Australia also has the non-anamorphic transfer as it typically uses the PAL UK/European transfer, I believe the R6 China DVD was the only anamorphic DVD release ever officially released but at least Australia got an anamorphic release of True Lies unlike the R1 US DVD.

I've never owned a copy of The Abyss, but what I watched numerous times over the years was the Region 1 (US) DVD that I borrowed. I actually remember watching this & the Region 1 True Lies (another borrowed DVD) back to back about 1 - 1 1/2 years ago.

I could swear that The Abyss print was larger & took up more screen room than the True Lies print - but, your point is taken that I could have had the setting on my TV modified so that The Abyss picture was bigger (though I don't know why I wouldn't have also done that for True Lies).

Don't have access to either of these DVD's at this point, so can't verify this now.

You could say the DVD release...

Well, Cameron has outlived his viability as a filmmaker, needs to give up the illusion that anyone is looking forward to more Avatar. I still enjoy the DVHS of True Lies, really miss The Abyss though.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Luckily the streamed version of True Lies on HBO via Amazon Prime is anamorphic, however, the quality leaves something to be desired.
