Roger That!

Oblivion was extremely well done and well balanced overall,
Before MMFR came along it was my number one replay bluray.

From what I read you have to link Vudu to DisneyMoviesAnywhere and then you can stream the bonus content from DMA. It seems to be the only way to get access to it. Now other services and no ability to download it.

Star Wars The Force Awakens Blu-ray audio limitation under-reported?

Did anyone else know the Blu-ray disk English audio is only in one format? 7.1?

I have a 5.1 system attached to my Acer projector/ps4 and was unable to hear dialogue.

The only other English option is 2.0 descriptive audio. The foreign languages are 5.1 just to troll me.

Now I have to either watch the crappy DVD or figure out how/if I can watch the digital download via a PS4.

Anyone get stung?

Thanks for the info and if what I wrote doesn't make sense, well, I'm not that up on sound.
TFA was clearly superior for bass (and sound in general IMO) vs San Andreas in my setup and the graphs above support this as well. TFA had MUCH better extension and variety. San Andreas is just LOUD with noticeably lacking extension (especially for massive earthquakes! ) and not enough bass variety.

I watched this last night, and while overall the videopresentation was very good, I found the audio mix to be a little...off. Several sounds either seemed to be missing entirely, or extremely muffled. A good example is the scene that was in several of the commercials in which an X-Wing is chasing down a TIE fighter over a lake. It's blasting away with its lasers, but there is no corresponding sound. It's all soundtrack and some background noise. Another one that stuck out was during the TIE escape in the beginning. Poe and Finn are shooting up the docking bay, and there were huge explosions occurring that barely made it through the speakers. On the other hand, other sounds were suitably impactful, like Han's blaster. It made me wonder if I have a defective disc in some way, or if this is simply how it's "supposed" to be.

Has anyone else observed the same?
I thought the exact same thing. Seemed to disappear half through the movie.

7.1 wil play back fine on a 5.1 system. The back surround audio will get mixed into your side surrounds. If dialog is weak, the problem is elsewhere.

A good way to test your Iris on your projector is on the Spears and Munsil disc. Go to Video processing then select Luminance Loading. Don't stare directly at the lens but on an angle and you can actually see the Iris at work.

Re-watched last night. After seeing it in 2D and 3D IMAX, this makes me want to go bigger and of course 4K.

It looked terrific, but for now I will stick with my 60VT60. This will certainly make me double-dip when it comes in UHD-BD.

I wached earlier this week and in the third scene wjen the pods were released from the ship, I heard a handful of POPs from a left rear speaker. I've got a Marantz 7010 with 5.1.4. Speakers are Monitor Silver 10's up front and Monit0r Silver 2's in the rear and Monitor's in the ceiling for Atmos.

I also played on another cheap 5.1 system in my house and at a friend's low end 7.1. There was no 'POP' on the other systems. This is the only time I've notices any problem with my 4 month old system. Do I have a speaker problem? Or should i just ignore it until it is replicated?

I have no sound coming from the surround channels. I've got a 5.1 set up. My Oppo bdp83se is configured to down mix to 5.1. I unplugged the front speakers from the receiver and left only the surrounds plugged in. I played the disc, and all I get is silence. I switched the disc out for a few other blu rays I own with 7.1 DTS MA tracks, and the surrounds come to life. Has anyone else had to exchange a defective disc yet?

I also got no dialogue via 5.1. Only effects. It's mind blowing only 7.1 is supported for the English on the bluray. What the hell?! Only 7.1 or 2.0 descriptive audio???? I had to watch the damn dvd.

Blows my mind that it's 7.1 only. No other options. I get no dialogue. So frustrating.

I don't have that problem and have never heard of this before I browsed this thread. I use a 5.1.2 system and dialog always comes through the center. I'd investigate how your player is outputting etc.

Does anyone know a scene with usage of the surrounds? Someone earlier mentioned they don't hear anything from the surround channels and I can't think of any particular scene where the surrounds would be prominent to do a thorough test at various volume levels.

Loved the sound in this movie, and the LFE really pounded my room. I think that the biggest and longest LFE scene with Kylo trying to get into Rey about Luke's location. My room door was shaking, as well as other things in my house. After the movie I asked the wife if the movie the girls and I watched was too loud, she replied I only felt the movie upstairs. This movie has excellent surround and agree with Toe, Bass was outstanding!

Opening battle with the stormtroopers shooting from screen to back of room, laser bolt frozen in mid air moves from front to sides and rear right as Poe passes it, Poe's ship explosion in rear as BB-8 watches.

Thanks I'll give that a listen. Perhaps at lower volume levels the surrounds get drowned out a bit. Most movies don't mix the surrounds as hot as the fronts which makes perfect sense but maybe they are somewhat inaudible at low volume.

I have the same issue with almost the same setup. I'm using an Oppo BDP83 (not SE though) configured to down mix to 5.1. I am getting no audio from either surround channel. Are you also using the Oppo's analog outputs? When I pop in my Disney WOW test disc without changing anything and play the channel finder it works fine (finds all channels). I posted the problem to the Oppo BDP83 owner's thread as well if you want to chime in there.

I also wonder if anyone else is using any bluray player with analog outputs with this disc and seeing any issues.

Thanks for the confirmation. It sounds like the common thing between Dragonbrewer and I is the Oppo BDP83.

Just for a test try telling the BDP83 not to downmix 7.1. Let your AVR or Pre-amp handle that duty based on what speakers you have connected. You mentioned that you have the player set to downmix to 5.1, remove that from the equation. Just pass the 7.1 signal through directly.

I'm not sure about the Oppo's configuration options and how it handles audio but it might be dropping out the surrounds and trying to play the rear surrounds which your AVR or amp etc isn't connected to.

Good suggestions. I actually already had chosen both ways (7.1 and 5.1) with the same result. I can't let the pre-amp handle it because it does not decode DTS-HD-MA (hence why I use the analog outputs). When I play the Disney WOW calibration disc's channel ID test, the 7.1 track actually announces both "Left Surround Rear Channel" and "Left Surround Side Channel" out of the same speaker. This should show that the Oppo is properly sending out the correct channels and it's not an equipment configuration problem.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Initial Blu-ray Release

Could you run HDMI to your pre amp and just have the player decode the audio to PCM or does your pre-amp predate HDMI?

They way things are set up, it would be a pain to swap, but I may give it a shot. I tested a few more movies and all have no issues. I can't imagine it's a disc issue, especially if someone else with the same player is having the same issue.
