I just got the UK version for the PQ. Last night I compared it with my bought-on-release US HD DVD. The differences are well noted in the screenshots already posted, and I could see them clearly when swapping still frames between the UK & the US, although on my 53" they are a bit harder to notice in motion. However, owning the UK version, there is a certain peace of mind that you're watching the "best" version for PQ, though!

What I was surprised by, not having played the HD DVD for a while (and presumably these comments apply to the US blu as well) was the improvement in the US editions over the UK regarding the presentation of some special features -

* Director's Notebook is simply a series of featurettes in the UK version, whereas the US edition offers you both an selectable Index like the UK, or you can flick through HD pages of the Notebooks, with clickable links to watch the featurettes. This is a nice enhancement of the material.

* Comics are HD, and animated. UK presents "comic sketches" which look SD and are actually different entirely to the US content.

* Posters are obviously HD and much clearer on US disc, look muddy and SD on UK

* There are a bunch of HD galleries of creature design, production design, and production scrapbook. UK only features a creature gallery as a hidden feature. Again, these look SD compared with the sharp images of the US disc.

US exclusives -
PiP track (can't comment, never watched it)
Charlie Rose show (48 mins)
Extra US trailer & 8 TV spots
Animated Comics
3 Production Galleries

UK exclusives -
Del Toro Guardian interview at the NFT
DVD comic sketches

While I'm glad to have picked up the UK blu for the PQ, I think when wanting to look at the extras, the US set has more elegant menus and the enhancements I listed above. I thought I'd post this as I don't remember ever reading about the differences in presentation of extras on the discs before.

To be honest, I didn't even bother to compare them. With the time I have available for my hobby, comparing audio gets bumped for picture comparisons. Technically the US is the best, but some folk say the DD on the UK is excellent also. I'm of the camp that audio does not have to be loseless to be excellent so I don't know if my ol' ears would necessarily notice a difference.

I felt the differences between the PQ & AQ of the different discs had been well covered, but the interesting differences in the way the extras were presented hadn't been touched on. That was the focus of my post.

Thank you for the in-depth comparison of the two releases. A shame the UK BD is marred by the lack of lossless audio.

If the nordic has same pic as UK it could be the best version yet though not english friendly but since i´m swedish it could be perfect even though i prefer english subs.

from what I heard the PQ is even supposed to be better than the UK disc. audio is reported being a bit worse though, but not as bad as the french HD DVD.

You can´t mean worse audio than UK disc since the UK have only DD5.1 and this DTS-HD MA?

Very nice. Grain structure is clearly better on nordic release and i don´t see how there can be a pitch issue with hd audio since there is no pal/ntsc problems and lossless 5.1 is just fine

You need to go away and do some research, then.

Standalone special editions of Optimum's Del Toro collection (Cronos, Pan's Labyrinth, The Devil's Backbone) will be released on 28th February 2011. So this should be the version to own.

Is it region-free? What's the deal?

That makes my day. My next UK order shall include it.

Are the extras in PAL again?

Best Regards

All of the extras are HD according to the reviews\\specs I read.
Actually I'm jazzed about this set.
I rented a laser disc of Cronos years ago and remember liking it.
I've never seen or heard of The Devil's Backbone.
Pan's is a beautiful, unique film.
It'll be interesting to compare this to the one I already have.
I thought the New Line was fine. Not perfect(what is) but still beautiful.
$25 per film including shipping is fine with me as the rewatch and sharing factor are about as high as it gets.

Just to be clear, the extras on the Guillermo Del Toro BD set are PAL or the extra on the Criterion release.
