JDontee's Home Theater

Well, I'm close enough to done. With the upcoming KC Home Theater Crawl, I'd thought I'd post some pics of my room and equipment so people can get an idea of what to expect. My room is a little different than most. I had a lot of unfinished basement, so my dad had a good idea of setting up a rear projection system. It allows for plenty of ambient light while watching sports, or just hanging out. The projector room also houses all of the gear except for the PS4 because the bluetooth on the PS4 is horrible. Room dimensions are 16'W by 20'L by 7'H (ish)

Video Equipment:

Projector - Sony VPL-HW45ES
Screen - DIY rear projection material purchased from ebay with a reported gain of about 1.8. Final size is about 105" 16:9
DVR - HDHomeRun using NextPVR
OTA - Samsung OTA Box
AppleTV

Media/Gaming:

HTPC - custom built PC with Asus Hero VII MOBO, intel i7 with 16GB RAM, GTX 1080 Ti (previously 1070...previously 750 Ti). I use this for most of my media, TV, and light gaming including Hyperspin with Ultimate Arcade Drive and custom laptop controllers.
PS4
XBOX 360 with HD-DVD Player
PS3
Nintendo Wii, NES, Original Pong, N64, Sega Genesis all work and are in the Projector Room (just not hooked up since I have Hyperspin)
Samsung VHS/DVD Player (because you never know when you want to watch a VHS...)

Audio Gear:

Amplifiers - iNuke3000DSP X 2
AVR - Onkyo TX-NR1007
Speakers - Cinema 8 from DIYSoundgroup (LR), Alchemy 8 Center from DIYSG, BIC America FH8-W (surrounds)
Subwoofers - Stereo Integrity HT18 X 2 in sealed boxes, Ultimaxx 12 in custom ottoman for near field LFE

Software:
Kodi with MadVR
EqualizerAPO for upmixing and impulse filters
Hyperspin

Acoustic Treatments:

DIY Rockwool panels for first reflection points (except ceiling)
DIY Rockwool bass traps for corners

Seating:

Manwah Holding Limited Theater seats from Nebraska Furniture Mart
Sectional sofa for the back riser

Miscellaneous:

Harmony Smart Control as remote
GE Z-Wave Dimmer Switches controlled by SmartThings Hub
Voice Control - Google Assistant on Pixel 2.

Looks great! Don't you have a picture that shows off how bright your RP screen is?

Wow, that is a very gray screen! Is it really that gray in person? I could see how that would be a great fit for your room because having enough brightness is not an issue and that way you can have as good of blacks as possible. Was that the thinking with the gray screen?

Ha, either that or it's just how it looks in the picture and it's actually a white screen.

It's a little gray. I plan on putting a fresh bulb in the PJ before the crawl. After that, I'll take a picture with all the lights on so that people and see how bright it is with ambient light. This 8350 eats through bulbs. Of course, I never buy a factory bulb, so I shouldn't expect too much out of a $20-$50 bulb.

Props for still owning the original Pong.

also the Star Wars VHS. Unmolested.

I am going to need another movie night since as a host I won't get to go to many of the other rooms. I haven't been in maybe a year and there are lots of upgrades.

Upgraded to a MSI Armor OC GTX 1070 for the HTPC. Since I only have a 1080p projector, it doesn't even break a sweat for gaming or MadVR (current settings). After the rebate, it was $375 free shipping no tax and I got Ghost Recon Wildlands with it as well.

Good ole Google. I played around with a cortana app to control my theater. I have mixed feelings. I really wanted a Google Home, but they only come in white, which wouldn't blend in too well in my room. So luckily Google recently released an update that allows Android phones to use Google Assistant. With Google Assistant plus IFTTT, I am able to control my lights, smartthings hub and activities with my Harmony remote with my voice as long as I have my phone near me. Now, at the end of the movie, I simply say, "Okay Google, let there be light", and all the lights turn on.

I love my Google home / Assistant. I don't even use it for as much as I would like to because I don't have too many smart devices yet. But I do like as I am going to bed to say OK Google set the temp to ______. And its like "Ok setting the temperature to ________." Is amazing. I use it to play music or podcasts while getting ready. I really need to add some Hue lights in my house. I plan on using them in my theater but I want to put them all over the place.

"Upgraded" from the Epson 8100 (for some reason I thought it was the 8350 for years...) to the Sony VPL-HW45ES. @chirpie has the same projector and my experience in his room during the KC Crawl was burned into my mind. I found one used in the classifieds, so I thought I'd make the move. I know that some may think it's dumb to not go to 4k or FauxK when switching, but I guess I'm different. I really like the picture that MadVR creates and the Sony has great out of the box contrast. I don't need lens memory, and I wanted low lag time for gaming. Maybe my next theater will have a 2.35:1 screen, but for now, I'm enjoying this Sony.

Yeah, it looks great, even with the lights on. Brighter than the Epson. I wish I could find an easy/cheap way to calibrate it. I tried the THX tune-up app for my phone and it seemed to do a great job for the brightness and contrast, but for the red and hue, I didn't like the result. At this point, I'm relying mainly on the factory settings, which seem to look great.

Perfect for watching sports.

I tried all kinds of settings for the 5040 and I keep coming back to the factory settings. I'm sure we are "doing it wrong" but oh well.

So will you ever upgrade to Dolby Atmos? You system does sound great in 7.1 though.

If I do, I'd probably only do 7.1.2. I don't feel like buying a new AVR because my current one does everything I need. I'd rather spend the money on acoustic treatments. That being said...I've considered adding 2 speakers above the first row in the ceiling and using Dolby IIz. Prior to atmos, @Archaea showed me a clip of Jurassic Park using IIz and some inexpensive Sony speakers he had above his MLP. I thought it really increase the feeling of immersion. My current AVR can power 9 channels, so I am considering it. It would be the cheapest "upgrade" and if my AVR ever crapped out, I would be ready for a 7.1.2 Atmos. Furthermore, most of my media and games are not in Atmos, so I'm not to excited for it right now.

I see you have the Onkyo TX-NR1007, I have an Integra DHC-60.5 that is 9 channels as well and I wounder if it could do the same thing? I was just going to set up a second zone in my basement if I ever finish it to I can mirror the theater when watching a sporting event. I may look into that. I only am using 5 channels right now and have a passive sub hooked up to it, but am not getting any sound out of it. I need to find my mic and rerun Audyssey again. Hope that will fix it. I have extra amps and could use 9 channels, I just need to set it up.

Pro-logic IIz works surprisingly well for height channels. I thought it was worthwhile, and it is a gateway to future Atmos. I think Atmos ceiling speakers add about 15% to the overall cinema experience. In general, Dolby Pro Logic IIz is probably 40% of that Atmos ceiling experience. 2 ceiling speaker to 2 ceiling speakers compared. I did both Prologic IIz and Dolby Atmos with those inexpensive Sony speakers originally. Dolby ProLogic IIZ, Is an up-mixing algorithm, so it does get the occasional thing wrong, vs Atmos that is intentionally mixed to ceiling objects and so doesn’t make mistakes, but I typically used Prologic IIz before Atmos because I preferred it over standard bed 7.1, and the missteps were not terrible. The height speakers in Dolby ProLogic, IMO, should be over head or slightly forward overhead. Not on the front wall above your mains. I couldn’t even tell they were on when I tried that.

My onkyo is @Archaea 's old AVR. So I guess when he gets a 13 amp driven AVR, I'll buy his old one for atmos...

Downscaled 4k to 1080p looks great for games and movies, but yes, it could be considered overkill. I really thought VR would be further along right now, and that was another reason I wanted the 1080ti. Mining? Well, it would be a waste if it was just collecting dust. It'll pay for a starbucks coffee after a week right now.

I tried something similar on the front wall a long time ago and I agree with you. I couldn't tell they were on. If I added some ceiling speakers, they would be the same speakers I have for my surrounds. It's not an expensive upgrade, probably about $170 plus a lot of drywall dust after cutting the holes. The spot between the joists is slightly in front of the MLP, so I think the effect would be good. I have some cheap in wall speakers that are sitting in my basement that I thought about using for an experiment, but I can't quite figure out a way to temporarily position them to see if I like the effect. Any ideas on how to place the speakers in the position for some demo content would be appreciated. Perhaps I can just recruit some of the KC Theater Crew to come over and just hold them above my head...
