new guy building home theater, diy

Final phase-

***Denon X4000, Sony ubpx800, Sony vplhw15/JVC RS420, DIY Seymour av 106" 2.35:1 UF AT screen, DIYSG Fusion 10 pure for LCR, jbl 8330a side and rear surrounds, 8 jbl 12's on nu6000dsp***

Hello wanted to introduce myself and get some feedback.

First off my name is Bryan.

So over the last 1-2 years I've been getting into home theater. I have a room I'm building in my basement that measures about 24'x10 1/2'. I have a false wall for another 18" so total room length is around 25 1/2.

So I started by getting a projector. Went with a Sony vpl hw15. I love it, very quiet and great picture.

The first screen I got was a 125" 2.35:1 from silver ticket screens with a cinema grey screen...FAIL. way to much screen texture...just bad. I also learned audio is important on large screens. So next I did a diy seymour ultra fine AT screen. think it's around 105" and 2.35:1. Waaaay better screen!

I started with cerwin vega ls12s/ls6c with the old screen. WRONG! LOL. After that disaster I bought 2 more ls6c and I ended up 3 cerwin vega ls6c speakers, all vertical positioned for lcr.

Needed a new receiver so I ended up finding an outlaw 1050.

Next it was subwoofer time. I was running a cerwin vega lw 15 for awhile and it wasn't cutting it. Went with a diysoundgroup.com ported cube 15 with dayton sub.

Most recently I needed surround speakers and went with 2 mirage m290s. Since purchasing them I've put them as left and right mains and moved two ls6c to the rear for surround. I've found the less sensitive mirage speakers do not mix well with the vegas. 86db efficiency vs 92, I have read the mirage may be close to 89db but I find that hard to believe. I like the sound from them in stereo or Phantom center mode. The ls6c center is set at -10 and still mics a few db louder with test tones.

I've been using a Sony bluray but recently upgraded to a oppo 83 for better decoding then the outlaw can provide (oppo will be here tomorrow).

Currently all this is set up in a 12x11 room and it gets the job done. Once my room is finished I hope it sounds as good. I'm considering 2 more ls6c to replace the mirage 290s. My only complaint is volume right now since the mirage are so less efficient. I honestly love the sound though and they rock to run as a 2.1 Phantom center setup for tv shows on netflix. I also personally like the ls6c from cerwin vega too. I'm trying to keep cost down because eventually I want diysoundgroup.com home theater monitors or fusion waveguide alchemy 8s to run LCR.

So yea my setup currently is
Sony vpl hw15
Seymour ultra fine AT screen 105" 2.35
Ls6c cerwin vega center
M290 mirage main
Ls6c rear surround
Diysoundgroup.com ported cube 15
Outlaw 1050
Oppo bd83

My only worry is the mirage having such bad sensitivity it's effecting the rest of the settings for the cerwin vega speakers. Maybe the oppo can resolve some of that in its settings.

I've learned a lot, first and foremost, building a screen is the way to go. Secondly is matching speakers for same timbre and sensitivity all around, 3rd I think center channels play a larger role in home theater then left and right mains since most receivers have bass management that makes a 12" 3 way main speaker near useless ( could be wrong on that but I know the outlaw sets mains to small when using LFE).

Anyway just wanted to share my "theater".

Well this site blows on an android phone.

Here are some pictures...more to come. The room is much further along then this. But that's an idea. The screen is going on a false wall on the opposite end of the counter

Subwoofer, diysoundgroup.com dayton 15" ported cube.

The cerwin vega ls6c, I have 3 which will probably be my front LCR sound stage, and the two mirage 290s for 5.1 rear surround.

Built a countertop over the weekend out of a 2x8 and 2x4. The cabinet is a 12x24x54 upper cabinet from home depot due to room width. 13$ countertop works for me, and cabinet was discounted to 80-90$. Will be adding moulding for the corner drywall joints.

Well finally made progress, almost done but still more to do.

Going to do curtains or more fleece wrapped 1/4" wood on the side walls. Then some 48/24/1 sound panels. Going to change the lights too so they angle toward the seating position. Built the projector stand out of a free bathroom sink base lol. It's getting there

Still the worst site I've ever used on an android lol.

The attachments are top to bottom, bottom most recent. All black is deceptive, there a good 12-14' from the screen to projector. Screen is a diy job using seymour av center stage uf...106" 2.35:1, speakers are diysg fusion 10 pures, receiver denon x4000, Sony vpl hw 15 for projector.

If you are using Chrome on you Android phone, click the 3 dots at the top for the menu, then look for Request desktop site. Click the box. The site will then work like it does on your computer. Not sure it will make uploading photos. That has been kind of an issue lately for me. I used to be able to drag and drop and you could see the jpg. Now it just puts a link on there.

You could also download Tap Talk on to your phone or tablet. A lot of people use it and it seems to work better on smaller devices.

I need to get some pictures of it when it's cleaned. Still need a few final touches.

Ended up 7.1

3 fusion 10 for lcr
4 jbl 8330a for surround
1 quadhorn subwoofer
1 8" nearfield

Only consideration for an upgrade is 8 12s floor to ceiling in each front corner behind the screen.

I hunted down your build after seeing your theater avatar picture in the 12" JBL thread.
Always interested to see what others do in a narrow room. Difficult to see much detail in the dark pictures but looks like it turned out well.
Just a question: When you went with the acoustically transparent Seymour Screen why did you make it smaller? Being able to hide all speakers in behind gives you an opportunity to go almost wall to wall in such a small room. I imagine that the older Sony probably doesn't throw enough lumens to light up a larger screen, but equipment upgrades do happen.

As for subwooferage, given the length of your room it seems very possible to push a largish ported enclosure into each of the four corners. That would really even out bass response.
Those cheap JBL drivers will perform well if you can give them 4 to 5 cubic feet each tuned to 25 Hz and driven with an Inuke NU3000DSP.
That is essentially what I have in my room, but with the now unavailable Infinity drivers. Then maybe the quad horn would fit near-field behind your sofa?

Which ever way you go, good luck and enjoy!

Thanks! I didnt really know what I was doing and only left 14-16 inches behind my AT screen which was a mistake when it came to subwoofers. As far as the screen it wasnt the lumans I was worried about but the throw ratio that kept me to that size as well as seating distance. The projector would have to be farther back to fill the wall to wall screen and the ceiling is so low I wanted it as close to over the couch as I could to avoid hitting me head on it (which ive done atleast 3 times). I also thought wall to wall would look funny and wanted the entire space behind the screen to be open.

I dont think I have any pictures of the quadhorn in its final home on here, it fills the space very well on its own. I will have to add some.

Hey @trilkb , how are the Fusion 10 Pures? Do you ever listen to them full range or as 2 channel? I'm curious how well they do in the 60-90 hz area. I'm trying to not drop $1K for LCR without missing out on too much mid and upper bass. Thanks!

BTW, I like your build. You and I seem to have a similar mindset regarding ROI and value!

I do listen in stereo sometimes. I think I have them all crossed at 60hz right now. I listened to them full range for awhile when I didnt have any subwoofers and they had some low end but Erich said not to do that with these, they need a sub.

I love them but I got them used for 166$ a piece (and a day of driving) which I felt was a steal! So while I wouldnt mind upgrading to fusion 15's its just not really needed where I have my crossovers set and the price increase.

I think youd be happy with the fusion 10's but if you are buying new and can afford it and have room id go fusion 15's or htm 12's. You could run a 88 special center channel to match the fusion 15's Left/Rights.

I need to update some pictures on this thread! I now have 8 12's up front, nothing nearfield and the quadhorn (box, driver, and inuke1000) is collecting dust

Bryan,

Do you have any vertical braces on your screen frame behind the screen? I ask because I had 2 behind my Seymour AV materials and learned the hard way that they should be painted black before hand or you WILL see them as light passes through the material. Just an FYI that you may have already dealt with in some fashion.

I made sure there where no vertical braces behind my screen which is partly why my screen is the size that it is.

The home theatre room should be big in size so that it will ok for the sound. The soundproof is always the good choice with the speakers. Always interested in such rooms having the home theatre.

You can make a small-ish room work well with home theater. Less power needed to reach reference levels and fill the space with sound. I dont see anything wrong with a small room, it just depends how you treat it.

Thanks, Its hit and miss at places but Its a great little room that just kind of happened.

Got my new LCR

QSC AD-S12 for a center channel and 2 QSC AD-S82's for Left and Right. I wanted to go bigger on the center channel and the S82's will work fine for left and rights, both use the same 1.4" compression driver.

Need to start on my baffle wall now...no idea how I will do it lol.
