Sony on June 16th will release a box set (with book) called Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD volume one. It will include Dr.Strangelove, Gandi, Mr Smith goes to Washington, Jerry Maguire, A League of Their Own and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA!!!

Haven't heard if they will be sold individually.

Interestingly I had never seen Lawrence until Kaleidescape released it in 4K two years ago or so. Will be interesting to see how it can be presented with an HDR pass now since the Kaleidescape version is SDR but still looks spectacular.

I'm hoping these movies will be available individually, because I'm sure this box set has a double take price. Still, they claim they are only making 8,000 sets so I think they will sell.

I have the 50th Anniversay box set of LOA for the discs and I waited till they dropped in price (it took awhile). There is 4K streaming available for this title. The Columbia Collection is strange assortment considering a lot of people are not fans of all of the films. I think some of the sets will be snapped up by people trying to resell them when they go out of print.

An odd collection of titles for sure. I'd like to have LOA, but this collection is a pass for me.

Talking

The Columbia Classic Collection wasn't even on my radar because I was expecting it to be $150 or more in Canada
...it showed up on BestBuy.ca early this morning for just $99 CAD , (about $71 USD after exchange)

SOLD!

Any chance LOA will be available separately at some point? No effing way I’m buying that box set.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

There are several discs crammed into the Lawrence of Arabia box and the first UHD for the first part of the movie was on the bottom. I was worried they had accidentally gave me a conventional Blu-ray disc. Whew!

All the reviews are spot on regarding the UHD disc, it's a home run PQ wise. I watched the first half last night via my JVC RS540 and it looks spectacular. The usage of HDR here is very well done and not overly brightened. Another great job by Sony!

I was planning on waiting for a rainy weekend for the epic 4 hour flick on the JVC at 120"
...but curiosity was killing me, loaded up and watched the first couple chapters on my 65" OLED with Dolby Vision

My jaw is on the floor over just how stunning this looks!

Well, UHD is mostly a waste for Dr. Strangelove. The print is so soft that it's effectively identical to the Blu-ray but the film grain looks more natural so if you like film grain then you'll want this.

The beginning of A League of Their Own was clearly shot with a lot of diffusion (probably because of the age of the actresses), but when you get to main story set in 1943 then you're seeing something better than the Blu-ray.

Of course Lawrence of Arabia and Gandhi looked fabulous in UHD. I was able to stick my face right up to the screen. Incredible that both needed two 66GB discs.

It's just a plot to make sure we really take an intermission between parts one and two. No fast forwarding allowed.

I don't like that they put the intermission at the beginning of the 2nd disc rather than the end of the 1st disc. Most people are going to take a break anyway while they switch discs. When you pop in the 2nd disc you are ready to start watching except now you have to wait another 5 minutes. There isn't even a chapter skip for it.

As you might expect Mr. Smith Goes to Washington isn't exactly prime UHD material. The only advantage I saw was that every speck of grain is preserved, and prints from this era almost always have a fog of grain.

As for Jerry McGuire, most scenes have that extra bit of detail that jumps out that you don't get on the Blu-ray, but what I notice most is how uneven the film looks. There are some bits that even look soft on the Blu-ray, but the UHD disc makes them even more jarring. Of course the thing you saw projected in your movie theater was four or five generations away from what's on the UHD disc so I doubt they cared much about how sharp every scene looked back then because no one in the theater could even tell.

And of course you get full film grain in every frame.
