Personally at least half of the posts I have seen from you have been DTS bashing in one form or another, and often of your accord... that is just my observation.

Reminds me a lot of when Amir tried to convince us that somehow VC-1 was magically better than AVC...

However, if you look at August rush mentioned about you can see that the average bitrate of the lossless compression is 1611 kbps - one could easily imagine that a descent percentage of the film sound track could be encoded in 1500 kbps given this average - which I imagine would be closer to the master than a 640 kbps DD encode...

But what would I know...

Again, please explain why DTS is less efficient or at least give us some background reading...

Second: those of us in apartments appreciate TrueHD's (& DD's) dynamic range control aka night mode. Clear lossless sound without the neighbors petitioning for your eviction.

Third: TrueHD tracks have no pops from pause nor pops that can damage certain setups (despite the DSP firmware fixes, there's thousands of people unaware that there are fixes and are in danger of damage).

Fourth: No encoding screwups like on Die Hard 2 or 7.1 issues with numerous New Line discs.

Fox used 448 kbps DD on Night Watch and 640 kbps on Day Watch so it's not necessarily an improvement over 1.5 mbps DTS core overall even if it were true that 640 kbps DD were better than 1.5 mbps DTS as you say.

I was commenting from the point of view of Fox switching from DTS HD MA to TrueHD and the audio options for optical output in either case and from my personal experience & preference, nothing else.

640k DD tracks don't typically sound better than 1.5 mbps DTS tracks in my setup based on my ears. It's the other way around in general, again based on my personal experience only.

HD DVD: 387 (new: Taking Lives ; list)
Blu-ray: 262 (new: North Face (UK) ; list)
HD DVD-R: 262 (new: Charlie Wilson's War ; list)

Don't mistake the mix for the codec.

Cloverfield on DVD in plain compressed lossy DD @448kbps beats the pants off of BD DTS-HD MA tracks like Hoosiers, RoboCop & The Fly.

Does that mean DD is superior to lossless?

Of course not. You can't compare codecs unless it's the exact same material, at the exact same volume.

Also, far more consumer devices support TrueHD decoding.

My opinions do not reflect the policies of my company

Well, I work for a living and there's a handy search function in the forum. Feel free to email/PM Roger Dressler of Dolby. AFAIK DTS has never bothered to defend their claims on a forum such as this.

As I pointed out, use the "find more posts by" function and you will see that this is hyperbole.

Depends on the bitrate, and if AVC's loop filter which can act as a grain NR tool, which I believe that is at the heart of the controversy over discs like Patton. Transformers on BD will be VC-1 and according to insiders looks better.

But DTS Coherent Acoustics does not compress in the same way that AC-3 does, so it's not that simple as a comparison of bitrates. Again, I point out that even DTS admits their CAC codec starts to roll off frequencies @754 kbps, something that doesn't happen to Dolby Digital until 384kbps or lower.

Would it really kill you to give us even a single link that backs up your claims?

Claims which on the surface appear to go against both common sense and people's general experiences it would seem?

Do you think that Transformers looks bad on HD DVD?

Do you think that the Blu-ray will have the same bitrate as the HD DVD?

This is the kind of information I was looking for - thanks - it is a good start.

I fully understand that different movies have different mixes and I'm not comparing just one movie to another movie. I have just been more impressed with many DTS core tracks in general after watching a whole lot of movies on HD DVD and BD with various lossy audio options available on those discs and I have then learned what to expect from DTS at 1.5 mbps and DD at 640 kbps in my setup as a kind of general experience over a lot of different discs. There aren't so many discs that include both 1.5 DTS track and 640 kbps DD track so comparing the 2 with the same exact mix is not often feasible.

I'm not claiming to have made any scientific comparisons or studies, I just stated a personal feeling about DTS at 1.5 mbps compared to DD tracks available on TrueHD discs. It wasn't even the main topic on my posts either, just a sidenote.

Anyway, I don't want to derail this thread too much into this argument so I won't be posting any more about this DTS vs. DD topic. I'll post again on this thread with some more disc scans next time

As lgans alluded to, looks like we have a new champ for longest main "movie" content crammed onto a BD, and largest "movie size".

From what I see:

Length
1. Man Men: S1 D1 @ 3:53:13
2. Weeds: S2 D1 @ 3:44:57

Movie Size
1. Man Men: S1 D1 @ 49,740,926,976 bytes
2. Damages: S1 D2 @ 47,340,896,256 bytes.

Disc Size
1. Dirty Dancing (jaggies) @ 50,037,102,827 bytes
2. Man Men: S1 D1 @ 49,979,468,058

I personally thank member Kannisto for being kind enough to post the BD Info of Night Watch and Day Watch (Japan Import).

I also thank member Phlyod for checking and posting the stats of The Descent. Looks like I have been given a defective copy as all versions in my BD copy are MPEG-2 encoded.

msgohan,

Aforementioned New Line can take "Mad Men: Season 1" as a prime example to encode LOTR. I know that the encode on LOTR would hover in the high teens or low 20s but considering the abundant usage of CGI and the rich production values (similar to King Kong) I think the New Line can still deliver us with excellent ~ reference PQ and SQ on Blu-ray.

I guess the descent was tagged wrong. That or the press went fubar when no one was looking.

The thing with Mad Men is that there's very little camera movement (photography on it is fantastic though). I mean it's mostly just cuts and not a lot. I think most news reports have more camera movement. And all of the audio is dialogue. 2.1 would have been enough(I wouldn't want it though).

So while they have crammed a great deal of material on to a disc, most of is stills and silence(or quiet). The show has a very deliberate pace. Everyone should buy S1 of Mad Men, #2 show on cable after Dexter.

Ridiculous codec tier sig gone. Still AVC/24bit lossless fanboy.

I am still betting on the PS3 not telling the truth - I don't see how 'some discs are accidentally MPEG2' - it just doesn't seem plausible.

I may be able to get my PS3 to 2.4 today and will see what we find...

LJSilver at cinefacts.de posted some of the BDInfo for Warner Germany's Rambo Blu-ray. Confusing that he says it's Region Free though, maybe the non-steelbook really isn't locked? Or he's just going by old info. Also a shame that it looks like he clipped the rest of the info.

I've never been to that forum before, quite interesting how similar it is to AVS.. just in Germany. They talk about the frame-skipping being on the German BD, so it's confirmed to be on every DVD and BD released.

Unless I calculated wrong those bitrates should give a movie size of roughly 16.4GB. Extras are only a 20 minute TV special and trailer in SD, so more space wastage by Warner.

Also as I suspected judging from the German DVD's setup, the two subtitle tracks with tiny bitrates must be for the foreign dialogue scenes only. The other two are German and German HoH which were actually advertised.

I also have some other titles that are in the list but maybe were not 'fully published' or we published with the older squid code...

If there is interest I can post them.

If they aren't in the list or have incomplete information, I say definitely bring 'em on!

Many of the items in the list were measured with other tools like xport or MPEG2Repair. These should be highly accurate and probably don't need to be reposted, although I don't personally see any harm in it if you are so inclined (especially titles with TrueHD or DTS-HD tracks since those audio bitrates make for interesting data points).

Before this tool, MPEG2 and AVC streams could be scanned by MPEG2repair which was accurate, but VC-1 had to be calculated by hand.

I would personally hope that New Line/Warner encodes the extended editions on 2 BD-50s for each movie. I would rather switch discs than the picture quality to be compromised. I do agree that it should compress a little easier than a normal film because of the extensive CGI.

My PS3 that is currently at 2.36 correctly reports The Descent to be AVC.

Once I work out how to update to 2.4 I will test it again.

They have taken 2.4 down so I will need to DL it from somewhere I guess.

OK, n00b question but bear with me:

Could the differences in size be due to how/where the PiP track is stored in HD vs. BD? I.e. could the PiP data be external to the main "movie size" in HD but counted in BD?

Or is something else going on?

Others have stated that there are numerous audio tracks not present on the HD DVD. What you suggest is also possible. I know that the PiP is muxed into the movie file(s) for other BDs but I can't say for this one or how HD DVDs do it.

Transport streams inherently have more overhead than the program streams - however with that much additional I would say there has to be either higher bitrate streams involved or additional streams of some kind.

Whoops! Thanks for posting it, but you should hit the checkbox next to the episode playlists and hit "Scan Bitrates" then let it fnish so that the VBR streams aren't listed as "0kbps".

So far what's been done for TV boxsets is to manually add up all the episode sizes and running times for one "movie size" and "length" per disc. Then add up each of the VBR bitrates and divide by # of eps on the disc for the average.

That's what I do, although it's admittedly a little bit of a pain - a definite target for an interface enhancement.

In the current version of BDInfo, you can generate different reports by selecting/unselecting playlists and only the selected playlists are put in the text report. This is independent of the bitrate scan results so right now, for example, you can bitrate scan the entire disc (i.e. nothing checked) which will be kept in memory and then generate as many partial reports as you want by just checking different playlists and clicking View Report. One simple approach would be to put a "summary section" at the end of the report which sums/averages the selected playlists. Not a particularly intuitive user interface solution to the problem and would create weird results for a full report, but it would be easy to put in at least.

I do have one small change to roll out which deals with the situation where disc copy-protection is not deactivated. Currently, the initial scan of a copy-protected disc will pretty much run as a full disc scan (i.e. a long time) since the initial scan does not quit until all detailed stream information has been collected or the entire disc has been read. However, with a copy-protected disc this will never happen, so it's either going to read the entire disc on the initial "Browse" scan or blow-up somewhere during the process because of weirdly scrambled data.

I'm thinking that I will put in this initial disc scan fix, the "summary section" addition, and Patsfan123's report autosave suggestion for a new version. I will be putting off the peak bitrate and chapter bitrate tracking for a little longer, but if there are any other BDInfo suggestions I am always open to them. Another idea that I am considering is to count different video frame types (I, P, B, etc.) to present as part of the report. Not sure how useful that actually is, but I thought it might be interesting.

The Lake House - Dolby Digital AC3 (lossy compression)

I mentally prepared some snide comments regarding the specs for this disc, but what's the point of speaking them out loud? I certainly wouldn't want to be stereotyped as one of those crass "bitrate watchers"... people might think I own an LCD and PS3 as well and even (gasp) play video games!
