coffee boy" please let us know :p

Remember that it has been widely reported that Sony will be selling the PS3 consoles at a loss for at least the first year to 18 months. The 60GB version will probably result in a little less loss per unit since the parts and labor costs would probably be somewhat less than the $100 delta above the cost to manufacture the basic version (distribution costs should be the same for both units).

Honestly, I would have thought that the ratio would be opposite for launch, given that they won't start making the HDMI connector until October. Maybe early next year they could have that ratio, but I will be interested in seeing how many they can crank out for November.

As everyday passes, I get more suspicious that they will miss this launch date.
