Since I bought 13, I'm lamenting and surprised by the lack of a nice upmixing 9.2.4 AVR on the market. There's nothing out there without going to big money items like Trinnov -- and that's really out of the question for me.
Hey Archaea
I am still loving the Mackies.... so much so that I have not done the atmos upgrade yet..... to busy watching movies
Just got caught up on your thread, 9.8.4..... wowzers.
Why 9?....there have been some days I have debated going back down to 5

One day I will start the new theater....... one day..... THAT DAY HAS ARRIVED

5.1! - turn in your enthusiast badge.

Why 9.x.4?

I like symmetry?

It sort of seems like the perfect layout for a single row doesn't it? At least until we get speakers firing from the floor.

But what I'm learning and verifying over the last couple days is that there is no solid implementation of 9.2.4 at this time from an AVR I can afford (Mainstream 13 channel AVRs). Front Wides are ONLY legitimately used by Dolby Atmos objects. No upmixing from older DTS or Dolby Digital, no DTS-X, not even with upmixed music through Dolby Surround or DTS Neural X.

So the reality is - until that changes, and wides are at least upmixed to from older sources or music --- I'm probably not willing to drop > $3k for the AVR to do it, and hold onto another $1k in speakers.

$4k for some Atmos objects from Front Wide speakers is a horse pill indeed.

Just find that I don't really hear the back 2.... probably a setup issue.

Oh I hear ya, symmetry is where its at but like you allude to.... at what cost?
I also wonder to what noticeable amount of benefit.... personally I have only ever heard up to 7 there very well could be marked improvement... I just don't know if the juice is worth the squeeze.

Atmospheric audio is a worthwhile improvement. (ceiling speakers with Atmos or DTS-X) Maybe a cheaper 5.2.2 AVR option is perfectly fine in your case. 4 is a hair better - but you can get nearly all the way there with two ceiling speakers -- I've played back and forth with it several times.

Oh for sure... sorry miss spoke earlier.... I've heard 7.6.4. TOTALLY agree atmos is worth it (well with a well implemented movie lol)
My original plan is to go .4 atmos but with the current AVR (Marantz 7010) I can only juice 9 in total, so an additional amp is needed.
Fattykidd has been talking to me about the anthem he just got.... 11 powered channels.... he is really liking it.
I'm tempted just on a cost of amp and AVR vs. one AVR but thats just my thriftiness kicking in

Not trying to come across confrontational or argumentative.... just conversational
would the jump from 7 to 9 be that much better?
In the past that question was about 5 to 7.... my how times change lol
Personally (as you know I'm not an audiophile) I find my front stage to be pretty full and if there were 2 speakers added between the sides and front.... I'm not sure I would notice. I might... never tried.
But then its "duplicated" audio from the sides anyways... not a dedicated track by the sound guys.

"spec" wise are the JBL you got looking pretty good?

It's finally the start to a long awaited upgrade to the theater......ATMOS

Four Volt 8's with atmos flat packs just ready to be built.

Couple big decisions on this though
1) Use these 8's for surround duty and move 6's to atmos
2) what amp to get to power the fronts so that the Marantz can power atmos

Any thoughts or recommendations always welcome

Thanks @Helheim for the Volt 8's, good luck on the theater build

Pretty excited with the upcoming changes......
Think I am going to empty most of the gear out of the rack and re work.
Must say I love the rack and the total access behind it!!!!

Not sure why I struggle so much with how to organize it.

Oh I got an Anthem 1120..... pretty stoked about it..... future post to come

Ran into this and thought I would paste it in my thread also

What I am trying to get is the video and audio to the TV (on board speakers) without audio to the theater speakers
At the moment I was able to do it with the Standby HDMI Bypass enabled to Last Input but that seams very kludgy and the harmony remote won't let me program an off command in the start up sequence.
I also need to be able to change the input to 1, 2 or 3 as needed
Update to my previous post.....
Anthems wonderful technical support responded to me and provided the following explanation...... hope it helps some one else.

"With our current MRX x20 and AVM 60 models the audio is only sent out via the HDMI outputs when the main zone is off and you’ve enabled Standby HDMI bypass in the general configuration menu.So if the main zone is turned on, then it will stop sending the audio out both the HDMI output 1 & 2."

"The zone 2 is limited to just audio, the unit does not support separate video for Zone 2. You could run separate audio the the second display via the RCA preouts of the MRX 1120 itself, this would send 2 channel content to that location."

To get it working for my use I have created a harmony remote sequence that turns on the main, sets it to the input I want, turns on the input device, then turns the main off.
Thanks to friends wisdom I tricked the harmony by "fixing" a unused command to be the off command, I used the number 9. This got an off signal in the start sequence that harmony does not normally have available.
There is a lot of clicking and on/off going on but it gets me where I need to be till a better solution presents itself.... maybe speakers for the TV.... new project lol

Hope that makes sense.

My mini review and thoughts

As posted above I got 4 Volt 8's from a local guy. Finally got them built but...
I was faced with a decision on get an amplifier for the Marantz 7010 or upgrading the receiver.
Fortunately my buddy Fattykidd made me a proposition on his Anthem MRX1120 I couldn't refuse.... well I could have but it was a good deal LOL. It gets me the 11 channels of amp that I need and is held in high regard by people I trust and respect.

The sound from the Anthem is different than the marantz. I'm no expert at all so bear with me on the description as it is my opinion. Were the Marantz was a warm sound the Anthem is more direct...... pure.... realistic. I really notice this in gunshots and glass breaking. Right away I was really enjoying the sound that the unit produces and was amazed that I actually could note a difference from the Marantz. Volume out of the gate surprised me also as its 10db hotter that I was use to but thats anthem from what I hear.

Atmos..... I heard it in a home atmosphere a couple years ago and loved it. I also was knew it was to be a future upgrade in my system and that day finally came. Of course I had to fire up a couple demos before I calibrated and then watched Jupiter Ascending. Something about the audio in that movie I love.... or maybe it Mila lol. All I can really say is WOW. The inmersion that it adds is wild. I probably ruffled some feathers when I said I wasn't to sure about 7 channels vs 5 but with .4 there's no dispute. I kept finding myself saying "this is some next level sh*t"

I who ever still follows, I hope you enjoy. Feedback is always welcome.
Hope to post some installation pictures soon...ish

Thanks for following along.

Some Installation Pictures

Anthem MRX1120 in all her glory

The Rack

Equipment from top to bottom
  1. Unraid Server: 33TB capacity at 67% full, Plex and pihole docker
  2. pfsense router, just new and still playing
  3. Computer Monitor 22", fit perfect.... not sure if it will stay
  4. Behind Monitor: Odroid C2 with Openpht embedded,
  5. Behind Monitor:Emotiva sub trigger switch
  6. Anthem MRX 1120
  7. PS3, hardly ever use it
  8. Satellite Receiver, hope to go OTA soon
  9. Nuke #1: Front subs
  10. Nuke #2: Nearfield
  11. Computer, nothing special just for surfing of manuals, REW and ARC
  12. Harmony Hub for Companion remote

Hoping to get a rack mount UPS soon

One thing that annoys me is the little boxes like the Odroid and emo trigger take up so much cable room for how small the boxes are..... any ideas / suggestions welcome.

More pics to come

WOW a thousand posts!!!

I was going to post some volt build pics but I think everyone is probably sick of those. So straight onto Layout.
In typical me fashion the time spent thinking about locations and all that was more than the actual installation but in the end I think its a solid plan and locations.
the 4 atmos speakers are in line with the front l&r's but as a result this pushed them up against the bulkheads

Here you can see the four locations with the ceiling tile pulled out and wires hanging

Here is the side view. I was pretty happy with the centering of the atmos to the seating position and still had separation from the surrounds.
The right side was better separation than the left.

Speaker wire in my theater..... A LOT!!! I got a 1000ft of #14awg below is what is left..... 56ft.
That doesn't include the #12 for my nearfields LOL

I struggled a little with the best way to mount the speakers between the joists.
These Volt 8's have some weight to them.

The strapping is used in plumbing hanging pipe. Very rugged and tough stuff. secured with 3/4" panhead screws

The four speakers mounted

My intent from day one of design of the theater was to have everything hidden
So in keeping with that I made frames and stretched spandex across it.
One layer was to see through so I doubled up for every pleasing results.

The back side of the panel

The front side

And the final results

I couldn't be happier!!!
My daughter came down after and asked why I put the ceiling tiles back over the speakers..... she couldn't tell that it was fabric grills till she stared at it for awhile. She's 8 but it still made feel good about the hidden nature of the speakers.

I like my Odroid C2, supports TrueHD audio small form factor and was a reasonable price but no bluetooth, the updates just where not coming for Openpht and I want to dive into some live tv with plex in the future.

So I bought a Sheild..... initial setup was really easy and even had it in an activity (with bluetooth) in a few minutes..... all was good..... I thought
I'm not sure what is going on with this thing but the audio is hit or miss.... sometimes I get 2.0.... other nothing (till i adjust in settings) and others its fine....... very frustrating
Reboots just seam to make it worse.
One time after casting from phone for music I had a video resolution that seamed to be from the phone and was stuck there....until a reboot

Also for some strange reason on a power down my projector wont shut down in the "theater" activity (Epson, Anthem, Shield) yet when I change to "music only" (Anthem, Sheild) is turns off the projector..... weird

Really contemplating a factory reset.... not really impressed so far and I know many rave about this thing.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I have a Shield and the audio sometimes won't give you ATMOS and only 2.0. The trick is to just go to another audio track and then go back to the ATMOS track and that'll fix it. It's a little quirk but the Shield is still the best streaming device out there.

Hey Water. The room looks just awesome - great gear, clean look.

I was looking back through your thread because I remember you working with REW a while ago. I am starting work with REW now:
  1. Was it worth it all? REW has a lot of stuff going on - was it worth it or stick with aud calibration and be done?
  2. How much time did you have in REW and when did you decide you had it right and decide to quit?
  3. What was your process when you started? 10-300hz and then on from there or just full sweeps?

Trying for a real world feedback - REW, worth it or not? I tend to believe so but wow what a can of worms to open hehe...

Any thoughts, suggestions appreciated.

Hey Ddigler,
Thanks for the the compliment, Its a labour of love LOL

Let me caveat with.... I am not an audiophile but I like what I hear.
1) Yes I do think it was worth it particularly with the base and "smoothing" out some spots. I could hear a difference when the front and rear subs where playing nice together.
The quest for ultra flat in my opinion is not worth the time to me...... I don't think I can hear those changes

2) TIME IS RELATIVE LOL.... in the beginning several hours, some/many being learning. Thats part of the fun isn't it LOL.
Since the Anthem has been installed I did a quick REW on base to see that the subs where still ok but thats it.... but the anthem is just so sweeeeet sounding that I didn't dive deeper. A couple tweaks on surrounds and atmos. Maybe one day but its not high on the list right now.
A person can get sucked into the vortex of "perfection" but in the end I think the main question is .... Do YOU like what you hear?

3) In the beginning some full sweeps to see but mostly in the 10-300 range for mains to sub x/o and front/back sub interaction.

I hear ya on the real world feedback..... I am very happy with where it sits now.... could it be better.... probably to someone else's ears

Hope that helps.... I got a little rambley LOL

One day I will start the new theater....... one day..... THAT DAY HAS ARRIVED

Enjoyed watching anything lately?

If you haven't tried Spiderman - Into the Spiderverse I highly recommend it! It's excellent audio in both older DTS and Atmos!

Hey man, sorry I haven't been in the forums in a while.... been very busy watching movies and TV shows in the theater.
I have the system on pretty much everyday. Sometimes just for music when working out.

I did watch into the Spiderverse and really enjoyed! Recently finished a marathon of Men in Black including the new one..... always fun revisiting that series.
Also a mega marathon of all the Bond Movies.... 24.... that took while LOL.
For TV shows I thought Carnival Row was well done and recommend it.
