One genuinely disturbing film this... I was left quite shocked by it when I first saw it on its theatrical UK re-release in 1998 (I was 18).

My mates I went to go and see it with all laughed and joked about it, but I was left really awestruck and confused, a really disturbing, brilliant, well-made film, which I took very seriously.

Well, per the original announcement:

Movies look their best when they look like movies. More Patton-esque remasters!

The decision to split each version on their own BD (both hopefully BD-50s) is excellent news. Warner has generally been good on transfers of their premier movies, which the Exorcist certainly qualifies as a horror classic that drew big box office.

With a big emphasis on "generally." They still seem to be a bit stingy when it comes to giving that little "extra" amount of bitrate needed to stave off filtering and compression errors, especially with VC-1. I've seen bitrates dip into the single digit range even with their modern encodes... the only time you should see that is for white credits over a black background.

I am glad that the theatrical cut will be included. Sometimes it's better to leave well enough alone, just like "Apocalypse Now: Redux." More does not always mean better.

Listen up, studios! Dolby Atmos Lite™ print-outs must stop!!

Wow a page and a half of comments since the official announcement and no mention of the digibook cover. Won't take before the "I hate digibooks" bitchin' starts I suppose.

Great news that we will get the original version.

Ugh!
Jamie, did you have too prove me right, so quick?!?!
I was hoping for some hope.
Maybe I'll be proven wrong over time; hope so.

I'm sure he's just saving face, making excuses etc,

Making excuses, indeed. In the color timing featurette on the disc, you can actually watch him making the changes. He flips the switch back and forth repeatedly to show off how wonderful he thinks the new colors look. They look exactly like the finished Blu-ray. You can also see about half the picture's detail vanish every time he does it.

but my point is we've had two releases since and they haven't been messed with.

I really hope that Friedkin has come to his sense. The thing that has us worried is that he gave interviews in response to the French Connection controversy where he explicitly stated that he was doing the same thing to The Exorcist.

I'm dismayed that Warner are giving prominence to the woeful TVYNS both on the packaging and as Disc 1 of the set. And since when was TVYNS "The Director's Cut" of the movie?

This is relegating the far superior original to the status of a bonus feature. I wonder how many newcomers to the movie will watch the extended cut and never watch the original because they think they've watched the definitive version?

Happy it's finally coming out on Blu, but far from happy with how it's being marketed.

As I recall, Friedkin said back in 2000 (when TVYNS was first released) that he still preferred the original cut, but he later "came around" to the extended version and now prefers it instead. So presumably it's a "director's cut" in that it's the one the director prefers, even if it might be more apt to call it the "Blatty cut".

Pretty sad to advertise a Blu-Ray with such a low-quality streaming video. I even clicked on the "Hi" button and it still looked terrible. Oh well, at least the colours look right

I'm seeing plenty, especially in that last shot. Of course, these are jpgs, I want to see pngs or similar.

Something just seems off to me. It quite possibly could be the JPEG compression.

Max von Sydow's face looks rather waxy in the third shot... but that's the old-age makeup, right? Right?

Plenty of film grain. Now, on a couple of shots zoomed in some of the grain looks slightly filtered as it has that look to it. However, I think this release will be fine.

I would need to see it in motion but it looks to me like clumps of grain, like Black Rain looks

Agreed, we'll have to see it in motion. The grain does seem a bit thick or blocky. I have noticed this on other Warner releases. Not sure if this is largely the result of how it was processed/encoded and/or the type of film used since the size and shape of film grain will vary.
