Uncovered: First Dolby Vision UHD Blu-ray Titles

FlatPanelsHD.com has confirmed the first Dolby Vision UHD Blu-ray titles. Here's hoping that more titles quickly follow.

Nice write up, Scott. But you get your news second hand instead of from your own forum?

Yep you found it only 11 mins after the original finder of this info on the blu-ray.com!

Interesting: HDR video by Dolby, immersive audio by DTS. I figured the first few titles would be a Dolby Vision + Dolby Atmos package deal. Nice to see them mixing it up.

im surprised it wasnt spotted sooner. it went unnoticed for a while I think.

I sent the information to some larger voices, who were able to get the info out to the masses. I did credit members of bluray.com to Vincent. Hopefully someone can get an official statement out of either Universal or Dolby.

Hey, it's a big forum; I can't be aware of all of it all the time! I get my news where I find it, when I find it. If anyone wants to alert me to a story like this, please do so by PM, or email me at [email protected]. I'd love to source things from the forum, especially since people here are always among the very first to catch wind of a cool story. Let's work together!

Would be nice if Universal or Dolby did those what do they call them in the old days...oh yes a press release. Scott can't be everywhere.

Am I the only one that feels the DV logo should have been plastered all over the Disc cover on the front like HDR usually is? Its THE format to get! Gonna be lame when ppl are trying to figure out if they are ordering a DV disc or just HDR10 at online shopping.

I brought this up in another forum. And I think they don't want to oversell Dolby Vision, for fear of risking average consumers not purchasing it because their home theaters are not Dolby Vision ready. It's somewhat the same reason why we don't see much fanfare with Dolby Atmos.

I wonder how many UHD players will be DV-capable by the title's release date? AFAIK, they're all still waiting for as-yet-unscheduled firmware updates.

Does this require two separate encodes for the video. One for HDR10 and one for DV? That might limit the size of the encode and result in a less desirable bit rate? I believe they have to do HDR10 and DV and any others are optional. It would be nice if they can do this without two separate encodings for the video. Anyone know about how that works?

Its not uncommon for them to release discs before the player that can play them is out/ready.

seems odd to start with animated titles, no? maybe they are the easiest to re-encode? but as far as getting any real benefit, seems like animated movies don't have any 'banding' anyway, so there's really nothing to improve unless they want to change colors for some reason?

at least they're starting somewhere i suppose

In addition to a separate encoding using up space will this also require the user to select the Dolby Vision encode (like picking the desired audio stream) for playback? I guess it will become clear eventually. EDIT: My fear would be rather than pay for a larger disc or even two discs they will lower the bit rate to fit both encodes on the same disc - diminishing the quality for both the HDR 10 and DV encode. Assuming it requires a separate encode - hopefully one encode can contain both HDR 10 and DV metadata? Anyone?

EDIT: Since DV uses 12 bit color and HDR 10 uses 10 I would think this will require a separate encode.

It must obviously be mastered for DV, but there is no need for a separate DV encode on disc, only the DV metadata. DV metadata acts as a supplement to existing HDR10 an SDR metadata layers. See this post:

All the best looking UHD movies I own are animated movies. Of course The Martian looks good and Revenant but for the sheer color pop and clarity Secret life of Pets and Lego movie look more "WOW" overall. I might have the pick these up even if my player doesn't support DV.

Oh you can add to that link that I believe all LG LCD UHD 2016 models support Dolby Vision as well not just the Super UHD models and up. I have the LG UHD 6350 and it supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

It's a single disc. It carries a supplementary stream to go from the HDR 10 base up to the full DV signal. However, there are a couple options for how they can encode the video and allocate bitrate depending on how they decide to optimize it. So just because one release does it one way, doesn't mean all releases will take the same approach. You'll have to wait and see.

Not sure where I read it, probably here, that the DV encoding layer is another 1080p video stream which gets blended with the 2160p stream as a difference encoding, and includes both the additional bits and the dynamic metadata. Remember that the difference between 12-bit and 10-bit is 20%, and the difference (in total bytes) of a 2160p and a 2160p + 1080p stream is 25%. So yeah, that works out mathematically. 5% headroom for the metadata, way more than enough.

I'm really happy we have DV titles coming out finally, but the Minions movies are such fun in 3D.

Are you referring to the Technicolor logo on the back? No. They just graded it. They grade a lot of movies. Their logo shows up on a lot of discs.

The actual Technicolor HDR system is not compatible with UHD Blu-ray.

The way I understand it, Dolby Vision is not about having two separate encodes. Just think of Hybrid 3D Blu-rays. When you want to watch in 2D, only the left eye stream is played back. If you play in 3D, both left and right is played back.

The right eye stream is also not a full image as well. The MVC just encodes the difference between the two eyes for storage efficiency.

Dolby Vision is somewhat similar, in concept. UHD BD will play back HDR10 by default. There is a Dolby Vision "layer" on top of the HDR10 encode and it will playback when compatible player and TV is detected.

I believe DV should fit well within a triple layer 99GB BD.

Has anyone considered this may be a typo? For example, I bought Interstellar immediately when it came out. Months later, I was in Best Buy and saw that the version they had on the shelves said "Dolby Atmos" on the back. Many of you know that this was a typo; Interstellar had no Atmos Blu-Ray release. I had a heated conversation with the manager until he finally relented and let me return the movie.

If they really are in DV, then I'll certainly pick up at least one of them. But I'd like to see Studio confirmation first.

No sir...what I said was that I bought a second copy because it said it had Atmos on it, whereas my original did not. When I discovered the second copy was mislabeled, I returned that. I still have Interstellar, and I love the movie. But I don't need two copies of the same film.

I just hope Universal doesn't F these UHD titles up. They have a habit of doing that.

Fast & Furious, Oblivion, Bourne Identity, etc. etc.

And let's not get started on the myriad of substandard catalog Blu-ray's they've released.
