Picture only?

I don't own everything y'all own, so like no Samsara on my list.

- Skyfall
- The Hateful Eight
- The Ring

Best 3D release:

- Titanic

Best IMAX presentation:

- Dunkirk

Oblivion is one of the best looking ones I rented, but I don't own it.

There’s a PQ tier thread sticky. Just look for anything in tier 0

Or or... since that list is outdated as **** considering none of the five movies I mentioned are anywhere on any tier, people can also just respond to this thread as well. Since you haven't closed it, I guess you're still leaving it open for others to do that, which I admire... plus you're right, he can look at that list as well. It's just not the end-all/be-all if it ain't very recent, is all.

We wouldn't need any other thread in this sub-forum regarding PQ otherwise, I'd just point them to that thread.

Discussion is alive and well in the PQ Tiers thread. It's true the list itself hasn't been updated at the top in a couple of years, but the rise of UHD has made it difficult differentiating the very best discs for PQ.

Anyway, most seem to rank Transformers: The Last Knight as the UHD with the most A/V appeal.

Honestly its pretty simple and the answer is the same.

Blu Ray - Planet Earth
UHD - Planet Earth II

Both of those are almost the defacto standard in their respective resolutions. you might find other movies that more suit your tastes movie wise, but for sheer quality of picture it's VERY hard to beat those.

I really enjoy the picture quality when watching these 3 on my 4k projector:

Alita Battle Angel
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
The Avengers

Runner ups:
Oblivion
Transformers Last Knight
The Great Wall

EDIT: Just added BladeRunner 2049 4K disc to my collection and wow, that is a reference quality disc!

Can't do three because of many challenges presented to filmmakers in collaborative effort. Re "picture quality" we could give all the glory to the cinematographer, but what good is "picture quality" if the film fails to communicate and extract emotion?

No particular order:

Skyfall (BD); Harry Potter 8-film box (4K); Gladiator (DVD); Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (BD); The Revenant (BD); Sicario (BD); Sicario: Day of the Soldado (4K); The Greatest Showman (4K); Murder on the Orient Express (4K); Bohemian Rhapsody (4K); Black Hawk Down (BD); Lawrence of Arabia (BD); Titanic (BD); The Remains of the Day (BD); The Hateful Eight (BD); John Wick (BD); John Wick 2 (BD); The Dark Knight (DVD); Godfather Trilogy (DVD); Cabaret (DVD); Chinatown (BD); Apocalypse Now (BD); American Beauty (BD); Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (4K); Dunkirk (BD); Mad Max: Fury Road (BD); Life of PI (BD).

I have the UHD version and it is amazing. Both PQ and SQ top notch. It made me swivel my head several times and had uncountable flash backs of the good kind. Reminded me of the incredible amount of danger we were completely accustomed and numb to. Death or dismemberment was but one step in any direction and we carried on like it was some kind of game!

In terms of pure resolution, I think the Cliffhanger 4K disc is the still the best looking picture I’ve ever seen. Blade Runner 2049 (4k) & Sicario (4k) are both up there for resolution. Though I still use Lucy (4k) and Passengers (4k) to show off my room. Passengers has none of the limitations we sometimes get with UHD content on our 4K projectors. It looks like it was graded for a PJ.

What is best test 4K disc?

I have a 4k Panasonic UB420 player. I have been renting 4K discs but have been underwhelmed on the difference between 4k and HD. So I would like to buy a 4k disc that I can use as a test bed for figuring out why I'm missing the supposed increased video quality. So I'm looking for a disc that is considered the best video 4k quality and that I can enjoy watching the story from time to time. I have a JVC X790 projector with a 106" screen.

How far do you sit from the screen? If you sit fairly far away, it may be hard to differentiate a quality 1080p source from a 4K source on a 4K screen.

About 9-10 feet. I can definitely see the difference when streaming.

In the meantime. I did find a Ralph Potts thread where he ranks 4k discs for A/V quality. I ordered Bohemian Rhapsody as I liked the movie and he gave the disc a 97.

Probably the biggest immediate difference you'll see is in the HDR highlights - color depth that ordinary 1080P video on Blu-ray isn't capable of reaching.

Check something like Blade Runner 2049's UHD. Aquaman UHD is another example of top-notch PQ that should leave you dazzled.

I rented Aquaman and it didn't look right.

I have Directv and their 4K channel, 104, looks great with HLG(HDR).

For projector use and possible additional advantages, have you looked into Panasonic UB820?

I think the best disc as far as image quality goes is still Planet Earth 2, the first was pretty much the defacto standard for picture quality on BluRay and the second certainly is on UHD

Just rediscovered this forum!

I'm still very much in 1080p land, and haven't seen any UHD yet. So these are some of my favorite 2k Blu-rays for image quality. Also, there are still alot of movies I have not seen on Blu-ray or HD, including many of the recent super-hero movies.

A few more than three. Sorry about that.

RECENT - CAPTURED ON FILM:

AVP (2004)

Jurassic Park III (2001)

Lord of the Rings (2001-2003)

Predators (2010)

Quantum of Solace (2008)
This gets a little monochromatic in the 2nd half. But is otherwise quite good.

Snow White & the Huntsman (2012)

Spectre (2015)

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

Wrath of the Titans (2012)

RECENT - CAPTURED DIGITALLY:

Valerian (2017)
Only watched this once so far, and fell asleep during alot of it. So I'm not sure I actually like the movie yet. Alot of eye-candy though fwiw (from the few bits I saw while awake).

Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)
Color is sort of monochromatic, favoring blues and greens. But detail is very good.

Pride & Prejudice & Zombies (2016)
Very nice contrast, color, and detail for a digital feature. Reminds me of some older films.

CATALOG TITLES - CAPTURED ON FILM:

At the Earth's Core (1976)

Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
In glorious black & white.

The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973)

Independence Day (1996) (remastered edition)
This is almost in a class by itself for detail, except for some of the scenes involving pyrotechnics, which are a little soft looking.

The Nutty Professor (1963)

The World Is Not Enough (1999)

CATALOG TITLES - HAMMER HORROR:

Dracula: Prince of Darkness (1966)
Not perfect. But a fairly substantial upgrade from the letterboxed DVD. Sound is quite shrill unfortunately.

Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969)

The Kiss of the Vampire (1963)
This is on the brighter, contrastier side, but otherwise good.

Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970)
Adult content.

The Vampire Lovers (1970)
Adult content.

All the above should upscale quite well to 4k. I recently picked up a couple more Blu-rays used, which could also be potential candidates, including Justice League and Rampage. And will augment the above list as necessary.

@JackB, I have a JVC RS420 on a 115" screen with a panny 820, and Aquaman looked outstanding. You have the 540, and are underwhelmed? Are you using the Optimizer to adjust wile viewing your 4K discs?

You are correct in your statement. I have not had the 540 calibrated and haven't really worked at figuring out how all of these fine points of adjustments are done. My first look at the UB420 Optimizer was "What the hell? What do I do to which slider?" I now own a UHD disk, Bohemian Rhapsody, and plan to work at it. I know it's there. Some stuff I watch on Netflix looks really great. A lot of other stuff, not so great.
