Every time Fox studios don't go "amateur hour" on their Blu-ray release unlike DNR "waxworks" Patton and the The Longest Day I always wonder if any of the "smart people" in there realize what a huge mistake they made with those two HD transfers. Why do it in the first place? If there is nothing "wrong" with the transfer then why not apply it to South Pacific? or any of the catalog titles?

Why did they left South Pacific alone? Well because the PQ is what its suppose to be. No more of that "grain is bad" nonsense. Catalog titles this year has been left alone with no excessive DNR infestation. Complaints from this forum has been heard and noted. I wonder if other studios listened?

The PQ and AQ is excellent. Most daylight scenes has the fine details that rivals even How The West Was Won. The musical scene "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair" comes to mind. There are some dust and dirt some of which is very visible and I find very distracting. The scene where Luther jumped off the plane and the Japanese are shooting at him, look at the bottom frame. Its huge when watching it on my projector.

What is the point including the Road Show version? Its not in HD. The extended scenes are not even remastered.

The first HD musical from Rodgers and Hammerstein is a winner. If the rest of the R&H movies looks like this then we have nothing to worry about. I mean it could have been worst:

Dang, the road show version looks terrible.

Xylon, thats not noise in the raft scene, its just seaweed that the director wanted to be in the frame originally, but they didn't have the technology at the time, so they just add it in to the BR version.

As far as I'm concerned, Rodgers and Hammerstein are the gold standard of musical theater. With apologies to Lerner and Lowe and anybody else, Rodgers and Hammerstein are in a league of their own. I started writing letters two years ago begging for R&H on hidef. Of course, I know one man begging doesn't do much good but I felt compelled to register my thoughts.

SOUTH PACIFIC is as perfect as I could have imagined. Looks perfect...sounds perfect.

I'm extremely encouraged. When they release OKLAHOMA! on BD, I will sit in front of my big screen, watch it twice and then go step in front of a bus...because my life will be fulfilled and I will have nothing left to look forward to .

This looks very good. Come on Fox! Re-release "Patton" and "The Longest Day" the way they should have been done....

And I am sorry to admit it, but I have never seen "South Pacific". I will give it a rent

All I ask is one of those "silent" updates. Just start pressing a new version and put it into the same packaging with an identifying mark on the back. No fanfare nor embarrassing admissions of error necessary.

I don't feel special...

I will take it any way I can get it too

"Patton" is one of my Top 10 favorite movies of all time. I still bought it on Blu-Ray and have watched it twice. But it always bugs me as to what might have been.

I am just glad that it appears that someone at Fox came to their senses with the catalog releases in 2009 (minus the French Connection debacle).

fox can't be blamed for a director dorking around with the transfer

I'll blame them for letting it out the door without a non-dorked-around-with version included in the package, too!

I don't feel special...

As bad as the road show version looks, I'd much rather have it than not as it doesn't exist anywhere else in any form, aside from on the DVD release.

I'd have preferred it if the RS version had been HD as well, but at least I don't need to keep the DVD version this way.

^^isn't that just seaweed, kelp or some type of brush? He looks to be close to shore by the look of the breakers 100's of feet away.

Is it just me or is quoting already posted screenshots a waste of bandwith?
BTW, either that screencap needs a bikini wax or there was fuzz in the camera

It ain't ignorance causes so much trouble; it's folks knowing so much that ain't so

I'm sure you can tell definitively whether it is hair/dirt while watching it in motion, but from the still it just looks like some type of plant/seaweed/brush.

I will have this on Monday and will take a look myself.
