So given the issues that I've outlined regarding the flow of information out of SCE, what do you think needs to change?

"There is a cultural thing about our approach in Japan that has to change. Our approach in Japan is, "Once it's perfect, we'll share it with everybody else." Whereas I think in order to engender trust in our users, we have to share some things that might be not quite perfect, but are ready to give you an indication of what's coming. So we could say, "You know, we're not sure when it's coming, but we're going to have DVD upscaling on Playstation 3." There you go. There's a scoop for you. In my view, we should have a slide on a Web site, or a blog. We should have [Playstation head of platform development Izumi] Kawanishi blog his road map for the Xross Media Bar for Playstation 3. I think he would probably have the biggest blog after yours in the world."

Glad to see him mention it.

If he doesn't know when it's coming, though, March may be iffy.

I didn't read the entire article, but from that quote, it sounds like a hypothetical.

I think it's actually pretty clear from the quote that it's not just hypothetical. Why would he describe it as a scoop if it's being used purely as an example?

Upscaling was already confirmed in an interview with Kawanishi (I think it was him) back in December about the media playback in the PS3 and what they had planned (it was on PC Watch).

When it's coming is the only thing up in the air -- it may not be March (like many of us thought), but it will be sometime in the coming months.

Regardless, it's good to hear it mentioned again and likely a higher priority update (as it was mentioned over other things).

It's just a matter of time. This has never really been super high priority for me, though.

Sorry, I don't believe 1 single word that comes out of Phil Harrison's mouth.

How do you like your 2 HDMI outputs and your BUILT IN ROUTER? Oh yeah....

Don't go format neutral. Your wallet will thank you.

Upscaling is HDMI only, right? Or does it work over Component as well?

That was before the PS3 launched which was almost 6-12 months before the launch date. Once SCE know that they can't possibly make that and still subsidize the console, they had to cut some features off. At the current price, the PS3 is still a bargain. If it had 2 HDMI outputs and a built-in router, that would make it a huge bargain.

Still we are talking about DVD upscaling here. It's not that hard to do with the PS3 build NOW. They just have to upgrade the software. Already VOBs ripped from DVDs and renamed as MPG plays at 1080p (if your display set to it and is capable).

Same here. Upscaling from a good DVD player may help, upscaling from a not so good DVD player, well.......I don't know, maybe it will be great.

Stephen.

Chances are very good that I was drinking when I posted the above.
