Marvel Studios

Disney Official Announcement July 11

This is a Great movie. Love the character development. It will look fabulous, mind-blowing, tremendous, stupendous, phenomenal, remarkable, exceptional, astounding, amazing, fantastic, breathtaking, staggering, unimaginable, incredible, unbelievable, mind-boggling, mind-blowing, and jaw-dropping gorgeous in 4K.

I believe it will be the best selling 4K until a Star Wars Title is released.

According to James Gunn's facebook page, Guardians 2 will indeed be Disney's first 4k UHD disc next month. He also confirmed 3D will be available as well.

We will know by the end of the month. DV will get a huge push at CES 2018, so it's possible.

Disney won't do DV until the authoring tools and player compatibility are solid. That's their official response. The digital download version uses it because the encoding process for that was ahead of the disc version.

What I don't get is why does Amazon say this title is currently unavailable? No kidding it should be up for pre order.

As to the question some of you may be wanting an answer to, the reason there’s no Dolby Vision on the actual 4K Ultra HD disc for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is that Disney simply wasn’t ready (from a technical standpoint) to commit to it on this first title. It’s not unlike the situation with Fox and object-based audio on their early 4K titles; the studio wants to make sure the experience they offer on the disc works well, is bug-free, and provides the viewer with the best quality. Disney is still evaluating Dolby Vision for inclusion on their discs and does intend to do so as soon as possible. Privately (and separately, from other industry sources, not from Disney), we’ve heard that there are still some bugs with regard to authoring and encoding Dolby Vision on 4K discs that are being sorted out. As the authoring tool set improves, this will become a non-issue. Nevertheless, I had the chance to see demos of an actual Guardians 2 4K disc with HDR-10 playing on an LG flagship OLED 4K display (via the Oppo UDP-203) and, rest assured, it looks flat-out spectacular. In the meantime, I’ve learned from Disney that the VUDU digital 4K version of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will have Dolby Vision for those who want to experience it that way.
So Disney can't figure out how to author discs with Dolby Vision, but had no issues releasing it in theaters or on VUDU in Dolby Vision? Umm...

Amazon is having a another contract feud with Disney, and won't allow preorders on any of its video titles. Unless this is cleared up sooner, the disc will open up for sale on street date.

Authoring Dolby Vision for Blu-ray is a completely separate process than doing a Dolby Vision grade for cinema or home. And currently there is only one production facility doing all the DV Blu-ray releases.

The DCP sent to theaters is inherently different than the home releases as far as content is concerned, yes, but the DV metadata for VUDU versus disc should be identical. They both end up using the same HEVC encode, albeit vastly different bit rates. So what makes pressing a disc with DV so special? (I'm not being difficult, I really want to know.)

It isn't the mastering to DV, it is the authoring to disc. The tools are rather new and the resources available very limited. So there are growing pains and scheduling backlogs. As more authoring houses come on line I'm sure we'll see a lot more.

Interesting dilemma on Guardians 2 4K UHD release:

For around $30 plus tax, you can get the combo pack with HDR10 encoded 4K blu ray, standard blu ray disc, and digital download for HDX quality (presumably not UHD). For another $5 you can get the combo pack with the 3D blu ray. HOWEVER, the Dolby Vision 4K UHD is available on Vudu for $25 right now (no sales tax). From the director's comments, the Dolby Vision version is the definitive version to get.

I have always been a "disc" guy. I've never preferred digital download to having the disc. For the first time I purchased the digital download rather than wait two weeks for the disc. I was swayed by the appeal of Dolby Vision.

I watched it last night. It was gorgeous on my Vizio P65-C1. However, my internet connection is not quite good enough to get through the entire movie in 4K UHD without pausing. In fact, it switched to standard HDX 1080p at one point. The lack of resolution and HDR was immediately apparent! I had to reboot the stream to get back to Dolby Vision.

At this point I wish I had waited for the 4K UHD disc in HDR10. It may be technically inferior to the DV version, but at least my internet connection wouldn't hinder the viewing experience. I guess all this points to one thing: we need Dolby Vision encoded discs!!!

DV's two layer system is unique. The HDR10 base layer gets combined with the DV enhancement layer to create the DV movie. It's not like there are two separate encodes on the disc. So new tools had to be created to author this new system to disc.

When the bitrates are different, it's a different encode.

Buy the disc and sell the digital code to offset the loss on buying the digital download.

it's a shame that there's no DV on the disc but.... what is there is so beautiful that you will forget all about it and just fall into the universe of colours in front of you (i swear there are colours there that iv'e never seen before it's that good!)

For years I used to throw all those digital codes in the recycling bin, but there is a market for selling them that's for sure. Same with selling the Blu-Ray.

gardians of galaxy which one to get?

So,

Im in a bit of a toss up.

Looking at getting gardians of the galaxy vol 2, and i wanted it with dolby vision for my oledc6... anyways it appears its only available on vudu with dolby vision.

Has anyone seen anything comparing the uhd disk with the hdr10 to the dolby vision on vudu? I want to get the best picture quality version, but im not sure if dolby vision on vudu would be better than hdr10 on a disk due to it being from the internet.

Thanks,
Brian

I'm torn on this. To date I have only purchased UHD Blu-ray discs featuring 4K+ scans or 4K DIs - no upscales. It's my own dumb form of protest. However, I really want to encourage Marvel/Disney to get on board. Those of you that have purchased the disc - is it worth the upgrade over 1080p Blu-ray?

Got the disk in the mail today. The BB Steelbook with UHD 4K, 3D, Bluray, etc... Was watching the UHD 4K and ran into horrible pixelization and picture freezes in chapters 10 and 11, which were unwatchable. All was good in the chapters before and after those.
This is the first UHD 4K disk, out of ~35 I own, that has shown this behavior on my Panny UB900.
I'm highly confident it isn't due to the rest of my signal chain, which is UB900>Linker>Marantz AV7702MkII>JVC DLA-RS600U, using qualified cables throughout, with one long run with a Ruipro 33 ft fibre optic cable from Marantz to JVC.
I am hoping/assuming it is just a bad disk.
Anyone else have similar problems with playback of this disk? I am planning on returning it to BB for replacement.
Thanks
Mike

this is Disney's first UHD release, sure hope they didn't mess up the transfer. haven't seen any other complaints yet of the UHD playback

in terms of which version to get, as of this morning, I was able to order the Best Buy uhd/3d steelbook combo for in-store pickup, I'm going to pick up after work today. the 3D disc is exclusive to this combo, if you watch 3D movies
