Breaking in the new Wharfedale Jade 7's. I thought, what better way than Joe and Beth in Amsterdam. These things are so sweet. If this is how good they sound now, I can't wait. The more you drive them the better they sound.

Time to check out this Blu-ray...

[Edit] To my old ears it seemed the sound started out a bit thin and I'm thinking, I'm gonna feel weird giving these guys 3
Then I tried kicking up the volume several notches. That helped a bit and then things started sounding better. Maybe it was my ears getting warmed up or the sound improved, which was possible since this is a mix of 4 performances.

Most of the sound seemed to come from up front and rightfully so. The one time the surrounds really came into play was during Baker's drum solo.

Soon I'm really enjoying the music and these guys looking like they're havin' fun. I also see the crowds are really enjoying the music and I'd say most were young enough to be these guys kids and grand kids. The beauty of masters playing great music, age disappears for a spell, maybe even my own

Finally picked up both on BD. Excellent audio and video. Started with VHS with Fantasia when my kids were small, then DVD when 2000 came out. It truly is timeless. I like the 'DisneyVision' sidebars to maintain OAR and still fill the screen.

Is that comparing to the stereo or 5.1 mix on the BDA?

Hi Waboman,

I was hoping for a price drop but finally caved in

Early on Bonnie Raitt sang "Love Has No Pride". Loved it Reminded me of a lady love from the 70's, when I looked as seen in my long haired photo to the left We lost contact for over 30 years and she crossed my mind many times. A couple of years ago we managed to connect and I got to see her one last time, as Bonnie's song says at the end, "I'd give anything to see you one more time.". We talked of old times and the years in between. She looked great although she was fighting a losing battle with stage four cancer. I'm grateful I got to see her one last time...

Four hours+ of older folks making music, plus some bonus tracks, it was worth it to me I'm not a huge fan of heavy metal but Metallica opened on disc #2 and sounded pretty good to me so they were probably great! I saw them at the Bammies in San Francisco, IIRC, it was in the mid to late 80's...

If you have plenty of material to enjoy you could leave it in your cart and see if it drops in price or just buy it and enjoy.

Regards, Ken (Retired)

While technically DVD-A discs, just listened to Talking Heads Remain in Light and Speaking in Tongues and both were excellent for recording/mix. I would put SiT in particular as one of the best multichannel music discs I have heard and a hair above RiL, but both are fantastic.

Comparing the DTS-HD MA track on the BD to the original studio track on CD.

Although I still have to give the BD a proper listen (and a more thorough A/B against the CD), the following are the notes I made shortly after my brief initial listen:
Quote:
Listened to several songs using two BD players and comparing the DTS-HD MA track on the BD to the to the 1973 stereo audio on CD. Audyssey on, DEQ off on both machines. Volume matched by ear (i.e., roughly equal).

THE GOOD
- The BD audio was more "open" and "brighter" (or less "veiled"), and more immersive.
- Better separation of instruments.
- Some nifty effects (like panning the for vocals in "Helpless Dancer" across the mains and surrounds.)

THE BAD
- The bass seemed anemic on some songs.
- The front left and right channels were reversed on some songs (so that on the BD the guitar was coming out of the "wrong" speaker compared to the CD).
- The reverb on the vocals was more prominent and, initially at least, was somewhat distracting.
- Selection of the various menu options was accompanied by loud and jarring clicking/snipping sounds.

Overall, though, a pretty impressive re-mastering.

That said, the advantage was diminished when I played the same songs on the CD in multi-channel stereo. For whatever reason, the overall sound seemed brighter and more immersive than the BD.

The BD release is definitely interesting, but while it "re-imagines" the original album audio - and does so quite well - it doesn't render the original album obsolete, not by a long shot and especially with the option of multi-channel stereo to give it some new dimension.

So, although at $20 it was worth picking as a curiosity, I expect that I won't be keeping it and that I'll stick instead to the original album, which is a very well-produced piece of classic rock.
YMMV, of course.

I'm not familiar with XTC in any medium, but I got to figure when two of a four "man" band are arguably the best ever at their respective instruments and the others simply exceptional put on a small stage in an intimate venue with a walk on by Eric Clapton, it's got to be pretty hard to beat.

edit: I'm referring to the Jeff Beck blu-ray, of course.

And a tip of my hat to the guy who made the early eagles entry and thereby set the bar so low with ridiculous, awful pap so as to make everyone feel uninhibited to post their recommendations.

This was the first time I had ever heard XTC. I'm not even sure what to compare it to! Heard some Talking Heads type music in there at times. I thought the music and mix were a lot of fun though!

Hi Toe,

I agree with your assessment of Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scott's BD. I also think Beck's bass player, Tal, is the cutest one in the business

I remember hearing XTC on FM rock stations many years ago and decided I'd give it a go based on your opinion. Ordered one from Amazon marketplace seller.

[Edit] Email just popped in that my order has shipped, that was fast

Good call on Beck's bass player! I had forgot how cute she was until you jogged my memory.

Curious to hear your thoughts on the XTC disc when you get it and it was a total shot in the dark for me as I knew/know nothing about the band. I ended up buying it due to the rave reviews/rating for the 5.1 mix/recording that I read about a few places including this thread.......... http://www.quadraphonicquad.com/foru...A-BluRay-Audio The hype was certainly justified for me and it is definitely one of the better sounding discs in my collection I would say.

Just finished watching The Moody Blues concert at Red Rocks(DVD) which I always enjoy and am now getting ready to watch, for the first time;

Deep Purple Live in Verona (BD)

[Edit] Wow! It was a blast. I almost passed on it when Amazon was selling it for $3.99. I received it on the 7th so its been sitting for several days.... Well, I had some things I was going to comment on but before coming in to write my [Edit] comments I read through the program booklet and I was glad I hadn't read it first. Only thing I'll note was the 4th Cellist to the right, Frany, looked like she was having a great time and rocking out herself as did some other members of the orchestra...

It was great from the very start.

So, normally 5 is my highest rating but at $3.99 I'm "forced" to give it

Of course music is a very personal thing and you may totally disagree with me

Just watched Shania - Still The One, Live From Las Vegas. Great concert with a good video presentation. Somewhat disappointed with the 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio presentation on this disk. It is really more of a stereo presentation with reverb to the surround speakers. There is absolutely no sound from the center channel throughout the presentation. That is not to say that the sound was bad, it was excellent with clear vocals and good instrument separation, just more of a stereo effect instead of 5.1 surround.

The Last Waltz

I recently picked up The Last Waltz and noticed that when I play it out of multi-channel from my Oppo 103 through my Yamaha RX-A1020 the bass is very, very weak. I have to increase the volume a lot on the sub to get any sound. If I switch to the AV channel on the receiver the bass at expected range.

Did anyone else notice this or is it just me and my settings that need more adjustment...somewhere?

Hi ghanley,

<----- that's me around the time I attended The Last Waltz concert

Well, my memory is not good enough to recall, how much bass there was at the concert, been almost 40 years ago, so I popped the disc in my Blu-ray player, Samsung F7500, feeding Denon 4520CI via HDMI,, and the bass sounds on light side but I didn't have to turn up my sub to hear something. Certainly as loud as many rock albums. My CD version, played on another setup, sounds about the same, not a lot of bass. I was listening to the Dolby I'll go try the DTS track...... Well, the case says DTS-HD Master as well as Dolby but my Denon isn't seeing it. Do you get the DTS track?

Okay, I just went and plugged my sub directly into my player and without changing the gain on the sub I'd say the volume was quite low. I could hear some sound but certainly not at a level at which I would listen.

Are you using the analog outputs on the Oppo and getting low bass and then switching to it's HDMI output and getting a more normal level? If that's the case then you might want to post on one of the Oppo threads also. I don't know if you have a problem or its just the soundtrack...

Sorry I can't be of much help

Hi Matt/Ken.

Yes, the low bass is observed from the analog multi channel output. I don't think it's in OPPO issue as all my other 5.1 sources (recent releases) sound great from analog multi channel. The receiver information showed analog 7.1 for multi channel and DTS 7.1 from the AV1 (HDMI) channel.

I'm thinking it's a bad mix in the disk but I was wondering if anyone saw the same issue.
