Wondering if the fine folks here might be able to offer some suggestions on speaker placement for a 7.1.4 setup. L/R/C is pretty obvious. The challenge is where to place the side and rear surrounds and the height speakers. As you can see from the pics the ceiling is vaulted. Also there are windows along one wall which prevents perfect side placement (although I can get close). The back of the room is slightly open so that restricts rear placement unless I put them higher on the back wall. Hopefully the pics show this. Ill be using DefTech DI in walls for all of it. I have a dedicated 2 channel high end stereo so this is really for movies and occasional music perhaps.

The room is approx 16’ wide 24’ deep. Ceiling probably 12’ at the very top. Couch is situated in the back middle of the room.

I think you answered your own question. You can get close to perfect, so get as close as you can. My room is terrible and WAF prevents my own theater from being 'perfect'. I call my theater the 'GED Theater' (Good Enough Dude). It's far from perfect but it still is amazing and I enjoy it very much. I don't sweat the imperfections and just enjoy it. Though I do wish I had been able to convince the EVP of Design that Atmos was a good thing.

I would put the right Side speaker as close to the window as possible and the left Side speaker directly opposite. Rear speakers on the back wall, spread as far apart as symmetrically possible. Try to have all 4 surrounds within a foot or two of seated ear level. Should give you excellent side-vs-rear separation AND wrap-around envelopment in the surround field.

Thanks for the suggestion. I agree on the sides being as close to the window. The rears I think are going to have to go on that wall in the back which would put them at about 7.5’ off the ground. The wall behind that only extends 3/4 of the way and it would be a real pain to run the wires. They will have directional tweeters that I can move 15 degrees. Other option is to just do 5.1.4. The angle on the ceiling is about 26 degrees so I think the atmos will go on those approx 8-9’ apart and will have to adjust the tweeters to downfire as much as possible.

I selected directional speakers. Was flip flopping between those and bipolar for the surrounds but seems that most recommend monopole for atmos. Last question....5.5 or 6.5” drivers for Atmos height speakers or does it matter?
