Re: Peak bitrates and whether >48Mbps video is possible, stats for Cast Away. I can't speak to how DGAVCIndex calculates this but the Doom9 forums may say.

The author, neuron2, explained this in response to someone else's query:
Quote:
Every 30 coded frames this occurs:

1. Adjust number of coded frames to the number of displayed frames by adding as needed for frame or field repeats seen during that time.

2. Calculate the time for those as (displayed frames / frame rate).

3. Calculate the video data rate as:

rate = bytes_delivered * 8.0 / time / 1024000.0;

4. Print the highest rate seen since start of decoding as the max bitrate.

Maybe someone else can explain how this affects the numbers.

Cinema Squid- Point Break took 9:36 to scan, while In the Line of Fire took 30:37 from the same hard drive. The only difference I see between ITLOF and the others I have tried is the multiple TrueHD tracks. When I scanned Spiderwick again it took the 10 mins. I think multiple lossless tracks slow it down. This was with v.0.3.1 .

I've noticed this too and it does seem like discs with TrueHD tracks might be taking longer for some reason. The only thing major difference that I can think of as a culprit would be a small section of code that gets run repeatedly as the average bitrate is updated to take out the core AC3 bytes. I'd be surprised if that was the cause, but you never know because it happens a lot (at each presentation timestamp increment).

I've noticed this too and it does seem like discs with TrueHD tracks might be taking longer for some reason.

Cinema Squid,

How do you calculate the audio bit rate ? Do you scan the entire disc for every audio track or you spawn multiple threads to do the scanning concurrently ? Please educate.

Buddies with BD Drives,

Could you please scan The Descent Blu-ray and check if the Rated & Unrated Versions are really AVC encoded ?

It would be great if you can perform the scan using PowerDVD, DGAVCIndex and BDInfo.

Some interesting discussion is going on here. Check from post #15.

Perhaps the BD has extra audio/subtitle tracks not present on the HD DVD to account for the size difference? Warner has been known to put on more of these for the BD port and I have vague memories of this very same discussion regarding V for Vendetta.

Here is a (hopefully not too long-winded, but reasonably thorough) overview of the current BDInfo scanning/calculation process:

There are three types of files involved in the process: the MPLS "playlist" files, the CLPI "clip info" files and the M2TS "MPEG transport streams" and it's worth talking about their structure first to make the process clearer.

Each MPLS file represents a single playable item (a movie, television episode, featurette, trailer, etc.) and serves as a table of contents for that item to the playback device. The MPLS contains a list of M2TS files arranged in playback order along with time stamps specifying the in/out times of each M2TS. There is also an ordered list of chapter markers in the MPLS and each marker is specified as an M2TS index and the time offset within it (so the overall chapter time stamp is determined by calculating the overall start time of the M2TS according the playlist order and then adding the offset of the marker). While many MPLS only reference a single M2TS file, some reference more than one if the item is broken into multiple M2TS files and a given M2TS may be referenced by multiple MPLS. This is how seamless branching and other operation such as "play all episodes" or "play all deleted scenes" are performed: i.e. different playlists specifying different orderings of M2TS files.

Each M2TS file also has a corresponding CLPI "clip info" file that serves as a simple table of contents to the streams contained within the M2TS - i.e. video, audio and graphics tracks. Each stream is given a unique four-digit "PID" (packet identifier) and a stream type identifier that indicates the codec of the stream. Depending on the stream type, there is a little bit of additional information supplied that can be used to populate the display/menus of the playback device. Video tracks also have their resolution (1080p, etc.), framerate (23.976, 29.97, etc.) and basic aspect ratio (4:3, 16:9) listed. Audio tracks have their basic channel layout (Mono, Stereo, Multi - kind of useless), sampling rate (48/96/192) and language code (English/Spanish/etc.). Presentation and interactive graphics tracks (i.e. subtitles and non-Java menus) also have a language code. All of this information is also redundantly stored in the MPLS files, but it can be a little more convenient to read it from the CLPI files.

The M2TS files themselves are the real meat and potatoes of things and contain all the video, audio and graphics data. Structurally, the M2TS is laid out as a sequence of 192 byte packets (chunks of data). Each packet has a 4-byte synchronization header (an addition over the old-style .TS file) followed by the normal 188-byte MPEG transport stream packet data (for more information, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG_transport_stream). The important point is that each data packet is assigned to a specific stream through the packet identifier (PID) and there are a number of flags indicating what should be done with the data inside the packet. For BDInfo, there are a few critical pieces of information. Video and audio streams have a codec-independent generic PES (program elementary stream) header that is contained within the packet data. This header is used to increment the presentation/display time stamps for each stream (since they are all potentially running at different rates and the packets from all streams are jumbled together in an interleaved fashion) and also to indicate the number of bytes of actual stream data that is expected to follow, spread across multiple subsequent packets, when a new chunk of data "payload" begins (i.e. a single video frame or a set of audio frame samples).

--------

With all that said, here is the sequence of events inside BDInfo:

After clicking the Browse button and selecting a disc/folder, BDInfo locates the BDMV folder and recursively calculates the total folder size of BDMV's parent (i.e. one level above BDMV) - this sum is given as the disc size. It looks for the presence of a BDSVM (or SLYVM) folder - if found, the disc is marked as BD+. It looks for the BDJO folder and if any .BDJO files are in this folder, then the disc is marked as having BD-Java. This is the highly sophisticated BD+ and BD-Java detection algorithm!

BDInfo then reads in and fully parses all of the MPLS files in the PLAYLIST folder. For each playlist, the list of referenced M2TS files are stored, the playlist M2TS time offsets are used to calculate the playlist length and the file sizes of the constituent M2TS files are added together as the playlist size - these numbers show up as the movie length and size respectively in the final report. For each referenced M2TS, the corresponding CLPI file is then read and parsed to create a master list of streams for the playlist with the PID, stream type/codec, and basic stream attributes stored.

The final (and most time-consuming) step in the Browse process is to open and read each unique M2TS referenced by all of the playlists. Packets are read from each M2TS until a codec-specific header is found for each video and audio stream in the M2TS - i.e. processing of the M2TS stops once all the streams have their extra information filled in. Separate routines for AVC, MPEG-2, VC-1, AC3, DTS, TrueHD, DTS-HD and LPCM process this header information to update the stream descriptions with additional information not found in the CLPI such as the exact channel count, bit depth, core AC3/DTS stream info for TrueHD/DTS-HD, and constant bitrate values for AC3/DTS/LPCM. Any discrepancies found for the video stream's resolution and frame rate replace the information from the CLPI.

At this point, hopefully only a few seconds have passed and BDInfo is sitting idle with the playlists, files and streams displayed. The fun begins when the scan bitrates button is clicked. A unique list of M2TS is built based on the checked items in the "Select Playlist(s)" box or, if no items are checked, all of the referenced M2TS are added to the list - in either case, each M2TS is only added to the list once so it doesn't get scanned multiple times. The bitrate scanner then opens the M2TS files one at a time and reads the entire file in 16KB chunks. After each chunk is read into memory, it is then processed to break it up into individual packets to increment the packet counts and byte counts for each stream PID.

Getting the payload byte count is essentially a process of boiling away the M2TS packet and stream header overhead to get the raw data bytes for each stream. This is done in a codec-independent manner using the PES headers. Also, increments of the presentation/display time stamps for each stream are located and the stream bitrate is recalculated at each time stamp increment (with the final bitrate for the M2TS stream coming from the last increment). For playlists with multiple M2TS, both the running and final bitrates are calculated by dividing the sum total data payload bytes for each stream across all M2TS divided by the total duration of all the M2TS (or in the case of the running bitrate the total duration of all processed M2TS + the PTS location of the M2TS currently being scanned). You can enable the stream diagnostics checkbox and click the View Report button while the scan is running to get an incremental snapshot of the scan progress for each stream.

All of this is done in a single-threaded manner one M2TS file at a time, although the file I/O is backed by a double-buffer and there is a separate user interface thread with a timer that fires once a second while scanning to update the incremental bitrate display on the screen. Putting in multiple reader threads might work well for scanning a disc layout on the hard-drive, although I suspect would be disastrous when reading from a BD-ROM drive. Also, some care would have to be taken when dividing up a single M2TS into multiple pieces to make sure the cuts are not only along packet boundaries but also at payload start boundaries.

Interesting info there, Cinema Squid, thanks. You may like to know that BDInfo was added to videohelp.com and digital-digest.com today.

I found something today that I hadn't heard of before: BD region codes can apparently have an expiration option if the distributor chooses.

Source: http://www.freepatentsonline.com/70162711.html
Quote:

If the fixed-date information exists in the recording medium 10 , the control unit decides whether the limited time corresponding to the region/county designated to the data record/reproduction apparatus 20 has expired based on the fixed-date information (S 44 ). Namely, the recording medium 10 includes a data after which reproduction is permitted regardless of the regional codes in the recording medium 10 and the record/reproduction apparatus 20 match. In this case, the control unit 202 can use a separate date/time secured clock or a Local_date field of PSR20 to decide whether the corresponding limited time included in the fixed-date information read from the recording medium 10 has expired.

In the date/time secured clock, a user or application program is unable to change a date or time. Instead, a date or time of the date/time secured clock can be set/changed based on official time information carried by a broadcast or GPS signal. In case of the Local_date field, it is updated using the official time information. Since the user or application program is unable to change a date or time of the separate secured clock, the control unit 204 can correctly decide whether the corresponding limited time has expired.

If the limited time has expired, the control unit 202 performs the playback according to the user's command even if a match between regional codes in the recording medium 10 and the record/reproduction apparatus 20 does not exist (S 43 ). If the limited time has not expired, the control unit 202 displays a warning message (S 45 ).

Thanks for the detailed explanation Cinema Whale.

I will have to read your notes multiple times to get a vague understanding of the disc structure.

Can anyone scan The Descent BD to find out if it's MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 encoded ?

I hesitate to post this, but piracy can be used for the power of good sometimes. No, I didn't download it - in fact I can't - but here's an NFO file stating AVC.

From the looks of that NFO, some converted it to h.264 from something else. Which could be anything?
Not trying to be rude, but this info doesn't look to be too helpful.

h.264 (untouched video) - I'm guessing by this he just means that the video is lossless-ish. Because this thread lists the video size as 20+ gigs.

Ridiculous codec tier sig gone. Still AVC/24bit lossless fanboy.

Well first of all I didn't even check to see if it was on the list already since lgans was asking for it. Now I'm not sure what he was wanting since it's already listed as AVC... Someone to confirm an MPEG-2 copy rather than posting more AVC scans of it?

The NFO specifically states that he didn't re-encode, but rather remuxed from M2TS to MKV. "Untouched" means just that; the video portion of the file is just copied off of the disc. The "movie size" you're looking at in the list includes the 6Mbps LPCM track, other audio, etc. If you multiply AVBR by the runtime you get 15.75GB for the Unrated cut's video track.

msgohan,

I want you or our buddies with BD Drives to scan through their BD copy of Descent in BDInfo or PowerDVD and check if the Rated and Unrated features are encoded using MPEG-4 and NOT MPEG-2. The copy which I received from amazon day before yesterday is MPEG-2 encoded. Please help.

Well benes already has it scanned as Rated AVC/Unrated AVC/PiP MPEG-2 using whatever tools he used to use. That CtrlHD pirate also confirms it as AVC. I might be able to rent it, but it seems like scanning your copy would be the best way to see whether there really is an MPEG-2 disc. I'm sure one of us would be happy to scan it if you sent us the disc. Or I can help you use the PS3 ripper OS I mentioned before.

That should be possible. FWIW I've heard that the AC3 frames have a different DontRememberTheExactThingItWasSomeKindOfID compared to the TrueHD frames in the PES packets. So it should be really easy to separate them.

I have The Decent and can 'take a look' at it over the weekend.

BTW there are only two encodes on the disc - the unrated is seamlessly branched into the normal version of the movie.

Back to the topic, I wonder why Fox is switching to TrueHD?? Right after we get the update to decode it in our PS3's...

Thanks! lgans316 introduced me to this thread and asked if I could scan these releases and post the data here I had not been following this thread before yesterday.

I do have some Japanese, Korean and Hong Kong BD releases and some European imports and I'm always after the most interesting new ones so I can start to contribute more especially when I get something new and fresh

Yeah, I'm actually not so happy that Fox is switching to TrueHD as I enjoy the quality of the DTS core tracks on my optical output based somewhat limited audio setup.

HD DVD: 387 (new: Taking Lives ; list)
Blu-ray: 262 (new: North Face (UK) ; list)
HD DVD-R: 262 (new: Charlie Wilson's War ; list)

Sorry, but 640k DD > DTS @1536 (for those of you about to jump on this STOP COMPARING THE 448kbps DVD DD tracks! I'm talking about DD at full bitrate!)

Second: those of us in apartments appreciate TrueHD's (& DD's) dynamic range control aka night mode. Clear lossless sound without the neighbors petitioning for your eviction.

Third: TrueHD tracks have no pops from pause nor pops that can damage certain setups (despite the DSP firmware fixes, there's thousands of people unaware that there are fixes and are in danger of damage).

Fourth: No encoding screwups like on Die Hard 2 or 7.1 issues with numerous New Line discs.

My opinions do not reflect the policies of my company

Peter,

I would like some evidence that 640kbps DD is better than DTS at over twice the bitrate, especially since DTS maintains lossless where it can at that bitrate.

I am not saying it is not true, but I find it hard to believe myself and all I ever seem to see you doing anywhere is bashing DTS... so please provide some evidence to back up your claims.

Back to purpose - The Descent is measuring as AVC for the main encode and MPEG2 for the alternate picture in picture version, just as Benes' list indicates.

I will post the full reports later.

The difference between the main and alternate looks to be minimal since it is a branch for an alternate ending so I will probably not scan that version unless there is specific interest. It is of course also AVC.

Two can play this game.

Please provide evidence that it is NOT, on the exact same movies, same mixes, level matched.

To put it in video terms: MPEG4 vs MPEG2, I guess MPEG2 is better since it requires a higher bitrate?

When are you guys going to get it that DD is more efficient than DTS, there is no roll off of higher frequencies (starting @ 17kHz) for DD @448 like there is for DTS @768. If DTS was TRULY better it would sound BETTER than DD at lower bitrates!

As for "bashing": there's a "find more posts by..." option here. You will find VERY little "bashing" by me other than when DTS fanboys come out of the woodwork and spread FUD about DD or TrueHD.

My opinions do not reflect the policies of my company
