I don't purport to understand studio licensing and RB's distribution system but there is likely some truth in everyone's comments. I've also noticed that there is great deal of variation in titles available each week in the different test markets...and even in the same test market....from none to one to a delayed new release in relation to what is available for retail sale and at Family Video on Tuesdays. Additionally, at least in my Detroit test market, the number of available 4K UHD Blu-ray titles at various kiosks typically number from about a dozen to two dozen...and mostly less recent titles. Out of curiosity, I reviewed RB's earlier May 2018 announcement and posted the except below:

Seattle will join Austin, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami and New York City as test markets, with more than 2,500 kiosks featuring 4K UHD Blu-ray discs. The rentals will be available for $2.50 a night, Redbox said in a news release Tuesday.

“This is a major move for Redbox as we focus on expanding consumer access to home entertainment options across price points and formats,” Galen Smith, CEO of Redbox, said in the release. “As the popularity of 4K content increases and pricing of 4K hardware decreases, we’re excited to offer the best viewing experience at the best price for 4K Blu-ray discs.”

Early titles available in the higher-resolution format include “Black Panther,” “The Commuter,” “The Matrix” and “The Martian.” New releases and popular catalog titles will be added weekly, and the number of titles and copies will vary by kiosk and location.

Cool Midwest has awesome "Family Video" outlets: 4K in abundance AND same $ as 2K Blu-ray!

I will never complain about living in relatively "rural" Upper Peninsula of Michigan area. We have the very, very wonderful "Family Video" stores (rental) in the U.P., and northern Michigan AND Wisconsin. They have virtually ALL major releases in multiple copies of 4K and FOR THE SAME RENTAL PRICE as a 2K Blu-ray. I love it !
Soooo much better than Netflix discs, on convenience and price. They told me in our local store that business is G R E A T.

This mirrors what we’re experiencing with the “Family Video” stores in S.E Michigan...current 4K UHD releases consistently each and every Tuesday at Blu-Ray prices. Furthermore, 1/2 off promotional discounts are available and can be purchased in advance by the month.

Shazam! is available UHD here but not Breakthrough. Sometimes I wonder about Redbox marketing though as I think they are a little off on understanding their target UHD market.

Support your local businesses and when you want to buy a disc try to use them if you can. Local video stores will do more for the format than the mutant red coke machines. Stores actually check the conditions of their discs too.

There are no video rental stores in this area just Redboxes. A friend who a great store a few miles away gave it up in the early 00s after his computers crashed. He saw renting discs at that point as being in the buggy whip business.

"Hellboy" (2019) showed up UHD today. Now they list "Reserve" for UHD. What do they do, get a couple of discs then deliver it to the kiosk for pickup?

Has anyone tried the buy, watch, and sell on eBay model as near mint? Seems a good way to go once you set up your SOPs.

Looks like uhd reservations have come to the iPhone app.

There still is only one disc for me to rent. Which I have already rented.

Ya know I’m tempted to rent it again just to show Redbox I mean business...

So July 12th was the last update on release markets? And that was after a year of silence right?

Sigh.
