I have the opportunity to post this thread to better show to the uninformed what Sergio Leone westerns should look like without the over use of DNR tools. As you can see the difference is incontrovertible. This movie looks better, sharper and preserves the natural "film-like" look. That is all I will say about it here on this thread.

For now there is no date for US release. The best way to get it is to import or Ebay.

You really had my hopes up when I saw the thread title.

AlexBC 05-08-2009 06:56 AM

WOW, the BD really does look incredible!

What studio did release this? I gather it's an itallian release exclusive.

What a shame TGTBATU that's realeased by a major studio like FOX can get nowhere near this great treatment.

Thanks again for your amazing work Xylon.

ps: I guess this is the first time I get the be the first poster commenting on the picks

I almost beat you to it.

Yah real shame about the other movie. The pics in the other thread show obvious smearing which is a telltale sign of DNR and of course you can see the smoothness on the other one which just looks wrong and less detailed. Of course some will defend it and say it's the camera or something else just as silly. These pictures look film like and i would buy this in a heartbeat whilst i will not touch the other one which is annoying as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is the best western ever made. ( spagetti )

Paul Arnette 05-08-2009 07:04 AM

Where are some good places to pick up this disc?

That honor belongs to Once Upon a Time in the West.

I would also like to know where this disc can be bought.

BTW Foxy, not to hijack this thread, if you could take a look at the thread bellow. I asked Eric, but I'd like to know what would be your say on the matter.

If Clint had done the movie instead of turning it down i would agree but although Bronson is ok he ain't Eastwood.

Gekkou 05-08-2009 08:17 AM

Wow, those shots look excellent. It looks like the film hasn't been molested, and it has an English audio track. I may just have to import this, assuming I can find a good price for it.

I liked Bronson, and he had some great lines. "I saw three of these dusters a short time ago, they were waiting for a train. Inside the dusters, there were three men. Inside the men, there were three bullets."

Speaking of which, where's Paramount with Once Upon a Time in the West? I saw a nice looking print from the latest restoration at the end of last summer; they must have a BD in the works.

Leone did not want Eastwood for the Bronston role - he only wanted him, Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef to play the three men that were shot in the beginning

That's an older, less extensive restoration though. I believe this new one was from Cineteca Nazionale and Ripley's Film of Rome with the actual work being done by Digital Film Lab in Copenhagen, working from the original negative.

Here are some worthwhile links with details:

Seems to look lovely. A nice analog-looking image. A little odd that they gave this a restoration, but not The Good/Bad/Ugly, since I imagine most would give it higher status as a classic

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly had a beautiful restoration done and Clint and Eli even recorded vocals for some missing dialogue.

I think all three movies and Once Upon A Time in the West had restoration work done but it's what happened on the way to Blu Ray that has affected the image quality of that movie.

The transfer was DNR'd a long time ago (for the SE DVD). I have a HDNet cap from 4 years ago that looks identical to the BD.

I was wondering that myself. The Beaver has a few links, but I didn't check which one is the cheaper or most reliable.

Yeah, I checked those out. Two reported it not in stock, and it appeared the third didn't ship outside of Italy.

These pictures look phenomenal. Is this disc region-free?

If you plan on buying this get it now before some retailers raise the price. No plan for US release.

It most certainly does!

These caps look better than I would expect. I'm surprised that there isn't even more grain. I would be curious to know how this transfer was done.

Edit: looks like it was done off the O-neg.
