The 7.1 audio is pretty good.

As for action flicks, they rarely have a story line worth mentioning, and The Expendables is no exception to this rule.

I bought my copy at Walmart for $18.96. The slipcover is very nice. Not sure if I like the big cut out on the back of the slip. Oh well. I can't wait to watch The Expendables this weekend. I'm pretty sure my down stairs neighbor will complain again.

The trailer was obviously made before editing was completed, very similar to Rambo in this regard. It has lots of little pieces of shots and alternate angles that aren't in the film, but I stuck with matched frames. It's actually one I saved from another disc, can't remember which; the one on The Expendables disc is a more recent trailer with color timing closer to the completed version and a lot more compression artifacts.

HD theatrical trailer vs Russian Blu-ray vs Lionsgate Blu-ray

Thanks for the comparison shots. I think this is going to be a case where the director's extended version is going to be worth the wait. The film was very entertaining and I enjoyed watching it theatrically, but it felt "shortened" for lack of a better term and probably is going to be improved with a running time that allows it to breathe more.

It's fun to note, that the trailer has the standard issue orange and teal effect, yet the actual film survived it.

I just watched this today and came away thinking that the teal-and-orange trend hit this movie hard with the ugly stick.

Back off man, I'm a scientist.

Are the caps reversed, then?
The ones labeled as BD don't look bad at all.

Not reversed. There's a reason I label every one at the same time as capping them. Both timings are stylized but I don't think the theatrical qualifies as T 'n' O.

I've added shots from the Russian disc to the grid up above. Surprised to see more color differences. The master used is actually different, as the title is shown in Russian rather than subtitled.

Well I'm a senior with a lot of movie viewing. In Blu-Ray I have Lord of The rings/Aliens Anthology, Underworld collection/ Die Hard series, Blade Runner, Matrix and on and on etc.

The Expendables has to be if not the worst it ranks at the top of my terrible movies list. I pretty much liked the whole cast but it was the stupidest movie I've seen in years. I'm just sayin'....

Oh.. I liked it!

Just ridiculously huge body counts, bloody deaths, big knives and mega-explosions!! A testosterone fest!!

I had it turned up 3 db above reference and it was just fantastic! Great soundtrack and video!

Brainless, plotless, pointless and violent as hell... sometimes its a good [email protected]

What story!?

Goodbye to a great audio and video genius and writer... JOHN GANNON. I enjoyed your friendship, wit and a nice long run we took around Indianapolis at CEDIA years back... and for buying my Runco 980 Ultra years back... you saved my ass! Rest in peace.

I thought it looked fine. Plenty of detail. Check your calibration.

Did this Blu-ray have forced subtitles?

In terms of LFE, size does matter!

AFAIK, no. But why would it have forced subtitles in the first place? We're still in North America no?

(It's been a while since I've watched it, did they speak anything else than english?)

Yeah. If you mean an actual subtitle track that can't be turned off then the answer is "no" for the US release. If you mean English subtitles "burned" into the video track for some parts, I'll defer to someone who has watched it more recently.

I'm also sort of curious why it matters.

Yeah. Its dark. Reminds me of War (Rogue Assassin). German one is the worst I think in terms of PQ. The Russian BD seems to have better contrast and brightness.

Since both trailer and the russian blu-ray is brighter one can only guess Stallone wanted the dark feel on US disc. I would rather have gone for the bright/colorful trailer picture but that's me

I guess I'm late to the show here with rental blu ray's, but what the heck is up with Expendables being only DD 5.1? Is this the norm now with rentals!? This really annoys the hell outta me, and now am wondering why i just don't rental the DVD equivalent.

I don't do the Redbox too much, I think this will be it for me.

Not happy

I just rented this movie from redbox and am watching it right now. I thought this movie was supposed to be in DTS-HD Master Audio. I rented the blu ray, the only options for audio are Dolby Digital and Spanish Dolby Digital. WHAT GIVES!!!! Does redbox get "special" blu ray copies that don't have the lossless audio formats or something?
