From Soundbar to 5.1.4 Atmos - Wife said shes leaving me

Hello all! I'm just beginning my build from a small 3.1 soundbar to a full 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos system. Attached are photos....this is what I'm working with so far!

Pioneer Vsx-LX503 9.2 Channel Receiver
2 Polk T50 Tower Speakers
1 Polk TSX 150C Center Channel
2 Polk T15 for Surround Left & Right
4 Polk T15 for 4 overhead ceiling speakers for Atmos

I'm going to be mounting the 4 Polk T15 speakers to the ceiling with heavy duty mounts (See attached) to studs. Instead of just screwing the ceiling mount to the Polk T15's as suggested, I'll be disassembling the T15's to use bolts and screw a nut and washer from the inside so it cant strip and fail.

The wife told me last night that she will be leaving me and getting her own apartment. She said people will laugh when they see "4 big a$$ speakers hanging from the middle of the ceiling".

So I come here....you guys wont laugh at me..... I will keep everybody posted. Wish me luck!!

Oh I bet she does!!
A few questions
..Are they pointed straight down? How heavy are they? How did you secure the mount to the speaker? Are the mounts attached to studs or just drywall?

Pointed at listeners ears
Not sure how heavy they are - around 8-10lbs maybe - they are Mordaunt Short MS3.10 if you want to google them.
I removed the driver, drilled holes through the cabinets and installed Tee Nuts from the inside.

I put bracing between the ceiling joists for the mounts when I built the house.

Thanks! I really hope it's going to be worth the upgrade. I'm expecting a mind blowing experience, especially after all this money and headaches!

I've already collected all the top Atmos 4k's over the past few months and refused to watch any of them until I was finished with 5.1.4.....My first watch will be Gravity diamond luxe edition!!

Update....I got rid of the 4 Polk T15's for the overhead atmos channels and got 4 Polk OWM3'S in white. They look way better and are a lot smaller and versatile.

I installed 2 of the 4 overheads (2 rears)
My couch is only 6 inches off the wall so the rear overheads are pretty much right above my surrounds as you can see in the picture.

Although it's not the recommended Atmos setup to do it this way, I still love it. But, if someone had their couch against the wall and had to choose between rear overheads and front overheads I would go with front. I could tell the rear overheads get a bit mixed in with the surrounds and it sacrifices some of the overhead sound. I will be installing the 2 overhead fronts in the next day or two.

Overall, sound quality is MUCH better and I already get an atmospheric/ bubble effect only with the 2 overhead rears

Looks pretty slick. Dumb question, i am building new home and in search of full HT set up. Is it important to have top notch speakers or top notch receiver? I would imaging speakers come first right?

I'm my opinion....I wouldnt spend thousands of dollars on a hi end receiver. I spent $550.00 on a 9.2 Channel receiver that is capable of 11.2 with an AMP, and it has been solid so far. I wouldnt imagine spending over $1000.00 on a receiver. So far I have 5.1.2 channels running on it with no AMP and its loud and clear enough without me having to turn the volume all the way up. I have actually yet to crank it all the way up in fear of my neighbors and wife...because it's that loud.

I would reccomend getting a cheaper receiver with Pre-Outs, this way down the line you can add your own amps. As prices go up in receivers, it's really the Amplifiers inside them that you start to pay for. Get a cheap one with pre outs. At the end of the day, a cheap receiver is gonna decode Atmos and DTSX the same way a hi end one will.

I would say yes, get good speakers. They dont even have to be expensive. I have Polks and they all sound amazing. If you can get some higher end speakers, then go that route rather than spending thousands on a receiver.

I love our resolve when it comes to this hobby. Big window in the way, no worries. Need a place for dolls / strollers, under the screen is fine. That pic made me laugh. We are all comrades in this battle , we shall soldier on!

Good Luck!

You should consider to to pull off the couch ~15 (at least 10) inches and you will feel/hear separate the surrounds and the Atmos speakers. And of course you will hear the "real" surround atmosphere. First just pull off, recalibrate the system and then check with some Atmos demos scenes. If it's not worth it, you can push it back...

My build is Officially DONE! A 5.1.4 for the win! I installed the top fronts and man, what a difference it makes. It really completes the 360° feeling of sound.

People aren't kidding when they say a full 4 overheads makes a world of difference from just two. Of course in order to really hear the MAJOR difference, you need a quality Atmos mix such as Mad Max. I've re watched a few titles so far and can confirm the extra 2 overheads is worth the upgrade and not just a marginal increase.

I still have to tuck some wires. As you see, I mounted the cable box on the back of the t.v. mount and have it plugged straight into the t.v. (cable sucks anyway) to avoid running so many wires.

I have my receiver underneath my speaker stand. The receiver has been running a bit hot since installing the overheads. As you see it only has about half inch of clearance/breathing room under the speaker stand. And being in between my couch and a wall doesn't help. I will be ordering a few 1" fans and boosting my speaker stand about another Inch so the fans can fit.

About $1600 later and about 10 hours of total install time, its finally done.
