The DVD (which, admittedly, isn't very good either) is the R1 Criterion re-release. The Blu-ray caps are from the Region B BFI BD. Criterion hasn't released this on Blu and they have no stated plans to do so -- I think we can guess why.

How is "Red Dessert" from BFI? I want the film, but only with a quality transfer.

The funniest thing about the BD.com thread is seeing Pro-Buffoonist trying to paddle out of the whole he has dug for himself.

The Salo screenshots from the blu-ray.com's review look quite a bit better than what Xylon is showing us on this thread.

I'd reserve my judgement as to the quality of this BD transfer until I see it with my own eyes (which may never happen...;-)

I do not believe that the screenshots over there are actual captures direct from the disc, which is what Xylon does. As such, it is no surpise that those look "quite a bit better".

Also, I am one who generally agrees with the concept of reserving judgment on a titles overall PQ until seeing it with your own eyes in motion. However, there are some titles where the captures are so overwhelmingly demonstrative of the problems on the disc, that it is obvious it will not look good. Such is certainly the case here.

I suppose that a lot of you know that I hate grain (so I wouldn't defend it), but my Salo looks more like the DVDBeaver.com pictures, and isn't like the images posted here. In other words, it looks OK, not great, but OK.

By the way.. there is an image on beaver of an electricution that I don't think is in the movie???

Genius is an insult to my intelligence!

There's several photos of electrocution, fun with live rodents, and other 'charming' acts that don't appear in the film itself. Reviews from the film's premier supposedly talk of scenes that don't appear in the longest version of the film known to exist (as released by BFI), so we can only assume that the full, unedited version has been lost. It's not uncommon for promotional photos from movie sets to be different from what appears in the film proper, but these would be rather extreme examples...

One of the worst HD transfer ever created. So sad that anyone can think of this as passable.

Then again what else is new

I agree. The BD looks just plain bad. I'd get the SD-DVD over the BD if I were to buy either.

this transfer has so little detail and is so blotchy and washed out that i would take the dvd over the bluray. There is something wrong with that indeed. Never would I say that, as usually the bluray would be less artifacted, but it looks like when a cheap digicam tries to remove the noise from a high iso picture unsuccessfully.
