"In memoriam: All the best tech that died in the 2010s" - Simon Hill, Digital Trends, December 29, 2019

DVDs — Rentals, Blockbuster, and Players: We used to proudly display our shiny disc collections of films and TV shows, but it’s becoming rare to see DVDs in modern living rooms....Blu-Ray and UHD discs have failed to catch on in the way that DVDs did. If you have a fast enough internet connection, there’s very little reason to buy physical discs anymore and sales of all formats have dropped more than 50% in the last five years, according to the Motion Picture Association.

A cowardly epilogue from writer Simon--"We’d ask you to leave your own suggestions, but the early promise of an intelligent conversation between reader and author was crushed when the ability to leave opinions, or just plain insults, anonymously precipitated a flood of trolling and led many publications, including this one, to scrap online commenting altogether."

I think perhaps if you had a business that welcomed online comments you would find his post pragmatic not cowardly. It is a time when what used to be called liable and slander not to mention even extortion is just called normal.

Great-ish news, always tempered by the idiocy of retailer exclusives to one of the worst things to ever happen to any release. Let's limit the availability of an item... I wonder how many copies of Shaft on UHD they sold, compared to if it had been a proper release, so available to people outside of the ability to buy from best buy.

I just can't fathom the mindset to go down that path. Do they sit in a meeting and say "how can we limit the amount of copies we can sell, and limit our profit?"

No pratty writer/editorial comment was needed.
