OMG, you just made my day! So SUPER EXCITED about this announcement. I can’t wait to watch this one with my kids. I hope for the UHD HDR version but the 1080p Blu ray will work just fine. Thanks for posting this.

Great news on The Abyss after all this time. I wonder if they are looking at remastering the audio as Atmos or DTS:X?

I pray this will truly happen. I've wanted a bluray of this forever. Maybe Oppo will have their 4K UHD universal player out by then and cross my fingers a 4K bluray w/HDR will be avalible.
But just a bluray would be wonderful.

I was actually being serious.

The movie came out almost 30 years ago now. The Laser disc came out over 20 years ago and we're at the 16 year mark for the crappy DVD release.

Plenty of s**t movies have had multiple releases on multiple formats in that time span. The Abyss is actually a good movie that fans of it have been begging for. For me, it's right up there with wanting a proper HD release of the original theatrical Star Wars.

It's the theatrical version on that channel. Probably ditto for the new scan as well. (But I hope it's the DC.)

As I recall, Cameron finished the Director's Cut on film, not video, and conformed the camera negative to that version of the movie. That's why the DC has a few jump-cuts, because frames were lost during the editing and couldn't be recovered digitally at the time. (This was explained in the booklet that came with the old Laserdisc).

That being the case, if the studio does a new 4k scan off the OCN, it should be the Director's Cut.

The HDTV airings of the theatrical cut were probably scanned from an internegative or interpositive struck before the Director's Cut was assembled.

With today's technology, I expect that Cameron will correct the jump-cuts by digitally sampling the before and after frames to recreate the missing frames.

Yup, I saw it at a local theatre before buying it on laserdisc.
