Summer/Fall of next year, in the lead-up to Avatar 2. It will likely have the Dolby Cinema treatment, with Dolby Vision and Atmos.

Is this an update? As recently as January 4 2017 Bill Hunt @the Digital Bits lists the date as this year.

Quote:
The previous Apes films are obvious catalog choices too, and we know that Fox has been working on a new 4K master of James Cameron’s The Abyss. It’s due for Blu-ray release later this year and, like last year’s Independence Day, we’d be surprised if it wasn’t released in 4K as well.

Unless Bill comes out with an exact date and time or he reports something that lines up with my own information, I take whatever he says with a grain of salt. Fox almost always follows the industry standard practice of attaching catalog releases to new films that they - or others - have coming up in the cinemas or home video, if said films have some relation to whatever catalog titles they have been sitting on. In the case of The Abyss, it makes more sense that they will release it in the build-up period to Avatar 2 and they may also release the guaranteed money-maker Aliens on UHD-BD at the same time or when Avatar 2 hits home video. Just as we'll most likely get Predator on UHD-BD around the time the new Predator reboot hits cinemas or home video and Alien, when Alien: Covenant hits home video. That's the way the industry usually does things and they have worked that way for years. Also, the push to add Dolby Vision to UHD-BD means that Fox will have additional time to give Cameron for an Dolby Vision grading, which is the sort of thing Ole Jimbo is likely to jump for, especially if it means Fox can pump The Abyss back into premium cinemas for a limited engagement before Avatar 2 and tag an Avatar 2 exclusive look onto the pre-credits stuff.

I've been waiting for the release of the extended cut of The Abyss on Blu Ray for many years since it was first announced that it and 'True Lies' would be "coming soon". I am many years older since that first announcement.

Here is a dumb question....I have not moved to a UHD system as yet. If I purchase a UHD disc, will it play decently on my current system and OPPO BDP 103 player?

Steve Douglas, McIntosh 8207 amp, Anthem AVM-60, Anthem MCA 50 amp, Aerial Acoustics 10T, CC3 center, AA5 and SR3 dipole/bipole, 18"Velodyne Sub
Sony 85" 950G, 4 Paradigm Cinema 100 2.0 System and OPPO 203 Blu-ray deck

You need a UHD Blu-Ray player to play UHD discs (a true UHD player, not a regular blu-ray player that just upscales to UHD) but if you have one of those (or an Xbox One S) you can play UHD discs on non-UHD TVs, though obviously you'll only get 1080p (or whatever resolution your screen supports).

Much thanks for the quick reply.

Guess I will have to sell the OPPO and get a new OLED monitor plus a new amp to power the new Atmos speakers I will have to get plus a new divorce attorney to lower my alimony payments so I can afford all this.

With Bill Paxton's passing, will Cameron consider cobbling together a special edition of True Lies? I read an interview from him where he said he cut fifteen minutes from the movie to create the final release version. Certainly these scenes can be restored for an alternate version. Really curious about the cut material despite getting glimpses from trailers and detail descriptions from fan sources.

Any news on when the Abyss will be out on UHD Blu ray? I literally don't care how much it costs. It will be worth the price.

I guess that's what happens when money doesn't matter anymore. You can do what you want and forget about the path that took you there. In some ways, I get it. But throw a dog a bone, will ya?

When asked about Blu-ray plans for the films by TheArnoldFans.com, Cameron replied, "I’m working on that. The True Lies Blu-ray and the Abyss Blu-ray have sort of fallen off my to-do list, getting one, not two, but four Avatar sequels stood up and going. But now that that has happened, I can actually take care of business. So yes, that is coming."

While release dates and specs have not been announced yet, the director previously discussed preparations for The Abyss Blu-ray with Variety last year. At the time, Cameron said, "We've done a wet-gate 4K scan of the original negative, and it's going to look insanely good. We're going to do an authoring pass in the DI for Blu-ray and HDR at the same time."

And though nothing has been confirmed at this time, Cameron's mention of HDR implies that a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release could also be in the works. Currently, both The Abyss and True Lies are only available on DVD.

I must be looking at the quote different than some of you. It sounds like it's still moving forward, just not at the pace that some want. I'm sure there's just a bit more money involved with 4 Avatar sequels compared to 1 or 2 re-releases.

Any update on this? I would pay good money for just about any HD or above transfer of this movie. I really want my daughter to see it but there is no good transfer out there to show to her.
