From what I can tell in Canada the Samsung Player is being released on March 11. Not cheap at $600CAD either and only a one year warranty.

I have ordered:

Samsung 8500 UHD Player

X-Men DoFP
The Martian
Chappie

Shameless plug... I started a website www.realorfake4k.com that you can sort through titles to see how much they should be improved due to mastering and cameras used.

Sometimes UHD discs aren't really 4K...

The Last Witch Hunter

Trying to decide what to do with the upcoming UHD version of The Last Witch Hunter.

My Denon gets it's DTS X update in a few weeks. The Samsung UHD player comes in a few weeks. I'd love to hear the DTS X, but there are so few movies with it. Would also like to hear DTS Headphone:X.

I'm tempted to order The Last Witch Hunter to get the DTS X, but it apparently is a terrible movie. The HD version is 14.99 on Amazon. The 4K version is 42.99.

Part of me says to spend the extra $28 go get the UHD version. If the movie was half-way decent I would without question. But I think I'll listen to common sense and get the HD version and use the money I'll save to get a different UHD movie.

Go with the standard Blu version. You will have plenty of better demo material to show off your system with in the coming months. Wait for movies you want to see over and over.

Due to the movies being mostly upscaled 2k, my choices will be limited to the Sony releases and Maze Runner films.

I love Chappie so I would recommend that one. Maze Runner one seems to be 4k but with 2k special effects. Maze Runner 2 is a bit perplexing and I may hold off on that one.

I just have this feeling the upscaled movies will be re-released in the future with proper 4k and won't bother with them.

Right. Wondering too where they gonna get the material: practically all movies shown in theaters are 2K DCP, including something like IMAX presentation of the Star Wars. Specter is one of [very] few exceptions.

There's a plethora of back catalog films shot in 35mm+(Disney comes to mind). I'm sure some studios can bank on that for at least a little while.

4K from 35mm film? Might not be all that good, not much better than 2K anyway. IMAX would be able to exhaust 4K pipe though.

Every studio has been scanning and restoring 35mm films at 4K for nearly a decade now, while 2K is used for budget projects. Even some 16mm projects are being done at 4K now. IMAX and 65mm is more along the lines of 6K-8K for scanning and remastering/restoring at 4K.

I guess what I was saying was that you can scan a 35mm at 100K, that would only mean you would end up with 100K of noise. Anyway, to end up with a good BD/2K DCP from film you _need_ to work with a 4K scan. You wouldn't be able to get a good 4K BD /DCP from that, though. It would be only marginally better than BD/2K DCP.

I lot of buyers in the Samsung UHD thread on this site are unaware that many UHD BDs will not be native 4K. Not sure where they have been.

Those same claims were made about 1080p in the early days, which 35mm turned out to be superior too. Sorry but you have a lot to learn about the film format, the below 4K digital camera source UHD BDs (of which there are many) will look worse then original negative 35mm. Next you will be writing 65/70mm will not 'look good' either.

I preorded Peanuts, Kingsmen and the Martian from the foxconnect deal that was 30% off. Ended up only around for 3 movies shipped. Wasnt there some some space documentary movie that was both 4k UHD and 3d bluray discs?

Don't forget Shout Factory has the UHDBD rights to IMAX stuff and will be releasing several very scenic titles, if that's your cup of tea.
