I picked up the 4K version of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald from the Redbox this morning while getting Aquaman. Mine had a 7.1 channel Atmos / Dolby True HD track that was output when I selected English on my LG UHD player (see attached image). MakeMKV (PC program) listed several multi-channel audio tracks for the disk(7.1 True HD as well as two Dolby Digital 5.1 English tracks and several Dolby 5.1 tracks in other languages). It doesn't seem like the rental market for 4K is large enough to warrant producing stripped down versions of the disks for rental only.... at least one can hope.

My little town in the upper midwest has two kiosks. One had Spiderverse in 4k today; at least it said so, I didn't rent it.

We are a long way from anywhere. It was probably dropped off by someone traveling.

The first of the 4K rentals showed up in three of the four Redboxes here locally. If you want to watch Mary Poppins you're in luck, but that's the only one they had in any of them.

They've got to get a few more new releases and reserve online working for 4K to really test the waters.

See ya. Dave

I meant four that I use regularly, all within a mile. There are many more within 10 miles.

They seem to keep the 4k page at Redbox.com updated with the releases that are currently available, though not all at all boxes. https://www.redbox.com/4K

Unfortunately, it’s not a complete list. Some of the older titles are missing. So is Bumblebee. But it’s better than what they had before.

Agreed...it's a bit hit and miss at the boxes in the Metro Detroit area....I've seen anywhere between 10-25 or so titles at various Kroger/Meijer/Walmart kiosks in the Northern Detroit suburbs. Here is an example of current content available at one nearby Krogers....

Also agree with others that (1) on line 4K UHD reservation capability and (2) on line (for portable devices) recognize Red Box gift card credits/balances for payment require immediate updates.

Redbox now allows me to see and reserve UHD titles via browser. I did not see this option in my iOS app (yet).

I hope they add more titles soon.

Thanks for the head's up. Since they finally added the ability to see UHD titles, it looks like Redbox is starting to expand UHD BD availability to the Sacramento area now :-)

Where can I rent 4K DVD's

I have a new 5.1.4 home theater and would like to rent 4K DVD's. I was renting blu-ray from Netflix but they told me they don't rent 4K. Red Box in not available in my area. Any suggestions? Thanks

Not sure where you are located, but I have been successful in renting from the few remaining FamilyVideo stores in my area.

thanks, I just checked and they are not in my area.
Do you think 4K Disks are worth the effort in finding them, cost of 4K DVD player, and the cost of buying 4K disks, compared to the ease of streaming? I have a new 5.1.4 system and I find that streaming 4K from Amazon, Netflix, HBOGO is very impressive. The sound is really great with multi PCM

I think it's largely a matter of personal taste and maybe system nowadays. Streaming quality has come a long way.
I am usually very happy with the picture quality of today's streaming services (HD, 4k) for 'non-critical' viewing on my living room setup (65" C8 OLED), but definitely prefer a well transferred, well mastered UHD disk in my dedicated HT (Oppo 203, JVC RS520, Panamorph UH480, 136" scope screen) for 'big' movies. Similarly can be said for audio.

Is UHD worth to you?

Before I upgraded my system to 5.1.4 I was renting Blu-ray from Netflix as the audio quality was night and day better than the 5.1 that I was streaming. Now that I have a new receiver I am streaming with Multi PCM and the sound quality is excellent. I won't know if 4K disks are worth it until I get a chance to play one in my system. I have a Sony 1100ES on order so I won't know until I get that

I think you will be very happy with watching UHDs on your Sony :-)

I have found that it often comes down on how the content is mastered/transferred: I have seen very watchable DVDs, but also UHDs with very poor PQ IHMO. Ready Player One comes to mind with its real world scenes (shot in 35mm), as opposed to the ones in the virtual world (shot in 4K). I understand that's how the director intended it, but I still don't like it.

I agree with and am personally entrenched in Axel's camp. I continue to enjoy this hobby at this level after a long career. I have no issue with devoting discretionary income to this end....some spend fortunes growing orchids, collecting wine, buying cars, travel, etc...to each his/her own. I'm continually thrilled and amazed at the cinematic and audio experience of my HT. I'm only saddened by the fact that my adult children do not share my same perspective...millennials appear to be perfectly content with their portable/mobile devices with miniscule images and mono audio! So...yes...for me....its well worth the effort!

I don't even want to say what it is costing me to upgrade home theater to 5.1.4. I'm just lucky that I have a wife who does not object. She appreciates the new sounds and the 65" TV. My 15 year old daughter hates have big floor speakers and the large center speaker. Previously all the speakers were in the ceiling. I don't think she notices how amazing it sounds.
My 21 year old son and his friends were over last week and they loved listening to Tidal on it.
I am looking forward to getting my new 4K DVD player and trying out 4K disks

Just wanted to get this thread a bit more active and make mention that the “Family Video” locations near me (Northern Detroit suburbs) have been very good at adding new 4K titles on a weekly basis...more titles and more timely than Redbox. According to Wiki, there are over 700 FV stores across 19 states and Canada. Curious to know what others may be experiencing at their FV locations.

Epson: 5040UB | Elite: 115" Fixed Frame CinemaScope (2.35:1) | Onkyo: TX-RZ920 + M-5010 (7.2.4) | Klipsch: RF-7 II's, RC-64 II, RS-62 II, RB-61 II MICCA: M-8C (Atmos) x 6 | SVS: PB16-Ultra x 2 | Philips: BDP7501, Panasonic: DMP UB900, Oppo: UDP-203

I also have had great experience with FV

But they are anything but convenient - the nearest one is across town - a 15 minute drive. On the other hand, Redboxes are literally every where I go.

Yeah...there are trade offs...but between the two, I can usually accomplish what I’m after. My nearest FV is also about 15 min away but not an issue for me personally as it gives us retirees somewhere to go. Physical media will inevitably give way to streaming but I’m doing my best to delay it.
